Gil Vicente
Gil Vicente, also known as the Trobadour, was a renowned Portuguese playwright and poet who lived from approximately 1465 to 1536. He was not only a talented writer but also an actor and director of his own plays. Widely recognized as the foremost dramatist in Portugal, he is often hailed as the "Portuguese Plautus" and is affectionately referred to as the "Father of Portuguese drama." His contributions to Western literature have earned him a place among the greatest playwrights of all time. It is worth noting that Vicente's work extended beyond the Portuguese language, as he also delved into Spanish, making him, alongside Juan del Encina, a significant figure in the development of Spanish drama.
