In the Adnan case, he was sentenced to life in jail, but it was reopened in 2016. A key alibi witness, Aja, who was with Adnan at the library during the killing, was not called to testify by Adnan's attorney. The podcast questioned the reliability of phone data and revealed that DNA at the crime scene was never tested. The case gained public attention and in June 2016, Adnan's conviction was overturned and he was granted a new trial. The Adnan case was quickly settled. In less than a year, Adnan was sentenced to a lifetime in jail. But this wasn't the end of the story. As in 2016, this case was reopened. More than 15 years after Lee's killing, the serial podcast re-examined the case and revealed a key alibi witness who did not testify on Syed's behalf. Aja McLean, who now goes by as Aja Chapman, claimed that she was with Syed at the library at the time Lee was killed. While McLean offered to testify, Syed's attorney, Maria Cristina Gutierrez, who has since passed away, did not call her. Wow, your own attorney? She was hired for a reason, you know. I know, it's crazy how more than 15 years later this was revealed that she was basically not doing her job properly. Yeah, and Aja even offered to go and she wasn't ever called. She must have been so confused. That's crazy. You know something else? The podcast also questioned the credibility of the phone data that was used against Syed. You know, in 1999, phone service was not reliable at all. And they revealed that DNA found at the crime scene was never tested. Wow, that's crazy. I can't believe that with such little evidence they decided to convict him. After doing this podcast, a lot of the public started to catch on about the situation and it started to gain a lot of attention. And finally, a year after, in June of 2016, Judge Martin P. Welch overturned Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial.
