The world is ending as we know it
The speaker emphasizes that the entire ecosystem is collapsing due to human actions such as burning fossil fuels, destroying nature, and releasing carbon into the atmosphere. The slow progress of governments means that three degrees of warming is likely unless more is done. The speaker criticizes the focus on money and economic growth, stating that technical solutions and business as usual will not solve the problem. Climate change impacts are already being felt, with some rural areas suffering disproportionately. In a three-degree world, extreme droughts and water scarcity will affect millions of people, while wealthy cities will not be immune to the consequences. The speaker calls for action to reduce emissions and warns that a three-degree world would lead to global trouble. They emphasize the need for a new industrial revolution fueled by sustainable innovations to save the planet. Despite the challenges, the speaker believes that if humanity works together, we can save the planet The entire ecosystem, we're collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. Our burning of fossil fuels, our destruction of nature, our approach to infrastructure construction and learning, our releasing carbon into the atmosphere at an unprecedented pace and scale. This is a problem that babies you pass on the street will have to live with. The scale of change needed and the slow progress of governments so far means three degrees of warming is uncomfortably likely unless more is done. For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away? Some rural parts of the world are suffering disproportionately. Today, those who have done the least to cause this problem are being the hardest hit. At three degrees, over a quarter of the world's population could endure extreme droughts for at least a month of the year. But for some, too much water will be the problem. And high so-called wet bulb temperatures are on the rise. At a high wet bulb temperature, the body can't lose heat and so it gets hotter and hotter. And the body is designed to work at a given temperature. And if it gets too hot inside, you will die. If all you can talk about is money, the imperative of eternal economic growth, how dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions? We are already in trouble. So far, many developed cities have gotten off late. Ultimately, all of us will feel the impact, some of which are now unavoidable. Even wealthy cities in rich countries wouldn't be immune to the consequences. In a three degree world, tens of millions of people a year could be displaced by disasters made worse by climate change. Come here saying that you're doing enough, when the politics and solutions leaders are still nowhere in sight. As migration around the world increases, there could be more competition for fewer resources. Water, already a highly contested resource, will be a focal point. Smallholders, small-scale farmers, are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Smallholders with farms under two hectares produce around a third of the global food supply. The stability we all depend on is great. You are failing us. Despite existing pledges, greenhouse gas emissions are still set to rise by 16% from 2010 levels by 2030. This is how our story is due to end. A tale of the smartest species doomed by that auto-human characteristic of failing to see the bigger picture in pursuit of short-term goals. The need to act has never been clearer. There's still time to reduce emissions. The best way to deal with a three degree world is not to go to a three degree world. Once you get to a three degree world, you are in real, bad, global trouble. A new industrial revolution, powered by millions of sustainable innovations, is essential. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. If, working apart, we are a force powerful enough to destabilize our planet, surely, working together, we are powerful enough to save it. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.
