Hi, my name is Grace, and today on this podcast I'm here with the students from the Spurs Ministry School and Naomi from St. Mary's Catholic High School. Hi, my name is Ali. Hi, my name is Amelie. Hi, my name is Naomi. And today we're going to talk about gender equality and what gender equality actually means and a few examples of consequences of gender equality. We're also going to be talking about the differences between the UK and Belgium in terms of gender and what it means. So first we're going to talk about gender equality differences between Belgium and the UK. In Belgium there are separate teams for every sport, whereas in the UK you only have a team for the boys, and if you're a girl and you want to join a team, it's mixed up and then comes separated. Another example is that St. Mary's girls weren't allowed to wear trousers in the school until 2012, but in Belgium everyone was allowed to choose what they wear, so in Belgium the people have more freedom in what they wear than a few years ago in the UK. So, onto the next topic. What does gender equality actually mean? It means that everyone, regardless of their gender, should be treated fairly. In many places this isn't always the case, but it's important because when everyone is treated equally it makes society better for everyone. Here are a few examples of when gender equality is not important to some people. One way to think about gender equality is in the workplace. Imagine if a man and a woman are doing the same job, they should be paid the same amount of money, right? Unfortunately this doesn't always happen. Sometimes women are paid less than men for doing the same job. That's not fair, I think. Another thing to consider is that both men and women should have the same opportunities to do whatever they want in life. Whether it's going to school, getting a job they love, or becoming a leader, everyone should have the chance to follow their dreams, no matter their gender. But sometimes there are stereotypes or beliefs about what men and women can or can't do. For example, some people might think that only men can be strong leaders, while women should stay at home and take care of their family. But that's not true at all. Men can be great caregivers and women can be amazing leaders. You may ask yourself, why is gender equality so important? Well, it's just important to remember that gender equality is not about women's rights. It's about everyone having the same opportunities and being treated with respect, regardless of their gender. And how can everyone make sure that they help a little bit to improve gender equality worldwide? We can start by speaking up when we see unfair treatment based on gender. We can also support those in politics that promote equality in the workplace and in society. And most importantly, we can treat everyone with kindness and respect, no matter who they are. By working together, we can create a world where everyone has the same rights and opportunities, regardless of their gender. Let's make gender equality a reality for everyone.
