However, it was his leadership in 1888 that truly put him on the map. He led a team that achieved the historic feat of being the first to cross the interior of Greenland. Nansen's fame continued to grow when he embarked on a North Pole expedition from 1893 to 1896, where he reached an unprecedented northern latitude of 86°14′.
