In Mario Kart 64, the level design is the standout feature. There are 16 unique tracks with different environments and obstacles. The tracks are stunning and each one is well-crafted. The game starts with simple tracks that allow players in last place to catch up, but as you progress, the courses become more complex and challenging. But most importantly, where the game adds a lot of depth is once again in the level design. The tracks are incredible. While Super Mario Kart reused the same environments for multiple tracks, in Mario Kart 64, each of the 16 tracks has its own environment, obstacles, textures, and identity. They are stunning, and that's what really impressed everyone. That's where the development team really excels, and each one of them is magnificent. Starting with simple tracks, of course, very open ones that allow players in last place to quickly catch up and even win the race. Such as Luigi Raceway, where you can cut a good part of the track with a star or mushroom. Or more prominently, Koopa Beach, where there's a shortcut halfway through that cuts a large portion of the track and can change everything. But the further you progress in the game, the more you'll encounter the complex technical courses, where shortcuts are less common and driving is more difficult.
