Emma discusses how her thinking on social media has changed since starting the COM 2100 course. At the beginning of the semester, she had limited awareness of the diverse influences and biases associated with media use. She only relied on a narrow range of platforms for information, such as Instagram and TikTok. However, after widening her search, she realized the importance of critically analyzing media content and exposing herself to diverse perspectives. One of the most memorable topics she learned in the course was the effect of media on people, including the third-person effect. Emma believes this information will be helpful in her future career as an elementary school teacher, where she can use media wisely in the classroom as handheld devices become more common. Overall, the course has made her more prepared and will make her a better teacher in the future. Hi, my name is Emma and today I am going to revisit my media assignment inventory and talk about how my thinking on social media has changed. I am also going to speak with a friend about their general knowledge on social media and talk about how I may or may not agree with their opinions about the material following my enrollment of COM 2100. At the start of the semester, I had limited awareness of the diverse influences and potential biases associated with media use. My skills in critically analyzing media content were so basic, and I wasn't actively involved in social issues on media platforms as I perceived they were unrelated to my interests or my life. Additionally, I relied on a narrow range of platforms for my information, which restricted my exposure to diverse perspectives. From my interview at the beginning of the semester, where I stated social media was the most important media content, this next part is the original audio from my interview with a fellow classmate. Which of the following areas is most important to society right now? Why? Can you give an example? As you can see, I was very narrow-minded and only got my current news from platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Now I see how flawed that is. I now use different current news websites, the news, and still some social media platforms all mixed together. After I widened my search, I see so many different views that make me think more critically about the world around me and media itself. Out of all the topics I learned in Communications 2100, the most memorable to me was the effect media has on people. In our society now, media surrounds us everywhere. It's as simple as a game ad popping up on your phone to promote you to play the game more, to the news of a current event with a catchy title to capture viewers' attention. In this course, we learned about so many concepts, such as the third-person effect. The third-person effect is when a person believes that someone else is more influenced by the media than they are themselves. This effect is often seen in high school or college-age kids. For an example, if a famous YouTuber started a trend that smoking was cool, her followers would be subconsciously influenced to follow that trend. All of that came from one YouTuber that started smoking. That is an example of the third-person effect. Someone who underestimates the effect of media on themselves, but overestimates the effect of media on another person. This information will also be super helpful in my future career as I go on to teach young children in elementary school. I will be able to use media wisely in my classroom as handheld devices are becoming more and more common in the classroom. This is all new to teachers and I'll know how to manage media during school when kids have open access to the Internet. Because of this class, I am now more prepared, which will make me a better teacher in the future.
