Gender equality is the main topic of discussion in a podcast. The definition of gender equality is given as treating both men and women equally in all aspects of life, including work and salary. Stereotypes are identified as one of the main challenges to achieving gender equality, and society is blamed for perpetuating these stereotypes. The pay gap between men and women is mentioned, with women earning 17% less than men on average. Driving and household chores are also discussed as areas where gender equality needs to be addressed. Laws and organizations working towards gender equality are mentioned, as well as government schemes in India to promote education for girls. The idea that men also need to support gender equality is mentioned, and the importance of cooperation and equal treatment for both men and women is emphasized. Hi everyone, I am Nivet. I am the moderator of our podcast team, Genfinity. We are doing a podcast on gender equality. Hi, I am Ashwin. I am Alok. I am Rihanna. I am Omisha. I am Jebin. I am Ethan. I am Shal. So, what is gender equality? Good question, Ashwin. According to me, I think gender equality is when both men and women are treated equally, not just for their household choices but also in the occupational field. So, they should be given the equal amount of salary for the same jobs they get and they should be treated equally and be given various opportunities irrespective of their gender. And if gender equality is implemented in our day-to-day world, then we will have a much peaceful life than we have now. Yes, you are correct. One of the main things holding back gender equality is stereotypes. Jebin, can you talk about stereotypes? Stereotypes are major challenges to achieve gender equality. And you know who is largely responsible for stereotyping? Society. Because whenever someone wants to do something, or for example, if a woman wants to be a professional footballer, society will not encourage them. Stereotypes, as I mentioned an example earlier, is all about restricting someone's choices in life. Thankfully, our modern society is abolishing this. Just like Jebin said, nowadays there are many professional women footballers like Sam Kare and there are many pro-male chefs like Gordon Ramsey. Yes, one of the other things holding back gender equality is the pay gap, which is the gap between the pay a man earns and a woman gets. In 2022, women earned an average of 17% less than men. For every dollar a man earned, a woman earned 82 cents. Well, now let's talk about driving. Nowadays, some news was spread that women are causing major accidents and that they are not fit for cars. But basically, it's their wish that which vehicle they should ride. However, not all women are causing major accidents. Just like occupation, stereotypes and driving contribute to gender equality laws tough too. Laws help make gender equality easy to implement. Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961, the Hindu Submission Act of 2005 and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act of 2013 are some important laws of gender equality. I don't know a few organizations. By the way, an organization is a group of people who work like a neighborhood association, a charity, a union or a corporation. Eight organizations which are fighting for gender equality are UN Women, Association for Women's Rights and Development, Womankind Worldwide, Center for Reproductive Rights, Plan International, Women's Environment and Development Organization, Women for Women International, Equality Now. So, Ethan, we have talked about how the government and other people are making organizations and laws to promote gender equality. So, in each country also, the government plays an important role too. And that's by implementing schemes. So, in India, the government has brought up a very good scheme for girl children, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Scheme, SSYS Scheme. So, especially in North India, in the rural areas, girls are not promoted to join schools and have a proper education. So, this scheme allows them to join government schools in which they can receive proper and free education. And also, as they are getting good education, they can eventually practice a degree and get a good job of their own. So, this promotes gender equality as well in parts of North India, which is good for the development of our country as well. But, what about men? Nowadays, you can see many women protesting for their rights that they already have. But, what about men? Have you ever seen a man protesting for their masculinity? Never. Men should either stop protesting for their rights or women should stop protesting. Yes, that is true. Unlike the past, nowadays, women have many rights. An example of this is, when a woman hits a man, it's known as self-defense. But, when a man hits a woman, it's known as offense. Now, we have talked about organizations and love. Now, let's go on to household. From cooking and cleaning to fetching water or taking care of children and elderly, women carry out at least three times more unpaid household works. Well, I think men also do household chores like moving the grass, sorting out films, etc. Everyone has to cooperate for gender equality. And, men and women should be treated equally to maintain gender equality. Thank you.
