I started smoking cocaine when I was about 30, so I smoked it for a long time before quitting my addiction. What led you to start smoking cocaine? I first started to smoke cocaine because my husband had lost his long battle with cancer and it really took a toll on me. We were high school sweethearts and were happily married for 11 years. He was the light of my life and my rock. He always smiled and knew how to make me laugh. Everyone always talked about how he lit up a room. We had three kids by the time we were 26. He was such an amazing father and husband. I enjoyed every second I was with him. When he was 29, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The doctor told us he only had eight months to live. We did our best to keep the kids happy and make most of the little time he had left, but the truth is that I was in denial for a long time about his diagnosis and couldn't accept it. Every time he would try to talk about it, I would immediately shut it down because I didn't want to think about it. When he passed, it was really hard. I had to now take care of three kids on my own and support us financially. I was dealing with no longer having my loving husband by my side and that made me fall into depression and that's how my addiction first started. So what was your first experience with cocaine? I started going out to parties a lot after my husband's death and while I was at a friend's party one day when they offered me cocaine, one of these people, all these people around me were already high and drunk. I was nervous but everyone just kept saying, just try it, just try it. From that day forward, I was hooked. How did your addiction start to affect different aspects of your life? I started to become a very absent mother to my children. I had lost my job because I kept coming in late and messing up. I couldn't get through a shift without getting high at first. Our family started to struggle financially and we almost lost the house and I couldn't provide for my kids. I no longer had a job so I started to beg family and friends for money and steal from them. I began to lose my relationship with people. I depended on cocaine so much that I even started smoking it around my children. I was hurting my children mentally and physically because I was no longer there for them, especially when they needed me and me smoking around them affected their health as well.
