Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake), a Hunkpapa Lakota chief and medicine man, embodied Sioux resistance to U.S. expansionist policies, notably following the victory at Little Bighorn. He was killed on December 15, 1890, by Indian police at Standing Rock during an attempted arrest linked to tensions surrounding the Ghost Dance.
