The Daily Devotion for December 25th, 2023 focuses on the theme of peace. The Bible passages from Isaiah and Matthew highlight the prophecy of a peaceful kingdom and the blessing on peacemakers. Jesus sought to bring peace to the world, and as his followers, we are called to be peacemakers. This requires actively promoting peace and seeking unity, even with those who disagree with us. It is challenging work, but we are assured that the Prince of Peace will guide us. The devotion suggests a song as a prayer for peace and encourages us to let peace begin with ourselves. Welcome to Christchurch's Daily Devotion for December 25th, 2023. I want to take this time to wish you Merry Christmas. Today we will be reading from Isaiah chapter 9 verses 6 through 7 and Matthew chapter 5 verses 9. For to us a child is born, to us a child is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end, and he will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness. From that time on and forever, the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called Children of God. This coming Sunday in worship we are going to be thinking about gifts that Jesus might like to receive from us. These two Bible passages for today tell of one possibility. On this Christmas day we are reminded of the prophecy of Isaiah that told that the Messiah's kingdom would be one of peace. And Jesus blessed those who are the peacemakers. Jesus sought to bring peace to a broken and troubled world. Some chose to accept this offer, others did not, which only continued the brokenness and trouble. As his followers, we are also invited and challenged to be a people of peace, to be peacemakers. And to be a peacemaker means we are to be intentionally working to promote peace. It is not enough just to avoid conflict. We are to be actively seeking peace with and among those with whom we disagree, and among those who promote violence and divisiveness. To be sure, this is not easy. It is hard work. But we are to be assured that if you will commit to this work, the Prince of Peace will go with you and guide you in your efforts. And be assured, he will receive your efforts as a great gift. Today's personal worship option. Sy Miller and Jill Jackson wrote the words to a great song that could be sung as a prayer. May this part of the song be your prayer this Christmas Day. Let peace begin with me. Let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. In the name of the Prince of Peace. Amen.
