"Die Ahnen, Bd. I.1 Ingo" is a novel by Gustav Freytag that tells the story of Ingo, a prince of the Vandals who is forced to flee from his homeland on the Rhine in the year 357. He seeks refuge with a friend of his father, Gaufürst Answald, in Thuringia, but Answald's followers do not welcome the foreigner. The situation worsens when Ingo's own followers arrive and tensions rise. Ingo falls in love with Answald's daughter, but even this cannot stop Answald from abandoning his protection of Ingo. Eventually, the Romans discover Ingo's whereabouts and demand his surrender."
