Welcome to Footy Talk with Jack Riley and Albert, where we talk about the top AFL draft picks of 2023. We would like to begin today by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we are recording this podcast today. The Yorta Yorta and Hangarong Nations. I'd like to pay my respects to their elders, past, present and emerging. On the show today, we will be talking about the top 2023 AFL draft picks, and we will decide if they deserve to be there or not, and how they've been playing so far this year in their new AFL teams. We'll start with the number one pick, Coley Reid. He is junior league. He played for Bendigo Pioneers in big country. He's 187 centimetres tall, played 11 games for the AFL, and he's 19 years old, and he plays midfield. Colby McCurtcher. He played for Tasmanian Devils in his career. He played for Allianz. He's 182 centimetres tall. He played nine games for AFL, and he's 19 years old, and he's a key defender. Jed Walter, Gold Coast Academy, is who he played for in his junior league. 194 centimetres tall. He is a 19-year-old forward who has played nine games for the AFL so far. Zane Dersmott. He played for Fitzwilliams Herald and big country in his junior league. He's 189 centimetres tall. He's 19 years old. He plays midfield and forward, and he's played 10 games for the AFL. Nick Watson. He played for Eastern Rangers. He played for Vic Metro. He's 170 centimetres tall. He's 19 years old. He's a forward, and he's played six games for AFL. Harley Reid's stats. So far this year, as a rookie, he's had 17.9 disposals on average, 7.4 kicks, 10.4 handballs, which is above average. His marks are 2.1, which is below average. His tackles are at 3.3, which is an average. His clearances are at 4.8, which are above average. His fancy points are at 64.9, which is below average. Colby McCurchess's stats. His disposals, 20.7 on average. Colby McCurchess's stats. He's had 20.7 disposals, which is average. His kicks are 13.3, which is average. His handballs are 7.3, which is above average. His marks are 4.1, which is below average. His tackles, 1.7, which is below average. His metres gained, 369.5, which is average. And his fancy points, 73.2, which is average. Jed Walser, his stats so far for his AFL career is 6.9 disposals, which is below average. 4.9% for his kicks, which is also below average. 1.3 for his goals, which is below average again. 45% shot goal accuracy, below average again. 1.9 for his marks, below average. His tackles are 2.3, which is above average. And his fancy points are 38.3, which is below average again. Dan Dersmoth, his stats so far as a rookie. He plays for North Melbourne. His disposals so far this year are 9.2, which is below average. His kicks are 5.4, which is below average. His handballs are 3.8, which is below average for a rookie. His marks are 3.7, which is above average. His tackles are 0.9, which is below average. His goals are 0.7, which is below average. And his fancy points is 43.4, which is also below average. Nick Watson. His disposals are 9.7, which is below average. His kicks are 5.7, which is below average. His handballs are 4, which is above average. His marks are 3, which is above average. His tackles are 1.8, which is below average. His goals are 0.7, which is below average. And his fancy points are 46.8, which is below average. Now we'll be discussing who deserves to be there and who doesn't. And if they have been playing well. I think that Colby McIrchoff should be number one pick instead of Harley Reid. Do you agree? No. You don't agree? Some of these stats, let's go through their stats again and just compare them. So like Harley Reid, he's got 17.9 for his disposals. Colby again, he's got 20.7. A lot of it just isn't matching up. Colby's just better player than he is. Colby's got mostly better things except for his handballs. His tackles aren't as great. Yeah, he's not getting as much tackles. But other than that, I think he's... Fancy points are better as well than Harley Reid's. Yeah, they're both really good players though. They're in the right spot up at top two, yeah. I think Harley Reid... I don't think Harley Reid will be able to win Rising Star because he's got a bad sling tackle on Natasha Wilson. So I think Colby McIrchoff will win. Yeah, Colby's been playing really good for North Melbourne. Colby's pretty much beaten everything by quite a lot. And if we go down here to Jed Walter, he's not quite a good player. Like everything he does is below average except for his tackles. So above average, he still isn't very high. They're only 2.3. I reckon he should be put at 5. Well, pretty much all of his stats are below average except for his tackles, which is 2.3, which I think is only just above average. I'm pretty sure average is 2. Yeah, average is 2, so he's only just up there by 3 points. I reckon he should be picked 5. I reckon he should be picked 3. Not really, he's got most of his stats are below average. Yeah, but if you look at his disposals and kicks and all that, they're better than the other two. Jed Walter's average should be 4. I reckon Nick Watson should be 4, maybe. He's got averages, though. I reckon he should be picked 4 and Jed should be picked 4. I reckon he should be picked 5 and Nick Watson should be picked 4. Yeah, I reckon that. Let's go over who they actually play for, because we haven't said who they all play for. Harley Raine is for West Coast Eagles. Colby McCurtry plays for North Melbourne. Jed Walter, he plays for the Suns. Zane Dursman is also at North Melbourne. And Nick Watson plays for Hawthorne. Yeah, so I think that's pretty much it for this episode.
