Red Bull had a good day overall in the race, with Max Verstappen cruising to victory after getting past Lewis Hamilton. However, there are some concerns about Red Bull's car, with Perez struggling more than Verstappen. The Red Bull car has impressive aerodynamics, and it will be interesting to see how the team performs in the second half of the season. Mercedes had a mixed day, with George Russell's car experiencing engine failure, while Lewis Hamilton finished in second place. There were some questions surrounding the legality of Russell's gearbox, but it was not clear whether any changes were made. Despite the challenges, Red Bull remains the team to beat for now. This is Fans Talk F1, the podcast. Yeah, starting from, shall we start at the top of the pack then? Shall we start with Red Bull? So yeah, starting with Red Bull then. So I think it's a pretty good day overall for Red Bull. I think you'd probably say a very good day in the office. Yeah, they'd be happy with that, wouldn't they? After yesterday's cross-party. Yeah, if you told them that was going to be the result today, they would bit your hand off for that, surely. And especially as well, if you consider where Perez ended up in the end. Yeah, I mean... After what was... MLA, shall we say that? Well, I think it's true, really. At one point, he was out of the points, then he was in the points. And then he just seemed to creep up, didn't he? With all of this stuff going on, which we'll obviously cover in a bit. But he just seemed to creep up and up and up and up, you know? I mean, in terms of Red Bull, Max was, once he got past Lewis, it was a damaged imitation, really. He was just cruising. And, OK, he might have gone off a couple of times, or once, or whatever it was, but I think that was more, like I said to you, I think he fell asleep at the wheel, rather than anything to do with the car. Yeah, he realised he was racing on a Sunday, thought he was doing a bit of sim racing or something, didn't he? Yeah, you said he fell asleep. I'll be a little bit controversial. I'll be a little bit controversial here. I happen to think there's a little bit of a niggle. And that's all I will call it, because that car is absolutely flawless as it stands on pace and whatever, and we'll come on to that in a second. I still think there's a little bit of a niggle there with it, and I think Perez is struggling with it more than what Max has. Yeah, I think it's the characteristics, isn't it? You go back to, we keep hearing drivers, well, not drivers, it's more the fans, isn't it, where they say one car's tailored towards one driver, isn't it, and such. But it's not, it's more that driver's style and the way it's suited, isn't it, is the answer to it. Yeah, so I think, if you summarise then, see, we're talking Red Bull. So Max, I think he had a bit of a, I was going to say flawless race, but I can't say flawless race, because I think with all the red flags, I think the only thing that's let him down today from being flawless would be his starts, his grid starts. Yeah. You know, it's, none of them, none of them were really good. But other than that, a really, really good drive. Like you say, once you got past Lewis, you know, we texted each other during the race, and the first thing I said to you, you know, Max, I think he'd got, what, two corners, three corners, and he was already nearly three seconds ahead. Unbelievable. That pace is something else. I mean, we saw, we saw Inspector Toto, you know, Curious George, you know, having a look at the Red Bulls, didn't we, afterwards, or during the red flags. They were both having the good news. But there's something about Red Bull, and I don't believe Conspiracy Inferiors is anything illegal or anything like that at all. It's just really clever aerodynamics. But whatever they're doing isn't just about a rear wing, or it's not just about one thing. It's about a combination of a lot of things. It's literally the way it works all together. And I think that's the problem. We're trying to replicate it. You can't, because you need all the design to do it. You can't just change the rear wing and go, oh, we'll try that, because that ain't what it is, that's all. No, and it'll be interesting to see after that Toto clip. It'll be interesting to see what the Misogys looks like in a few weeks' time after Inspector Toto. So, yeah, pretty much summarise Maxwell then. I think overall, like I say, he's had a good race. He stomped off into the front. He was definitely worried at one point. So he was definitely worried at one point when that last red flag came out. I think it's like anything, whatever the Red Bull is, it clearly, Max struggles off the line. Or he certainly has this season, whether or not it's the traction or what gear he's going in or the revs or whatever it is. It's not, it doesn't seem the quickest this year off the line, off the grid. So even though it's got that ultimate raw pace, as we know, and it's phenomenal with the DRS open, yeah, something else with that DRS. That obviously made him feel vulnerable and it would do anyway. I think Checo took, he took a while getting past a couple of cars. I mean, we joked about the McLaren, didn't we, at one point. He was sat behind him for quite a few laps, really. Quite a surprising amount of laps when you consider how easy Max flew past Lewis. So then to see Checo kind of stall behind the McLaren was a bit of an interesting story at one point, wasn't it? Yeah. Again, I think we had that conversation earlier. It was more present. You know, we're seeing Max and he comes into traffic and it just clears, it clears whatever's in front of him. Not a problem. Yeah, I think Perez today, whether it's driver, whether it's car, whether it's driver and car coming together, who knows? It just didn't seem to click. It didn't seem to, you know, like you say, he sat behind the McLaren for a handful of laps and kind of struggled. But then when he did get to get past him. Again, two, three, two, three seconds almost straight away. Yeah. It looked so easy when he did it. And then he pulled the gap again. So, yeah, it's a bit of a strange one. Like I say, I'm not going to change my stance. I still think it's Matty's year and I think it's still Red Bull's year. I don't think anybody catches that in the immediate future. So overall, if you're Red Bull, I'd say you're sitting happy and you're very positive. Yeah, I think the second half is going to be their struggle with wind tunnel penalties, how much development they put into next year, what they do with this year's car. I think that's when you might see the gap closing. But at the moment, you know, if we're talking about. All the cars are going to bring upgrades to Baku, there's actually a floor upgrade coming for Red Bull in Baku as well, apparently, which is a significant step forward they're pulling there. Now, if they're bringing a significant step forward. And it works, the rest are in trouble. That's a scary thought. That's what I mean. And literally a new floor in Baku. Yeah. And we'll end Red Bull on that because that's that's too much, too much. Do we end Red Bull? Well, do we talk about Max and Lewis? In two and three? Yeah, you can do, you can do. I don't, you know, there's nothing wrong with it. I think it's interesting comments was there afterwards. Yeah. Yeah. Did he give him enough room? Did he not give him enough room? I think he did. Yeah. I mean, he was clearly, he was clearly. I think he did. I think there was enough room there. There was enough room for him to back out if he wanted to. I think he was cast if he was going to. Yeah. But I thought I thought there was a bit of maturity in Max's driving the way he did actually back off. Yeah. And you know what? Right. I'm going to stop you right there because you've heard me time and time and time again bang on about this this point. And I'm I'm I can actually say I'm pleased to say today that that's not the case. And I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I Deep breath in, big breath in I just Come on I can't see anyone beating a Red Bull unless something happens to the Red Bulls and that's really yeah, that's just being honest at the moment You just can't see but Silverstone, the track that we're sitting on, it'd suit Mercedes as well. Let's be honest Yeah, we don't know about that. It's not traditionally a Red Bull favouring track is it so Yeah, I wouldn't put it put it out the rounds that's for sure and There you go A couple of questions there while we're, while we're skipping through Did seven Dan fellows know each other from Red Bull? Pretty sure that Dan was there when Seb was there He was there a long time wasn't he at Red Bull, can't remember exactly how much he was but He certainly would have known Orben from, from his contacts at Red Bull, put it that way Yeah So Aston aside, done with Aston? Happy? Happy with Aston? I'd say happy with that, they'd be happy with these points Yeah Good results for them, absolutely solid Let's go on to everyone's favourite team then, Mercedes Mercedes I feel like we er We'll, we'll go with the sorrow first so let's start with George George, I mean that car was literally like a rocket ship wasn't it at one point Yeah I still think there was a confusion about the gearbox, was it changed, wasn't it changed, you know we had We had big reporters saying, big people in the field saying yes it was changed Because there was a sensor issue And then there was no FIA documents to say it was touched at all So you know, now I'm sat here thinking because it wasn't changed, did they potentially just change the sensor? Could that be something that's led on to the engine failure they had? If they had changed anything major, they would have had to do it under part firmy, which would have been reported And nothing was, so you can only change a few little bits and it doesn't normally generate too much But you know, I know that Red Bull, they did some work on Checkers car for example, before the race Which I don't know how many people know that, he was looking at, he's taken like a third ICA, I believe there's something else in there as well So another engine part as such, which obviously doesn't incur a penalty But they did work under that and it was obviously reported So it wasn't a reported thing, it was genuine that it was done Now Mercedes, nothing was on there, so they can't have changed it on George So whether or not they found something and were going to change it, and didn't for whatever reason And that's what might have led to it I genuinely feel really, really sorry for George today though It's like if anything could go wrong today, it did go wrong Because he had an absolutely stonking start You know, he flew off that line And he got himself up there, and then they pitted And then the red flag came, which just fell short, didn't it And then I saw him in the car and I thought, he's going to chuck his toys out the pram Which I suppose we all would in that position, wouldn't we? You know, it's natural But he didn't, and he was calm and he was collected about it But yeah, I think he said in the interview, if anything could go wrong, it did go wrong Yeah, it's one thing for him, wasn't it You know, he fell out of luck with the safety car I did like the bit at the beginning where he was complaining about Lewis challenging him And talk about, you know, obviously protecting himself I mean, come on, Lewis is going to challenge him Second, third lap Yeah, when he's on about, what was it, something about conserving his tyres or something You know, you're telling me to conserve and I'm being attacked by my team mate I mean, come on, George It's always going to happen, you've got Lewis behind you, he's going to attack you Even if the team tell him not to do it, he's going to do it Yeah, and especially this early in the championship You know, he's never not going to, is he So, that was just rubbish And like I say, he just had one of them days where nothing went right for him Everything was just a disaster He'd be quite happy to call this one off Just quickly while we're talking about George there I got a question from somebody that said, are we worried about Mert reliability No, I don't feel like we are You know, I still think, you know, Mercedes over the years have been one of the most reliable teams that you can see on the grid You know, one incident doesn't make a bad apple So, I'm not overly worried No, I mean, I suppose we've got the question, did they turn it up? And maybe that's a cause for, would you say concern Or actually, maybe they're just trying to turn it up and eat a bit more out of it What are the gaps as big as it is? Yeah, it's the first injury failure and I can't remember that So, yeah, I think the last one, Lewis had was after he collided with Alonso in, was it Babington or something like that It was last year, wasn't it, when his car blew in the air and banged him There was one at Abu Dhabi, wasn't there, which was after a collision with soldiers, wasn't there The one before that was after a collision with Alonso So, the last time you actually saw a Mercedes engine on fire like that was quite a while ago, to be honest So, I wouldn't say I'm worried about it Maybe they're chasing something, maybe they're chasing the engine performance I'll tell you what it gave me flashbacks of It was Lewis Hamilton, wasn't it, in Malaysia No, no, no It was just instant flashbacks So, yeah, I think George had one of them weekends this weekend I think it'll be one of them when he closes his eyes tonight He's going to have a little bit of pain, a few nightmares, but he'll get over it, won't he But Lewis, he's gone to Lewis and overall I think he had a good weekend I think he drove a solid race Solid race, absolutely solid He didn't put any feet wrong anywhere as such, no foot wrong He was solid all the way through He looked comfortable in second, like I said, Alonso didn't put the pressure on him Maxwell's gone in the distance I'm sure he was good on the restarts, which there's been a couple of occasions in the past Where Lewis has been caught out on magic buttons and everything else on the restarts He actually looked quite quick on the restarts, what I thought There was a few instances, we'll pick up, there was a few instances of the, you know, these tyres aren't going to last You know, the typical radio messages that you get up to in every single race He puts them on, does the lap, and he says they're not going to last I'll hand on heart say no, and I think I said something similar to you earlier I generally don't think those messages are Lewis even talking to the team That's Lewis playing chess or Cluedo or whatever you like it is with the rest of the pack But they all do it, don't they We've seen Max with his 10 lengths on the safety car for example, that comment They're aimed deliberately to either forward provoke the stewards or they're aimed at the FIA Even though you're not allowed to aim them at the FIA aren't they But his are aimed for the Germans aren't they, they always are But like I say, as he's coming out of the pits, I kind of expect him to be able to play him out as far as Guaranteed You know, it's a guaranteed thing with Lewis But he looks happier, I thought this weekend actually He looked a lot more, I mean he did a lot of set up changes in the FP sessions, a hell of a lot He completely changed his car It's funny you say that, I mean I had to go and listen back to it But I think it was George on Saturday I think it was George was in his interview saying that I've done a lot of set up on this car It was almost like saying I've done this for the team and I've done that for the team And you know, we're doing this now because I've done it And I'm like, hmm, yeah, ok Yeah, a lot of sim work going on there, both Lewis and George were both in the factory this week doing sim work Yeah, at the beginning of the week and before they flew to Australia Just quickly before we move on from Mercedes, there was a question Are the Mercedes side wipes coming back? And we'll answer it briefly We feel like they are From the information that we know, we feel like they are coming back But one thing I will say, and I keep saying this time and time again in comments and other people's pages and stuff like that Side pods aren't just the issue You know, you can't, the thing with that is you can't just chuck a set of side pods on it and go, ta-da, fixed You know, you're essentially redesigning the whole car I think, again I did a TikTok earlier in the week about the centre of gravity And you can look at how far forward the Mercedes is compared to the Red Bull Where the actual driver position is And that's not an easy fix, that's redesigning pretty much everything about it And that's where you keep your hands on, not chucking some side pods on And also even putting side pods on, you've got to potentially redesign what's underneath those side pods as well Which, if you made it to go in a thin side pod area, and then suddenly You know, you've got this great I mean, it's interesting from what you said the other day as well In talking in terms of, you know, it's already, Toto wasn't it, you said it's already in the wind tunnel Yeah, there's a lot of contrast in reports, isn't there Yeah, we touched on that while we got this in, didn't we So, you know, they're contradicting their stories all the time So if you go from what Toto's saying, it's almost as if he's saying You know, we've kept the W13 into the W14 with a slightly different concept twist on it But we've stuck with the overall concept of that car And then, because we thought that was the correct path to go down But it might not be the correct path to go down We've also got, what Ted was saying at the start of the year, a B car Yeah, I mean, I think when that came out, I did a video and I said you can't develop two cars The concept doesn't let you develop two cars However, what it will let you do potentially is develop a car that can be adapted And we've seen quite a few things on the W14 that don't quite add up in terms of the look of it And the way it's compacted in and the shape of it And it looks like maybe that's the route they've gone down Where they've gone, actually, we need to change it So they've developed it in a way they can adapt it without doing too much development on it So you can still fit all the main components into whatever design you need to pull it into And again, we won't dwell too much on science, I'm just saying I don't know where that came from One thing Lewis keeps saying, though, is the seating position Now, was it you? I don't know, somebody sent me a picture of the Red Bull and the Mercedes side by side That's interesting to look at That does ping into what Lewis keeps saying, that he's uncomfortable with it But he keeps saying, look, I'm getting the best out of what I've got Anyway, Mercedes is good, because we'll sit here all night talking about Mercedes Yeah, like I said, they'll be happy with that They got second place on Meris, you know, simple as that They probably would have been interested to see George in the mix, let's be honest But should have, would have, could have, innit? Everybody's favourite team Because even if you're not a fan, and you don't admit you're a fan Everybody's a fan of Ferrari Ferrari? Right, Ferrari, let's start with... Let's start with Charles LePers, it won't take long, will it? Yeah, let's start with Charles LePers I mean, what is going on with this man at the moment? He's so shot of confidence, he's Danny Bear Kenny I feel like he's said something nasty to somebody somewhere And somebody's got a voodoo doll That's the only thing I can come up with at the moment, honestly Because no matter what the bloke does It never materialises for him, does it? Whether it's bad luck, whether it's mechanical failure Whether it's this, that or the other I feel for him, I really feel for him It just doesn't look competitive, I mean, now Someone's just put it in the comments there, the pace They haven't been right, and we can go all the way back And I can pinpoint where it changed Can you? TD39, when the floors were changed Last season, after the Zemacro directive The one where everyone thought that everyone was going to catch Red Bull Yeah, it's a load of rubbish It was Ferrari all the time who had the flexi floor You can tell, because you can literally pinpoint That is that time when the pace went And they were the only team who actually came out and said They had to change the floor on the back of the technical directive How have they not got round that now? Because they're the same reason as the other teams I mean, if you've got a flexi floor like that You've got a massive advantage in terms of downforce So you're not getting the performance from the engine You're getting it from the chassis and the floor, aren't you? If you change, you know, so your engine stays the same Because you've got your engine restricts in place But ultimately, that directive, running the cars Or whatever it changed, or whatever the wording Whatever the FIA did, hit Ferrari hard And it hit them a lot harder than what everyone else imagined Or even, even the commentators, they haven't pinned it back to that If you go back to it, that's when Benotto said at the time We're going to have to change our floor And as we've discussed with Mercedes, your floor is fundamental It's everything It's the most crucial part of the car, as everyone knows In such an aerodynamic time of sport, it is I just feel with Ferrari as well It's almost like a poison chalice I just think, I know it's still early days But they're not in any sort of type of fight this year, at all No I know it's daft to say, but I think we have to write them off Do you think they're, so we've got Charles Leclerc looks completely shot of confidence He needs something to get his confidence back But also, do you think there's going to be a driver change coming up then? I feel like Honestly, I feel like it's going to be next year There's a lot of people saying, no, no, it won't They'll stick with Charles See, they've got no loyalty To science He's not the number one He's not the homeboy, should we say But he can become the number one if he keeps outperforming And I think everyone's looking at Charles Leclerc And going, they'll never get rid of him No, he's Ferrari through and through, he's staying What you're not thinking about is It's also down to the driver, not just the team And I ain't being funny, Charles Leclerc Gets a seat at, I know we keep talking about Driver change and who goes where, and it's hard to see who goes where But, you know, Moussa, he's Red Bull Knocking on your door He's had so many years at Ferrari And the bad luck and the turmoil he's going through Are you going? I mean, Ferrari will stick with Leclerc, Leclerc will stick with Ferrari And that's the point, there's got to be two ways, doesn't there If you haven't got a total winning car, what is the point of stopping? There ain't none So short of confidence That sort of confidence, you're driving like that Unless he does a Lando And ties him down to a massive contract But the thing is, he's not tied into it as he should ultimately He's got his options open And if you're his advisor, you're kitted his name around the paddock If I'm Charles Leclerc's advisor, I'm putting my name in the hat For the other top teams that are coming up as well Just to stand out, you might be a little bit interested If nothing else, you're doing it to stand out Chris has put it the same as Vettel Exactly Ferrari's still one of them teams We talked about this last time we were on Would Lewis potentially go to Ferrari Because it's Ferrari and he's that team But you wouldn't now, would you? After the first race, Lewis was going to swap Mercedes for Ferrari Would you now? I wouldn't, I'd stick with Mercedes Mercedes has got more chance of catching the front than Ferrari Aston Martin has got more chance of catching the front than Ferrari As you see there, if Fernando goes Chuck that in Declare to Aston Martin, who knows We know that Lance is obviously here until infinity So what were we saying about Kyle last time? Penalty That was just pure agony Listening to Carlos in that car Was that a plea? Or was that anger? It's so hard to tell, there was clearly a lot of emotion there I think it was anger But here's how I stand with it The rules are the rules And the FIA implemented the penalty based on the rules Which is fair enough However, I think discretion could have come from the fact that The car that he hit, Alonso Didn't He didn't come off any worse He still kept his place I do kind of feel for him But at the same time I can also justify the penalty If you're counting back So you count back the places Back to the start But you then still give a penalty to somebody Who's involved in that Now technically it's a restart So that would have been a racing incident You would have gone first corner, restart Racing incident, carry on If that had happened on that one It would have been, let's be honest about that It was pretty innocuous as well He didn't steamroller into the back of it Logan Sargent steamrollered into the back of somebody What was that? But Carlos didn't do that There was a lot of squeezing going on And he clipped Flanders I keep talking about this And I know Ash is here, Ash is in the comments And she might be able to answer Do you feel like it's pressure getting to the drivers Do you feel like they're trying to over drive the car They're trying to get too much Which I know every driver does But my point is, do you feel like there's that added pressure on them as well I think there is if you're the likes of Ferrari aren't you I think some drivers who are potentially getting near the end of their contracts Getting near renewal time They're clearly feeling the pressure a lot more In terms of getting points But I think there will be something going on in the comments I can guarantee it about It's the brand name But the red flag was up before the drivers were out of sector 1 And where did the incident happen And this is the thing, so the incident happened Past safety car line 2 So technically you've got the safety car line they passed But they said that because there is an incident And it was obviously carnage They take it back to the start Because that's the best point with all the GPS and all the data So if you're taking it back There's a chain of thought that says did that penalty technically happen Or drawing a red flag Do you know what I mean You're contradicting everything by doing that But that's one thing we've always said about the FIA They'll write a rule but because they've written that rule They've got to write another rule It's constantly evolving all the time So they go oh we do this rule And suddenly they realise that under appendix 26.2 It contradicts somewhere else I think it was Ted during Yeah it was during the last red flag Yeah Ted was like there's 4 scenarios And he even went on to say I can see there's an FIA official And he's just fomming pages of the articles And he's just fomming them across Slicking his thumb and turning pages But then you can imagine him You can imagine him just sat there Playing top trumps with what to do Should we go for A, should we go for B He was lucky to get that penalty Knowing there was no chance to get it back When they even issued that penalty They did that and interestingly I know we're going to come on to Alpine But Alpine always offering nothing So Ferrari done My personal feeling is I think that Simon was unlucky With the penalty As I've just said I do feel like he's unlucky with the penalty But at the same time I can justify it I can at that point The FIA rule does exist on the website It certainly does Yeah and good luck with that one After reading it and coming through it It's definitely there, it is visible Knock yourself out with it Let's move on then to everybody's I can't even think of a witty name to call them We'll just go with McLaren Can we just stop right there Because we're doing it based on championship standings How did McLaren sneak in here Because nobody else other than Red Bull, Mercedes and Aston It's not even the season so far The first race was a complete disaster for them The last race wasn't actually that good And somehow in amongst all of the chaos today There were two McLaren drivers Who did amazingly well to get their noses out of trouble Ash just sneaking in there with a valid point Just remember there was 8 DNS Just for the audience It's clearly what's happened though Because they've obviously set themselves out of trouble But you've got to finish a race Ultimately you've got to be in it to win haven't you Or in McLaren's case in it to score points A bit like Aston Martin, they will be absolutely delighted They know that their cars, can we say underperforming Is that the technical right word for the orange tractor Red Bull alluded to in their promo video When we first started this was Looking at Zac Brown I'm sick of saying this Terrence I don't know why we keep seeing Zac Brown However, that story aside It looks like a bit of pressure has been lifted off him He was joking about I'll get this little segment in there by the way Zac Brown vs Christian Horn at Silverstone Driver vs Driver And he also went on to say For Netflix issues by the way He's reached out to Toto, he's put the idea to him Zac Brown vs Toto Wolf In Las Vegas In a boxing ring Now I would pay some good money to see that Some very good money to see that That's interesting for the horizon Going back to the two McLaren cars I think Lando had a good race overall It was one of them, it was a bit But he got there didn't he I know there was 8 DNFs so you can't read too much into it He did some good bits of racing If he had a few points Points on his home race His interviewer did need points I couldn't think of a better price to do points in my home race First home race as well They're crying out for it pretty strongly The only thing I will say for McLaren is I get the feeling I don't want them to get ahead of themselves Because of this And I don't think they will I know it's pressure releasing I just don't want them to get ahead of themselves They got points, they got 4 weeks off Back to a great time for them as well If you look at the championship standings After the opening race they would have taken that They would have quite happily gone If we were placed there Them above Alpine, they would be happy to be above Alpine That's for sure going into spring break Can we call it spring break? Let's call it whatever you like Let's call it China's not there So we'll just create a break I feel like we've done McLaren There are no seas of a McLaren fan Double points on the podium They did well in the IndyCar as well That's what I'm saying It's been that doom and gloom It has been a bit doom and gloom for McLaren this year Everyone has written them off already I think Zach has written them off at one point To get 2 cars in the points and come away It's a solid result It's a good result Got there in the end 47 in counting Don't get me on that 47 sponsors on McLaren So Terry, McLaren done I'm going to tee you up now Please tell me where I want to be We're going to Alpine And I am just going to take a step back here I know you've got all this in your head Don't mute yourself It's just brilliant It's taken to race 3 For my prediction to come true That the Alpine boys will tangle And they didn't last tangle But There is a but There was no fireworks The first time two drivers come together There will be fireworks And again, I will clarify I have watched that incident over and over again Nothing Gazley could do Have you watched the social media messages The pair of them together put out It's like somebody From the social media team Before you go home You really need to do this social media message To all of the fans Honestly, it's terrible Whatever might be going on The bottom line is Alpine just took each other off Cost themselves some points Cost themselves some big points as well Even if it won't show They had a rocky relationship before Gazley, he's a lucky boy The other point I'm going to come to Do we think that if there was any other driver Or team involved That Gazley wouldn't have got any penalty points Guaranteed Ashley just put it this way He's not happy with that Ash If you've got two racers You take each other out like that With their relationship It will come to a head eventually It might not even now But it's incident number one And you know what it's like They saw Rosberg and Hamilton Before I watched Caroon dissect it And go into the detail of it I was like, that's Gazley's fault Don't think anything will come of it But Caroon actually went into the detail of it He went off, he's got sleepy tyres He's come back on, he's had a snap He's actually looking at his left mirror And his car is going right They were always going to come together It wasn't Ockham's fault And there was nothing Gazley could do to stop it Was it worse than Carlos and Alonso? No As I said, I think Carlos For me I think Carlos was to blame for that The argument being He would have known there was cars coming Because it's a resource I'm going to say my big word here again Caveat to that would be, it's gravel You put yourself in the driver's mindset I think it was grass or a run off He would have stopped and let the traffic off Because it's gravel, you've got that mindset That's me done, I'm done I just think, from my point of view They might be putting this big public show on Of we're the best mates I don't think there was fireworks today But I think it's the start of They've lit the tinderbox between those two All it takes is something to happen in Baku now Between those two And it's going I mean the smile on your face says you're here for it You're invested Say you're invested and we'll move on I'd just like to be in proof of right Disappointing They get themselves out of the point And ultimately they're going to be disappointed with that Whichever way you look at it This is going to be a tough one Because Haas is just one of them teams at the moment The only way I can summarise Haas at the moment is Meh Yeah, I mean they're suffering from Having a Ferrari engine aren't they, quite clearly And it's interesting that we talk about Ferrari engines And actually all of the Ferrari powered cars are struggling As well as we say about the floor This increased horsepower from Ferrari And actually it hasn't come about Unless it has come about but they know it's a ticking time bomb So like we said previously they've turned it down But all of the Ferrari engines took ICs This week as well So there's something going on with the Ferrari engines Definitely going back to their engines and floors But I mean Haas He was OK until he bent it into a wall And caused a lot of the carnage If they bend it into a wall I think I actually made a TikTok on it And he actually tried to turn his F1 car into a Robin Reliant Do you know what, it was a strange one wasn't it It was a strange one because you've got that corner You've got that sharp exit of the wall And it's almost as if you thought I forgot about the back wheel And it just took it off clean Magnussen is struggling this season isn't he I was one of the people who said that Hulkenburg maybe shouldn't have come back But actually maybe he should have come back at the expense of Magnussen Because Hulkenburg, you know Do you think with Magnussen Last year or the year before he had a child So he's now got a child in his life So obviously that's going to happen I suppose you've got to throw that into the mix as well If you look at how he stacked up against Schumacher last year And you look at how he stacked up Hulkenburg Hulkenburg, you know, seventh place was solid Looked the faster driver again this weekend Looked the more likely of the two to score points all weekend Was well up there, if they hadn't reshuffled the pack I think someone's put there was on the podium Schumacher arguing and making their protest was always going to happen Gunther was never going to knock it, was he And rightly so Even when you look at the protest and you look at the reason behind it It still doesn't really make sense, to be honest Right, I feel like we've done me half I feel Hasse will be Is it fair to say disappointed overall over the weekend He'll be disappointed but then there'll be gathered points for Hulkenburg So I think they'll take the points They won't read too much into it though because obviously with the ADNF He's one of the more fortuitous I think we're going to move on to my Biggest downfall of the year I've said it Alfa Romeo Where are they? Do you remember we watched And we were like, oh yeah That looks alright Where's it gone? The car might look alright but it's performing like a Absolute satisfaction, it's terrible, it's shocking Is this Audi development? Is this a sign that actually they're switching things up now? I suppose you've got to ask now Is this them reining it in? They don't really care Sort of attitude They're not going to be us in 4 years time They've got 2 different teams working together And it's really complicated actually They've got the salvo engine side Which is working with Audi On the 2026 project And they've got the aero side working with But it hasn't got Audi involvement yet But if you're Alfa Romeo The chances are you've taken those people Off that development because it's about to end at the end of this year So I think there's probably been a lot of good people who've left Who've been pulled back by whoever, been poached, whatever that looks like You've got the Audi people who haven't started yet Or if they have haven't got F1 knowledge as such And I think you've just got this mismatch of a team at the moment Which doesn't know where they're going with development And I think Audi, it's not our name on it So we're cool, we're not really too worried about it I get the feeling that Alfa are sort of saying the same I think Alfa are going So they're kind of one foot out the door They're going So they're not willing to invest You've then got Audi going, well we're not too bad There you go, cross-river period, that's what it is Literally it's that in-between is it Audi are starting to work, they're staking it, it's just a mess And will it get better this season? I don't think it will I think it's a long season, I think they're writing off I think they will deliberately put their developments into next year And I don't expect that to be a lot But even if it is I think you'll see more of it going into next year I don't think they'll be too worried about it But Valtteri, he was not insistent Joe, where's your Joe? You can say Joe, go on Do the whole lot, because you can't do Joe You're not doing it to me, it's Joe Guang Yu Joe Guang Yu, aka Joe Joe finished 9th didn't he? He's actually It seems to be quite a good start to the season Well Bottas is in his mullet era He's joining his hippie phase He's starting the revolution And it's amazing It's amazing because Bottas Seems the happiest, the chirpiest More of himself, Bottas That I've ever seen And it's amazing because he hasn't got the car there to back it up Imagine what you'd have seen if you'd have seen that Bottas at Mercedes But maybe he needs pressure Maybe he's a driver He's been open and talks about how he likes The Alfa Romeo lifestyle But actually maybe he's someone who When he had to fight for his place When he had that year on year contract with a top team Maybe that's what he needed to get the best out of him Bottas was not even shown on TV So that's not just Alfa Romeo I think that was a lot of Haas, there was a lot of Alfa Romeo There was a lot of Alfa Tauri in there as well Williams wasn't really shown Alfa Tauri wasn't really shown I think the whole Bottom half of the grid For whatever reason this weekend I think Gerry would be happy with a couple of points I think they're in a crossover period I think they're in for a long season I can't see it changing anytime soon And I think while Audi are in the background changing stuff over Seidel's gone missing, I think someone said earlier in the comments He's clearly working on stuff in the background They're building a good team behind closed doors for Audi And I think that's where they're going with all this Let's move on to Alfa, now this is going to be a very quick one Because quite frankly I've got nothing to say about Alfa Tauri I can't give you nothing Are they really Red Bull's sister company here? It's almost as if that tie's gone And I find that strange Because I think I remember saying to you at the start of the season That you'll probably find, not officially but unofficially That they'll become Red Bull's tester further down the line When they've run out of Winton all the time But that doesn't look like it's going to happen this time of year Does it? It's clearly not going to happen I mean UK obviously crept into the points at the end Nick Debre Nick Debre Nick Debre's a good one now As Carlos told us But it's the car though isn't it I mean ultimately you can drop both drivers But if they're completely driving a complete tractor of a car It doesn't matter what driver you're going to put in it It's not going to perform is it? I can't see Nick being dropped But I'd put 90% of my time and effort behind you If you're not being there next year I don't know, maybe another year It just amazes me how you've got two teams that have got these things That are so polar opposite There's nothing similar on there I mean you can never accuse them of cheating or sharing information Let's be honest about that You've got more chance of Aston Martin doing something similar to Red Bull than AlphaTauri So Terry I know for a fact That you have been looking forward to this all evening We're going to move on to Williams We're going to move on to what we're going to now call The Kamikaze Drivers, the Williams pair What, what's going on with those two I mean Alvin looked like he was more unlucky than Driver Yeah that was a very strange one He looked like he had a bit somewhere Dropped a tyre somewhere didn't he Yeah he dropped on the kerb didn't he I've seen the onboard from I want to say Hulkenberg No, I think it was Hulkenberg Oh yeah, where he actually went And the crash happened in front of him, how I don't think that was Alvin's fault He was actually having a good weekend up until that point He'd gone to Q3, Williams is definitely looking improved It's looking a lot better car But it's always had that top speed anyway hasn't it Through the speed trials, even when it was past two seasons It's always been fast, it's been the areas that let him down But Logan Sargent, what was that He's a very lucky boy, he got two penalty points Mate, honestly What were the shoes doing not looking at that It was comical really wasn't it You watch that over and over again, it's quite comical He didn't brake mate There was no attempt to turn, no attempt to brake, nothing Just stride for the back He thought he was playing F1 2020 Damage turned off and it would go fine And the bloke would just disappear in front of him Because that was just crazy A bit of Mario Kart Rainbow Ring restart He is a rookie and he is There is a learning process Learning to press the brake pedal There is a learning process but ultimately He's got to face the consequences I still think he should have got a penalty You go back throughout the years I think Gasly has been Less unfortunate than most when it comes to penalties I think you look at some of the stuff he's got penalties for And you think, nothing Not even a mention That's where the FIA just let themselves down That's where they all do this thing Whatever they do, something like that comes out He's a rookie here It's one of those weekends to forget for Williams They were looking strong for some points I don't blame him for that He's either caught somewhere Or he took a wrong line Overall a disappointing weekend Definitely One to forget for Williams Are we happy that we've covered the field? I think we've covered the field Let's move on then Ash, are you still here? Ash, can you put you're still here in the comments? I don't think there's anybody else here I've made Ash a mod Ash, you can actually I think she's still here Ash, I think you can pin comments If you do see a comment that keeps pinging in And I miss it, just pin it so we can see it We're going to move on to quickfire questions So, get your quickfire questions in And then what we'll do is Answer them as short and sweet as we can How does that sound? Anyone catch the Minecraft part from Crofting? Jesus, there you go Michael Massey being in the Paddock I thought it was Michael Massey being in the Paddock At one point on 40 years back into race control To be honest, he made some mistakes He owned it for his mistakes He was back in the Paddock for lots and lots of reasons Obviously to do with supercars And being part of the Australia delegate with that It's time to move on isn't it With what happened in 2021 I don't want to say the words because it leads into some big debate We are definitely not mentioning that My two pennies on Michael Massey I get fans' frustrations It still hurts That's not going to end anytime soon You don't want to see his name associated with the sport Unfortunately, he wasn't there in any context of the sport He was there as a fan He was already in the country to do with V8 supercars They took part in it And he was a guest of the FIA As I said, I get it Are we happy with it? Some people are happy with it No, but it is what it is He runs a V8, most people in that capacity would have been there Let's be honest about it He was there in his capacity as president of whatever they are doing now Completely agree I think it was made more out of the media I agree with Steve People expect him to never work again Was the car sign penalty correct? I'd say it was correct But I think it was harsh Correct but harsh, yes, agree There you go Nice endorsement I don't know how you do it I think you just hold down Come on, get your comments in Lewis and podium celebrations So, Lewis and podium celebrations So his team wasn't there on the podium But somebody did say to him They were in the garage, but I don't know why Strange one The only person that was there was his new trainer Interesting though We'll try and do some digging on that I haven't got anything to tell you Other than it's very strange Fought on the FIA It's gone, it's gone Back to one race director, too much pressure No No, I think the centre they set up in Geneva Is too much pressure I think there's too much interference going on Behind the scenes Two together I don't know how much people realise what's going on But they've got a whole control centre back in Geneva Like the teams have done over the years And that is their VAR So it's not one race director It's a whole centre And interestingly That's what's going on I think there's too much meddling in the background We heard it in the last race Where Geneva said it was fine I think there's going to be some meddling going on in the background From this control centre I'm not sure if it's too much pressure I think it's too many people getting involved GS Commercials has said Why is the Red Bull DRF so effective? Is it rigged to the batteries? I don't know I messaged you earlier We've had a lot of people telling us With triple DRF and main beams on the back And all of these things And the one thing I have noticed Is each time a Red Bull breezes past someone It drops off before And I don't know why that is It comes at it from a distance I'm not sure whether that's a combination of DRF and battery When you see those big overtakes You go back to this time And you go back to one before They definitely come at it from a distance Rather than when they're sat right behind them They need the toe To get everything in touch It's almost like a slingshot It's a combination of the toe, the DRF open And everything out The DRF has been around for 13 years Terry's Port will Aston win a race And if so, where? I've said Silverstone I think if any chance there will be a track like Silverstone Because the other tracks are not going to But I do think it's going to rely on some retirements Rather than winning it pure out I don't think they can win a race this season with the car they've got And it only takes something like Alonso to stick it on in Monaco for example If he manages to peg it with someone like Monaco Where you can't get past There's a pretence isn't there If you had to choose one track F1 should have replaced China with Which track should it have been? Well, is that Should we choose one historically or one where we could have actually gone Yeah, one where you could have actually gone, let's say that Portugal would have been the best bet wouldn't it shortly Yeah, fair assessment, Europe Turkey Would have been another good option Lewis and Bottas or Lewis and George Depends does it I think I think from a team point of view Lewis and Bottas isn't it Lewis and George, George wants to impress us He wants to be the number one And you can't take that away from him It's a difficult one to answer though because I know where you're coming from Because I absolutely love George We touched on it before, you know how I feel about Lando I can definitely see George being a future world champion Yeah, I think there's no doubt he's going to be the number one driver But I also feel If Lewis does start a couple more seasons There's going to be a bit of tension between the two George is definitely not going to play second fiddle like Bottas did for him If you could bring back a driver from the past Who would it be, Ayrton Senna Easy one, I'd love to see Ayrton in Ayrton Senna If the DRS is rigged to the batteries, is that legal There's nothing on the Red Bull being legal Can I just say They've been checked by the stewards Whatever the Red Bull is doing is legal There's been no protests There's been no noise of it, there's been nothing from the stewards I don't think there's anything legal on the Red Bull I think it's just brilliant engineering Terry again, you've been waiting for this question all night What do you think about the track invasion with the car still on the track Wow I know that someone from I've never seen a race organiser summon to the stewards before That's got to be a theorist hasn't it When I read that I was like, did I read that right And the Victoria Police are going to be involved So they've got to report it back to the Victoria Police as well And the fact finding is going to be dealt with back to the FIA The stewards have dodged it haven't they We want you to fact find this We want you to get the information They've had their hands up and said it's wrong And they've had their hands up and said it should have happened But I think the stewards have gone, we're not dealing with that I think there will be a fine, I think there will be some security in place I think there will be a slap on the wrist and a fine I hope it doesn't do anything At the end of the day, if what happened at Silverstone resulted in what it did And they still got their licence and they can still race I can actually see them quoting that as almost like a case law for it So I imagine it will be much tighter security, much tighter for next year But I think there will be a fine and a slap on the wrist Ricardo to replace Perez next year? Eyes emojis No You're thinking way too hard about that I can see your eyes rolling, I can see your brow frowning I don't think that It's sad because I don't think that Checo Is going to be Red Bull's long term answer But The pace in now, Red Bull tend to When they move drivers they tend to demote and promote I mean they're notorious for changing drivers But they don't tend to get rid of drivers, they tend to swap them With AlphaTauri I can't see that happening, let's be honest I can't see I think Checo might struggle on a renewal But that's still 2024 So you've still got this season and next season to be honest I mean it's interesting to see what Red Bull said Whether he's got any weight behind it The only way it will be if there's a move that suits Checo Somewhere that materialises will be what I'd say And maybe Red Bull wouldn't stand in his way Miss Honey has just put you down my opinion on Daniel Ricardo And that is why we're not going to go into it Miss Honey Well serious for one, will Danny ever race in F1 again? I don't know where Danny fits in if I'm honest I just don't Listen for me right I get what he's done and I wholeheartedly and consistently say I totally understand why he's done what he did But where does he fit back into the grid would be my question Unless he's willing to drop down the grid Lily's just put a good question in there Just found Daniel's comments this week interesting Think they'd be rather harsh on Perez And Ted grabbed him at the end and Daniel said He's not done by any stretch of the imagination He's not gone yet and his main focus is to get back racing But as we've said with most drivers There's going to have to be that realisation I don't think it's Red Bull so I think Daniel's going to have to lower his standards I think Steve put it there That he thinks he deserves the top team seat and he wouldn't take less Unless he's willing to take less I don't think he'd race again Ashley's just put Would they put him in the Alpha Tauri to replace Yuki But would he go knowing how bad the Alpha Tauri is Well it's an F1 seat Depends what sort of promises he gets from Red Bull I could see it It's not a bad show that Ash I'll let you have that one Best rookie of the season so far Before today Logan was doing well Oscar Pastry I've been impressed with Was Lando having a bit of a dig with his comments After the race Oscar Pastry Pastry But was Lando having a bit of a dig towards Danny Did you see that one He's being pushed more Being pushed more now than what he has been in the past couple of years Don't break the bromance bro I still think Oscar's going to outscore Lando I said that at the beginning of the year I still stand by that I think that when he gets up to speed My minutes stood on Oscar beating Lando Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet Nick Peet
