In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, syphilis was poorly understood and created a psychosis in French society of a slow degeneration of the human species caused by infertility and intrauterine failure. À la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, la syphilis était mal comprise et a créé une psychose dans la société française d'une lente dégénérescence de l'espèce humaine causée par l'infertilité et le défait intra-utérin.
