Gen Xers in 1996 believed that older generations saw them as lazy, confused, and unfocused, but they saw themselves as ambitious, determined, and independent. This difference in perception may be due to the older generations not understanding the technology and cultural changes that Gen X experienced. Gen X took a different approach to success, utilizing advancements in technology and embracing a changing world. They had easier ways to achieve success through technology like computers and cell phones. However, this easier approach does not necessarily mean it was better. Technology advancements have also led to a decrease in face-to-face interactions and may have negative consequences. Younger generations, like the speaker's generation, may be viewed similarly by older generations due to their different approach to success and heavy reliance on technology. The speaker is both fascinated and puzzled by the younger generation's use of technology. They acknowledge the potential harm techn In 1996, Gen Xers were asked how older generations saw them versus how they saw themselves. They believed that they were seen as lazy, confused, and unfocused, but believed themselves to be ambitious, determined, and independent. So why do you think Gen X, your generation, believed others thought so lowly of them when they saw themselves as the total opposite? Do you think it has more to do with the attitudes of the older generations, or that Gen X just took a different approach to success that wasn't seen as easily? I think Gen X took a different approach that wasn't seen as easily. The older generations didn't have the technology. You started to have computers. You started to have the beginning of cell phones. You had technology that wasn't there before that the older generations weren't even aware of. Music was changing. The style of clothing was changing. There was a lot of technology advancements. I think the older generation was very set in their ways looking back at parents and how things moved forward, but I would definitely say there were two very different outlooks there. Sorry, I'm just trying to think if there's anything else. Okay, so kind of like going based off the fact that Gen X did take a different approach and that there were different ways for them to succeed that there weren't in the past, like technology. Do you think that Gen X had a better way of achieving their success? I don't necessarily know if it was a better way. I think it was an easier way. I think technology advancements and the changing world, I don't necessarily think they had a bad approach in the past generations, but it was definitely easier where we had e-mails and fax machines. It was just a changing world, so just different. And then just kind of another thing on that, like technology continues to advance as well as society, so I mean my generation may have a different way of approaching success than like your generation did. So do you think that your generation looks at my generation the way that you guys thought older generations were looking at you, like looking at you as lazy or confused when we're just taking a different approach maybe? I would agree with that. Part of me is fascinated by your generation and some of the approaches that you guys can take to make things easier, to have so much face-to-face contact through social media, through advancements in technology, and part of me doesn't understand it. So I can see looking back at older generations just as we're looking at your generation going, wow. Sometimes I can see where you guys would be very lazy, but you're doing just as many successful things just easier or a different approach to it. Not easier, because nothing's ever easier, but a whole different approach to it. So one generation would have to go into the office. Now there's technology like Zoom or FaceTime where you can sit in your pajamas and never leave your house and still make an income, which my generation is also able to do now as well. And also looking at the technology side of things, do you think that it'll come to a point where we take it too far? Do you think technology will end up being a bad thing? I think technology already is a bad thing, but I do see where it could become a horrible thing. So people are starting to lose touch with each other. I think there's a lot less face-to-face. I mean, you can go into a restaurant and watch two people at the same table text message each other or however they're communicating through their phones, but they're not even looking at each other and socially interacting in person. So I can see where it could become harmful, and technology in itself is harmful. Yeah, I agree with that, and they talk about that in the book too, where they talk about how, especially my generation, where we grew up with technology. Generations before didn't have it from the time that they were born, but my generation is very dependent on technology and always has been. You can go into a grocery store and watch a kid on an iPad playing on the Internet in a shopping cart. It's the craziest thing. No, and the issue that it's already leading to is the fact that my generation, a lot of us feel lonely and we feel that social interactions are hard when they really shouldn't be. It's just the fact that we do it all through technology. Right. There's something to be said about shaking someone's hand or giving somebody a hug, and you're not getting that through a computer or gaming. Yeah. Well, I think that kind of wraps all the questions up. Okay.
