Hailing from the fog-choked river flats of Davenport, Iowa, The Velvet Howlers were a short-lived 4-person trio known mostly for their frontman, Lonnie “Low-Tone” Delvecchio, a teenager cursed with a voice two octaves lower than anyone his size should reasonably possess. Local lore says the band recorded “I'm Sorry (I'm Not the Type You Want)” in a single take after Lonnie downed half a bottle of cough syrup, resulting in the signature subterranean croon.
