Jonah, a Hebrew prophet, is told by God to go to the city of Nineveh and warn its inhabitants about their imminent destruction due to their wickedness. Reluctant, Jonah flees in the opposite direction and boards a ship. A storm arises, and the sailors throw Jonah into the sea to calm the ocean's fury. He is swallowed by a great fish and spends three days in its belly, praying to God, and finally, the fish vomits him onto the beach. God then goes to Nineveh and preaches, leading to their mass conversion. However, Jonah is unhappy with God's forgiveness of the Ninevites and wishes for their destruction. God teaches him about mercy through a plant that quickly grows and dies. Jonah learns the lesson and realizes divine compassion.
