The Phillies have kept the same name since 1883, making them the longest-standing team name in professional sports. Despite this continuity, their history is marked by chaos, bad luck, and absurdities. Their journey began at an old horse market before achieving milestones like a World Series win and having players like Mike Schmidt. The Phillies have carried the same name longer than any other team in professional sports. No relocations, no rebrands that stuck, just Phillies since 1883. That kind of continuity sounds like stability. It wasn't. Underneath that unchanging name is one of the most chaotic, unlucky, and occasionally absurd histories in baseball. Before we get to Mike Schmidt, before we get to a World Series parade down Broad Street, we have to start with an old, run-down field that used to be a horse market.
