Alexander the Great

Jean RacineJean Racine

"Alexander the Great" is a play written by Jean Racine that caused quite a stir in the French theatre community. It's based on the stories of Quintus Curtius, Plutarch, and Justin, and follows the life of Alexander the Great. Racine was reportedly unhappy with the way the play was being acted out, leading to it being performed simultaneously at a rival theatre just two weeks after its first performance at the Palais Royal by Moliere's company. Despite the controversy, the play remains an important work in French literature and theatre history.
