The writer Lénoa de Ménoudané was willing to do anything to join the expedition of botanist Paul Gramard called L'Espalvare. In 1839, she embarked with her husband from Les Havres. She became the first woman to cross the Arctic Circle, and her journey was documented in nine letters published in 1854.
