In the 1910s, the Phillies had a chance to win their first pennant in 33 years led by Grover Cleveland Alexander and Gavvy Cravath. President Woodrow Wilson attended the World Series, but the Phillies lost to the Red Sox. This success didn't lead to further victories, and the franchise struggled for over three decades. By the 1910s, the Phillies finally had a real shot. In 1915, led by a pitcher named Grover Cleveland Alexander, who won 31 games that year, and outfielder Gavvy Cravath, who led the league in home runs, the Phillies won their first pennant in 33 years. Sitting President Woodrow Wilson showed up to watch Game 2 of the World Series, the first sitting president to ever attend one. The Phillies still lost the series, four games to one, to the Boston Red Sox. That pennant should have been the start of something. Instead, it was close to the last good thing that happened to the franchise for over three decades.
