The podcast episode discusses three controversial topics: kneeling during the national anthem, forcing young children to take ADHD medication, and teaching gender ideology in elementary school. The hosts argue against kneeling during the anthem, citing disrespect to the military and division in the country. They also discuss the side effects of ADHD medication and suggest alternative approaches to managing disruptive behaviors. Lastly, they debate whether it is appropriate to educate preschoolers and elementary students on gender ideology, considering their cognitive and emotional development. The hosts present different viewpoints on these issues but encourage critical thinking and inclusivity in education. Good morning, and welcome to Controversial Clickbait, where we discuss the truth behind controversy. On today's episode, we will be exploring the topics of kneeling in front of our national flag, forcing young children to take ADHD medication, and the intimacies of teaching gender ideology in elementary school. My name is Chloe. Hi, I'm Maya, and today we will begin with my topic on why you should not kneel before the flag of the United States of America. Since July of 1777, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, the United States of America has been a united free country. What does this mean? As stated in the English Dictionary, a free country is a country where the government does not control what people say or do for political reasons, and where people can express their opinions without punishment. With this being said, the government cannot physically make us do or not do something, but just because we will not get in trouble for it does not mean it should not be done. Kneeling instead of standing for the flag is a national issue because it is disrespectful to our United States flag and our past current members of the National Guard and military, and it indicates a sense of division in our country as a whole. The first reason I will be discussing is how kneeling is disrespectful to the military and National Guard. It is like a slap in the face when they witness someone kneeling to the very thing they fought for us to have. John Kelly, a former U.S. Marine Corps member, states, I believe every American when the National Anthem is played should cover their hearts and think about all the men and women who have been maimed and killed. Every American should stand and think for three lousy minutes, John Kelly declared in response to the NFL controversy. The second reason I will be discussing is how kneeling shows an indication of division in our country. A time when our country did not feel united was in 2016 when an NFL quarterback named Colin Kaepernick decided to take a knee for the flag during the National Anthem. He quotes, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. Kaepernick told the NFL media in an exclusive interview, this sets an example for high school and middle school athletes that it is acceptable to kneel if your favorite football player that you admire does it. I do believe that there is an appropriate time and place to share your opinions regarding different situations. With a sense of turning your back whenever something controversial or something that upsets people happens is not a valid excuse to not stand for your country. However, the counterclaim to this argument would be that kneeling for the flag is an appropriate way of protesting an issue or a way of punishing our country based on current or past situations. Since we live in a free country, there are laws such as the First Amendment, which states that we have freedom of our speech and what we choose to do in certain situations. For example, in 2020, a man named George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minnesota. Due to this event, many NFL and NBA players took a knee when the flag was presented before their game to prove that whenever something bad happens it is okay to punish America for it by not standing for the flag and for their country. In conclusion, no one can make you do something that you do not choose to do and that is the beauty of living in a free country. Therefore, the next time you are presented in front of our United States flag, do your part in being an American and stand up for your freedom. For my signal of today's episode, I will be discussing whether or not young children should be forced to take ADHD medication. Many parents are forcing their young children to take ADHD medications to control impulsive and disruptive behaviors. Floyd Borreggi wrote an article discussing the many side effects of ADHD medications titled Side Effects of ADHD Medications. When many people think of the side effects of ADHD medication, they mainly think that it just allows the child to concentrate. While that may be true for some, many young children are less feeling like zombies during the school day and being crazy and aggravated when they get back home from school. The dire effects listed in the article include headaches, nausea, tics, rebounds, moodiness, irritability, sleeping issues, and delayed growth. There are many ways for parents and teachers to work on disruptive behaviors before using medications. Parents and teachers should have patience and give their children grace when it comes to unwanted behaviors. Their brain chemistry simply isn't working very well together. An article titled Teaching Students with ADHD by Melinda Smith and John Segal provided insight on how to improve disruptive behaviors in the classroom. The teacher can move the child away from other children if they are explicitly talking. If that does not work, perhaps try thinking about the child and how they are unable to control these impulses. Lessons can be improved to be more interactive and fun for the child so that they can become more interested and actually enjoy a school day and concentrate. Folder blockers can be used during tests to prevent the child with ADHD from getting distracted and keep them from distracting others. While teachers can help children control their behaviors during school, it is also up to parents to control these behaviors before and after the children go to school. Parents should make sure their children are getting enough sleep, exercise, and that they are on a schedule. A change in schedule can easily throw off any young child, especially those battling ADHD. The dosage and formula of your child's medication is also very important. While there are many terrible side effects young children can have while taking medication, the side effects are not always present. For some young children, taking ADHD medication can be very beneficial. If the medication is not dose right or if they are on the wrong formula, side effects can occur. ADHD medication has been proved to be very helpful for children. The Cleveland Clinic showed scientific evidence that only 10 to 35% of young children do not react to the medicine. Therefore, if your child is able to tell you the medication does not make them feel good, you can try asking their pediatrician about changing from a short or long-lasting formula and maybe different medications. ADHD can be controlled and have little side effects for some children, but it is also best to wait for your child to understand and speak about their feelings. Young children will be forced to take ADHD medication and not be able to understand why this is happening and why they have to take medication. Do you think that it is morally right for young children to be on ADHD medications before exploring other therapies? Hey y'all, I'm Jill. On today's segment, I'll be discussing educating the youth. In the realm of education, the discussion surrounding gender identity education has become very heated. At the heart of the matter lies an imperative question, should preschoolers and elementary students be educated on gender ideology? Elementary age children do not have a firm perception of reality, making it counterproductive to introduce abstract ideas concerning gender. The World Health Organization defines gender as socially constructed characteristics of women and men, then defines gender identity as something innate and deeply felt internal. Children have little to no control over their emotions and the inability to process abstract thinking. The World Health Organization highlights the complexity of gender and its abstract nature. Children of this state tend to live in their own egocentric world, proclaiming to be Superman with a lack of awareness and understanding different points of view. Children cannot comprehend such complex matters. Exposing complex concepts of gender identity to preschool age children whose cognitive and emotional development is still in its formative stages may overwhelm preschoolers' comprehension abilities, creating a source of potential distress. Competence is important for emotional self-regulation. Sex refers to a person's biological factors, such as a person's genitals, hormones, and chromosomes, whereas gender refers to a person's identity or personal sin. According to Healthline, an American health and wellness website, there are 68 terms used to describe gender identity, with some of them overlapping one another. The term non-binary is an umbrella term used to describe people who do not identify exclusively as male or female. Statements preschoolers make describing themselves are not accurate, which is why it is contentious to introduce concepts in this stage, when children are still maturing their individual self-concepts. Some may argue that educating children on gender ideology in elementary and preschool can foster greater acceptance, understanding, and empathy towards individuals who do not conform to traditional gender norms. Ignoring discussions on gender in educational settings can inadvertently perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination. However, by providing sensible, age-appropriate education on gender identity and expression, schools have a vital role in promoting equality. Studies on gender in education do not help to detract from academic learning, they enhance it by promoting critical thinking when it is developmentally appropriate. A balanced, gender-neutral approach that considers individual differences and respects the developmental stages of children is imperative for fostering an inclusive learning environment.
