Talk: 19890329-Larry_Rosenberg-UNK-coming_to_terms_with_the_nature_of_the_body-1564 Leandra Tejedor Start_time: 00:58:37 Display_question: If we are not the body or the mind, what are we? Keyword_search: mind, body, identification, letting go, enlightenment, Dogen, concept, process, meditation, Buddha, healer, relationships, illusions, suffering Question_content: Questioner: I’m not sure if this is a reflection or question. Okay, if we are not a mind or a body, and it’s a balance of the middle way And we shouldn’t identify too much with the mind or the body. What are we? Larry: It's not too much. Actually, the process of enlightenment is, totally letting go of the identification with mind and body. That's what Dogen meant when he said, mind and body dropped off, dropped away. You're looking for words. See, in other words, you want another concept for what it is. How about if we just forgot about the concept? It's just what is it's? What's happening? See, there is a mind. We're not trying to kill the mind. We're not trying to kill the body. That is, it's a process. Okay, I'll call it we're a process. Does that make you feel better? Questioner: No, I got that. Larry: Yeah. And there are ways. After all, a lot of what we're doing is not only is it helpful to care for the body, in all the ways that probably we all know, but one of the much more radical I mean, there's no comparison. We're much better at caring for the body is, we don't know how to care for our mind. And what meditation is about. The Buddha is the great healer, the great physician of the mind. And so, it's not to kill the mind, but rather to...in ways that are hinted at here tonight, is to begin to see relationships, that actually are illusions, very tenacious illusions, which result in suffering. So, there is a body. There is a mind. It's the functioning. Does that make sense? Questioner: Yes Larry: Good. End_time: 01:00:33
