I'm glad I know who Jesus is. I'm glad I know who Jesus is. He's more than just a story. He is the King of Glory. I'm glad I know who Jesus is. of the women and past the court of Israel, past the altar, past the stairs, praise God, in through the holy place. And I made it all the way in to the most holy place because I know who Jesus is. Praise God. The Bible says it's by a new and living way which He hath consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, His flesh. Glory to God. I'm glad I know who Jesus is. Praise the Lord. I'm so glad for the service this morning. I'm glad we still have lights, electricity right now. I want to try to preach today and I want to have the attention of the people. And I know these things can be distracting and I certainly don't blame anybody for that. But I want to try to deliver what the Lord has laid on my heart out of Acts chapter 12. Acts chapter 12 today and appreciate the Sunday school, the message that was there. Brother Quentin, when I tell you you are really missed when you're not here, I really mean that. I'm not trying to encourage you so that I hope you show up next time. When you're out of town, and I mean it really matters, and I look through the congregation and when there's people that are missing, so glad when I see you here. You are missed. Sister Glenda, when there went months and you weren't able to get into the house of God, when I see the passenger seat occupied when you pull up, Brother Ron, it thrills us. I'm so glad for what God has given us. He's made us a congregation. And Sister Hannah, when you're not here, you're missed. You are missed. I'm just telling you that. I don't want you to think that I wasn't there in the beginning. Think nothing of that. We love that you are here and a part of us, and it's going to take all of us getting together. If it didn't take all of us, God wouldn't have put us together, I believe. Let's read this morning, Acts chapter 12. I want to begin reading in verse 1. Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church, and he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. Then were the days of unleavened bread. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him, intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Peter therefore was kept in prison, but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers bound with two chains, and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison, and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out and followed him, and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate which leadeth unto the city, which opened to them of his own accord. And they went out and passed on through one street, and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Will you pray with me? Thank you so much, Lord, allowing us to feel your Spirit in this service. Thank you for accepting our worship today. Lord, it's sincere. We love you, God. And I thank you so much for what you have done for us. Thank you for what we have heard thus far. I am asking that you will move on this vessel. Lord, I pray that you have prepared for this message. I ask you to move on me and give me the words to say exactly how they ought to be said. And I ask for you to do the moving on the heart. In the name of Jesus, Amen. Glory to God. I want to preach this for a title, You Don't Belong in This Prison. Something that could have been told to Peter right there that day by the angel, You Don't Belong in This Prison. And as I was preparing to preach this, I had struggled with a title. I had a different title. You Can't Stay Here. But I also know that sometimes there's people that will take little things and think, Oh, maybe that's my ticket out of here. Somebody might read a sign that's posted that says, Frank's Breakfast Inn, and think they ought to join the FBI. Take it for a sign. So, I didn't want anybody to get the impression that it was time for them to leave the church with a title like, You Can't Stay Here. So, I'm going to try to preach, You Don't Belong in This Prison. You do not belong in this prison. Verse 5 there in our reading says that Peter was kept in the prison. But the Bible says that the church was praying for Peter while he was kept in the prison. Undoubtedly, this prison was not a pleasant place to be. It wasn't an easy place to be, especially when somebody's facing what Peter was facing. I mean, he believed for all intents and purposes this was it for him. He was going to die. That's why he was cast into prison. The only way he was coming out was his body would be carried out. It was all set. I mean, they had called for him, had captured him, apprehended him, and the execution had been scheduled. But the church was praying for him. Prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. Now, I want to get straight to where I'm wanting to go today, because I believe that there's somebody, I want to talk to somebody today that I believe is in a similar situation that Peter was in right then. And I want to try to explain it the best way that I can. But somebody is in a prison-like situation and you don't belong there. This is not where you are intended to be. You don't belong in this prison. And you may not be like Peter. There may not be an all-night prayer meeting of the saints gathered together praying for you particularly. There may not be that praying without ceasing that's going on just for your name. And not everybody really knows where you are right now, nor what it is in particular that you're facing. Brother Anthony read to us this morning out of Romans 15 and verse 30. And he says, Strive together with me in your prayers to God for me. And he's talking about the Apostle Paul asking, I need you to pray for me. I need this church to be praying for me. I wonder if he thought back to this incident where Peter was in prison, because Paul had his share of imprisonments and his persecutions. I wonder if he was thinking, the church prayed for Peter and got him out of that mess, and I'm asking you to pray, because we certainly do need each other. Not everybody knows where you are. Not everybody knows what you're facing. Not everybody knows what your prison is like today. But I want to assure you, I'll stand right up here behind this pulpit and I will assure you people are praying for you. You may not have a good understanding of what's going on in your situation right now, but I want every one of us to know you can look around this place and I guarantee you that people are praying for you. There are prayers that are being lifted up to heaven and your name is attached to those prayers. God in heaven hears your name being called out. And while the church may not know what's going on, God knows exactly where you are and what you're going through right now. Now as Peter was cast into this prison, I want to let you know, nobody would have told Peter or nobody would have kind of talked around about things and said, you know, if Peter would have been more careful, he wouldn't have ended up in that prison. Peter, if you'd have run faster, you'd have never ended up where you are tonight. Nobody would have told Peter. If you'd have fought harder, Peter, you wouldn't be in the prison that you're in right now. Nobody would have looked at Peter and said, Peter, you're to blame for this. This is your fault you're in this prison. Because the fact is, Peter was in prison because the enemies of Christ wanted him dead. That's exactly why he was in prison today. And any and every Christian who is working in the vineyard of the Lord, if you have committed yourself to labor in His field, you can be assured that your life is at risk too for a prison-like experience like Peter had gone through. You can know today, hell wants to stop you. Hell wants to stop the work that you're involved in. Hell wants to stop the work that you're thinking about getting in. And so therefore, there is a prison that has been prepared for you to put you away and to stop you from doing what God would have you to do. Now the devil cannot, at his will, take your life. Can't do it. The devil can't kill you. If that was the case, there would be no gospel-like holiness church because we'd all be dead for the threat that we are to the kingdom of hell. The devil can't take your life at his will. But here's what he does. He threatens and he intimidates and he boxes people in and like a roaring lion, he walketh about seeking whom he may devour. But I know we've got people in our church right now. You have made up your mind, I'm going to pray. Well, hell heard you say that. We've got people right here that have said, I will draw nigh to God. You've made up your mind and you are determined to do that very thing. You've already repented of the laziness. You've put the apathy behind you, the slothfulness. You've repented and confessed that to God. You have resolved, I am not staying in a comfort zone. You have made up your mind, I'm going to sanctify all my stuff. You have decided I'm going forward in this. And because of that, you've got an enemy of your soul that has his sights set on you. You have got a spiritual bullseye on your back. And a prison cell has been picked out specifically for you. But you don't belong in this prison. You don't belong in this prison. In the text where we read in verse 1 and 2, Herod's stretching forth his hands to vex the church. Verse 2, he killed James, the brother of John, with a sword. Now, this is just a brief account of the martyrdom of James, the brother of John. That's about all we have and it's easy to ride over it. And it may not have a whole lot of detail here, but I can only imagine that it devastated the church at that point in time. Much like we have Davy and Natalie Lloyd, whose lives have been taken by savages in Haiti, and now the church is reeling and tears have been shed and there's confusion and not really knowing. I have to accept that the church was like that at that time. What's happening here? I thought we were going forward. I thought things were going to get better. And here we are. It seems like things are getting worse. Here was James, the brother of John, the first true, loyal apostle to Jesus Christ to be martyred, to die. John, his brother, would be the one who lives the longest of all the apostles. You know why? James' work was done. It was it. He had run his race. He had finished the course. It might seem short to us, but James was done. John would have years of work to do. He had a church to pastor. He had Jesus' mother to take care of. He had a revelation to receive and record. He had a lot of work left to do. And so did Peter. Peter, there was a lot of work left for him to do. And you know that a man cannot die when God has a work for him to do. When God is willing to keep a soul alive, it doesn't matter how many Haitian gangs come on your compound. You're going to live through it. And you've got a work to do. Your calling, the calling on your life, cannot be extinguished as long as God has a work for you to do. It simply cannot happen. And Peter was about to find that out. Now, we know here with his reputation, Herod really wasn't timid. He wasn't squeamish about taking out church leaders. It doesn't seem to bother him in the least. In fact, it seemed that he received something from it. He got more popular among the Jews. No doubt, it raised his stature in the Roman government as he's trying to keep peace in the area. But Peter was arrested. And his execution had a time set. This man was set to die. Soldiers were surrounding him. Fetters were on his hands. Chained to his side. Deep inside the prison. Past the gates and through the wards. Now, everybody knew that Herod wasn't just making idle threats when he arrested Peter. Herod wasn't just saying things. He was a motivated man at that point. He saw that he killed James, and it made him more popular. He was willing to please people again and take out another member of the church. The Jews in that area, they wanted the church to be stopped. It was an upset to their system of government. And they felt like if we could just stop this preaching, we can shut this whole new religion down. So when these Jews got to thinking, if we kill these guys, I think we can squash this thing. They'll all go away. They'll find something else to do. Maybe we'll get them back in where they came from. And so once Herod killed James, it probably looked like to those Jews, we're doing it. We're shutting this thing down. They had already killed Stephen. Stoned him to death. Now one of the sons of thunder is gone. Now they've got their sights set on old loudmouth Peter out there preaching to people. And if Peter's voice could be silenced, maybe we could shut this whole thing down. But at that point in time, it was imperative that Peter's voice not be silenced. He was spending the night in a prison that he did not belong there. Peter's voice was very important. He was one of those who was personal eyewitness to the miracles and the ministry of Jesus Christ. He was one who had seen with his own eyes the resurrected Jesus Christ. What he had to say was very important. He was a leader in the church in that day. Thousands of people had been saved at Peter's preaching. He was praying for people, and they were getting healed. He was praying for the possessed, and they were delivered from the devils. Through the streets of Jerusalem, people would bring out their sick loved ones, lay them on beds and lay them on couches just hoping that Peter would walk by and His shadow would cast over them. This was an important time for Peter to be there. Peter had a message of a resurrected Savior that needed to be delivered and God was not finished with him yet. Peter would have his time. There would come a time when Peter would be martyred, but it would be after his course was finished. It would be after his race was run. But as long as God had a purpose, there was no prison that was fit for this man. More work was to be done. And if it was going to get accomplished, it wasn't going to happen in the prison. I know that you can witness to the guard on the right and the guard on the left. We don't hear Peter at midnight singing through the prison like Paul and Silas did. All we know is, he's figuring this is it. I'm going to die. God says, you're coming out of this prison because there is more for you to do. Now understand, that for Peter to get out of this prison, the church didn't hire some smooth-talking lawyer to go before the courts and argue his case and gain his release. There were no angry mobs assembled outside of the palace of Herod demanding, you let that man go. He doesn't belong in prison. Nobody decided that we're going to get together at the darkest hour of the night, break into the prison, and we're going to get this man out of there. Nobody set up negotiations and said, we'll give you this if you'll give us him. If Peter was going to come out of that prison, it was going to take a spiritual, supernatural happening. It would be a divine intervention from Heaven if Peter was to get out of that prison. That is what it was going to take. And that is exactly what happened. It was going to take God getting him out. Now, listen here. Nobody went into the prison without encouraging Peter. Now, buddy, if you'll just think positive thoughts, you're going to get yourself out of here. You don't have to be in this prison. You just think positive, and you'll come out of there. Nobody came in saying, just be strong, Peter. This will all be over soon. Be encouraged, Peter. Nobody goes in and tells Peter, it's alright. Everything's going to be okay. Peter needed God to step in. There was no level of encouraging words that was going to save Peter's life out of that prison. Nobody could tell Peter, it's going to be okay. And Peter looked back and said, do you see these chains? Oh, Bubba here and whatever his name is, they're making sure I'm not getting out of here. I'm two wards deep in this prison, and there's an iron gate that is keeping me from here. You can say nice things to me all you want to, but I'm not getting out of here unless God moves. I want to say to somebody here, it's exactly the same in your personal situation. As much as the church loves you, the church is severely limited in what the church can do to offer to get you out of this prison in which you do not belong. I can weep over your situation. I can have pity because of these spiritual chains, these mental fetters that are keeping you bound. I can care. I can get deep in thought and say, what in the world can I do? But I cannot get you out of the prison that you find yourself in. And I want to ask you this morning, we're going to get to a place where I'm going to ask you, are you ready to come out? Are you ready to come out? The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy. He said there's recovery for those out of the snares of the devil when he has taken people captive at his will. But it's not going to be because somebody encourages you. It's not going to be because you think good enough. It's not going to be because somebody tells you it's going to be okay. Just keep on doing what you're doing. You need a move of God. And it's going to take God Almighty to bring you out of your prison. Now the night that Peter was delivered, let me tell you about this night from the description that we have. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Nothing. Everything was just like a regular night. The guard checked the doors, walked his rounds, made sure everybody's still in their place. An ordinary night. This might be a fairly ordinary service. And you being in your prison, you might think, not this time. It won't be this service. I mean, maybe if we'd have took off during the singing, we might have found it then. But I'm going to tell you, Peter's night started out just normal. Just ordinary. Nobody had any inclination. Nobody had any insight. There's an angel on the way. Nobody had a vision that said, there's an angel coming into this prison tonight. Nobody had any knowledge something big was about to happen. But the truth is, it wouldn't be long before Peter was free on an ordinary night in an ordinary service when the angel of the Lord showed up and sent this man free. When the angel came into the prison, he was completely unnoticed by everyone. You read there with me, the angel of the Lord came upon him. A light shined in the prison. I mean, think about that. The light of an angelic being lighting that place up. And since nobody was expecting him, Peter didn't even see it. The evidence that the angel was there was in the place. But Peter didn't stir. With the light. And the angel had come into this prison simply to rescue Peter. And it appears to me, Peter would have slept right through it. He would have slept right through his deliverance. The angel comes in. Can you imagine that angel going back to heaven and said, I opened up my jacket and there was light. And I stood there looking at him. And he just slept. So I let him be. Fortunately, that's not what happened. And maybe you're in the place that you've asked a lot of questions, but you've gotten to the place I don't even expect answers anymore. You may have gotten to the place I have prayed for deliverance, but I don't even think God's going to do that. I think this is how life is going to be until I leave this world. I think this is how I'm going to die. When I leave this world, the angels will pull me up out of this prison cell and that's how it's always going to be. But may I suggest to you today, maybe the answer has come. Maybe it came through a message that was preached, but you weren't paying attention. Maybe it came in a Sunday school lesson, but you were preoccupied. Maybe it was right there in your morning devotional that you didn't take time to read because you were just too busy. Maybe it came in a text message from a friend. Maybe there was a song that got sung, and all the while, it's that light. I'm here. I'm ready for you. But because you got so preoccupied, I'm in prison. You just couldn't hear it. You couldn't see it. You didn't notice it. It all happened. And you just accepted, this is my prison. This is where I'm going to be. There's no way that I'm ever going to get out. This is my prison. There's no escape. There's so little light that reaches this pit. I've already adjusted to how dark it is in here. There's chains. There's gates. There's guards. There's more than I can overcome. And so you've resigned. That's just how life is going to be from now on. Fate will have its way. But I want you to see what it was that happened to Peter. The angel comes, shines His glory in the place. Peter sleeps through it. The angel... smote him on the side. Grabbed him up from under the arm. Raised him up. Demands of Peter arise up quickly. We're getting out of here. You don't belong in this prison, Peter. I have come to make sure that you don't stay here. And the Bible says his chains fell from off his hands. And I wonder today, is that what it's going to take for you? Is it going to take a poke in the ribs? Listen! Is it going to take a supernatural power reaching down and raising you up and saying, get up quickly! Because you do not belong in this prison if Peter would have stayed. And he could have. I am convinced Peter could have looked and said, this is just a dream. I'm going back to sleep. No matter how many pokes. No matter how much raising up. No matter how many words would say, get up and get out of this prison. He could have said, this really isn't for me. You know what wouldn't have happened? You turn a few pages over in Acts 15, when the Pharisees who had gotten saved were disputing with Paul and Silas. Hey, we've got the law and we've got these guys talking about grace. I'm not sure Peter steps up and he said, no! No! With an authoritative voice. I was an eyewitness. God showed me. And how can we expect something of them that God no longer expects of us? If Peter had stayed in the prison, that dispute might have festered a little bit longer. If we had gotten to the place where Peter did not get out of that prison, we've got two letters from the Apostle Peter that would never have been written. You and I wouldn't be able to know that even though you're in heaviness for a season through manifold temptations, it's just a trial of your faith. It's much more precious than that of gold which perishes though it be tried with fire that you might be found under praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. We would never know the words of Peter. You know that you've not been redeemed with the blood, with corruptible things as silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. We'd have never read that, brothers and sisters. We would have never read. You are a chosen generation. A royal priesthood. A holy nation. A peculiar people which in time past were not a people, but now are a people. You were a people that had not obtained grace, but now you have obtained grace. You and I wouldn't know these words if Peter had stayed in his prison. We would never have read casting all your care upon him for he careth for you. We wouldn't have read that the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation. And we would not have read that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But because Peter responded to the supernatural call to come up out of that prison in which he did not belong, we are blessed. The early church was blessed. All of eternity is blessed because of what Peter rose up and became. Now I want you to consider today what have you not said yet, but God wants you to say? What have you not done yet that God really wants you to do? Who is needing help from you that you've not helped yet? Can I tell you, you're not going to say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done, help who needs to be helped in prison. It will never happen while you remain in prison, because this is not where you belong. Brother Austin, would you get us a song please? Peter had the advantage of an angel physically showing up and smote him on the side. Peter, grab your clothes. Grab your shoes. You're getting out of this prison. So I'm going to ask, maybe somebody today feels that nudge from heaven. Maybe somebody is feeling that lifting, saying, arise up quickly and come out of this place. It's time to get up. Me and you, I came here to rescue you. We're leaving this prison because you do not belong here. I want you to take seriously the words of the preacher from Psalm 46. God is our refuge. I want you to take seriously the words of the preacher that he is a very present help. And you do not belong in this prison. Please stand with me. Father, Lord, You didn't give it into the church's hand on that day to see that Peter was set free, but You saw to it Yourself. I believe today that the prison cell that someone or more than someone finds themselves in today, the church can't help them out. There's not enough power in positive thinking that they'll make it through this one. So I'm asking You today, if it takes it, Lord, smite them on the side. If it takes it, Lord, rise them up by the arm. If it takes it, God, thunder from heaven, arise up quickly, gather Your things, because it's time You come out of this prison. Lord, would You do that? Would You do that for us today? The church needed Peter out of that prison. And Lord, the church needs this one out of the prison too. So would You bring them out today? I ask this all in Jesus' name, Amen. And the altar is open. I don't want you to hesitate. I don't want you to sit back and go, I don't want anybody to think... Could you imagine Peter saying, oh, I'm not getting out of here. I'm embarrassed that I'm in here. Peter wouldn't have thought, what are the church going to think about me if they find out I'm in prison. No, Peter got up and he got out. So I'm asking somebody, take a step. There's a supernatural power present with us that will do what I can't do. It will do what the singing can't do. It will do what the testifying can't do. God Himself has showed up today and said, come on, let's get out of prison. Don't hesitate. Don't hesitate. You don't like it there. It's dark. The walls are slimy. You need help. And God is here to deliver. Come on. God is here to deliver up out of the prison. If we think that the pit of sin is the only pit that He'll bring us up out of, we're mistaken. If we think today that being lost is the only thing that God will deliver us from, no! You're His child. He's got His eye on you. Surely, somebody else, somebody else respond. Respond! Follow the angel. Follow the angel. Out of the first ward. Through the second ward. Watch that iron gate swing open of its own accord. And be free. Be free. Oh! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! It is so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take Him at His word just to rest upon His promise just to know the sense of Lord Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him how I prove to more and more Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus oh, for grace to trust Him more oh, how sweet to trust in Jesus just to trust Him with His blood Don't let this opportunity pass you today. Don't let this! I've preached, and I've had people approach me days later and said, you know, that was me. And they missed when the angel was there. They missed when the power of God was moving.
