However, Jodi shot Travis and then stabbed him 28 times and slit his throat. This suggests a crime of passion. Although women are more likely to kill intimate partners, Jodi and Travis were not officially together at the time. The main point is that the manner of killing is unusual for a female killer. So now that we've kind of talked about the background of the case, there are some pretty important factors of crime that I want to discuss that are pretty interesting in terms of Jodi's case just because some of them are pretty atypical for female killers in general and I think there's a great discussion that we could have about that. So first let's just talk about the manner of killing. Lindsay what can you tell me about the manner of killing in this case? So the way that Jodi killed Travis was actually somewhat atypical for females. So according to a study by Harrison Hughes and Gutt written in 2019 on the sex differences in female and male serial killers, it found that females tended to kill their victims in a much less violent way. So shooting and stabbing was actually higher in men as a manner of killing than women and murdering via poison was roughly 40% higher in women than males. So bringing this back to Jodi, Jodi was suspected to kill Travis by gunshot first but she kept going. Kind of showing that this was a crime of passion because she not only killed Travis by that initial gunshot but then she proceeded to stab him 28 times, then slit his throat after he was already probably presumed dead. Yeah so again this is like very atypical according to that academic source that we just mentioned. It would be more suspecting that Jodi would actually poison Travis. That would fall in line better with this pattern that we discussed. But also there is one thing that is typical in this killing that people or women are more likely to kill an intimate partner than men. So that I guess does fall in line but even that could maybe be argued because technically Jodi and Travis weren't together at the time even though they were having sex. So like the lines are definitely blurred here but the main thing that is atypical is the manner of killing. Yeah.
