Sitting Bull (Taȟaŋka Íyotake) was a Sioux Lakota chief and medicine man born around 1831, famed for resisting settlers and the U.S. Army. He led bands in key battles, notably the victory over Custer at Little Bighorn in 1876. Afterward he went to Canada, later returned to a reservation, defended Lakota rights and culture, and was killed in 1890 during an arrest by Bureau of Indian Affairs agents. He remains a symbol of Indigenous resistance.
