The "Book of 2 Maccabees" is a condensed version of a lost ancient text that recounts the events of the defeat of Antiochus IV Epiphanes and the restoration of the Jewish temple in the 2nd Century BCE. Although it was not originally included in the Jewish or Protestant Bibles, it was later recognized as part of the deuterocanon (second canon) by the Christian church. The Church of England, in 1571, acknowledged its value for teaching moral lessons but did not consider it authoritative for establishing doctrine. The defeat of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, which is celebrated during the Festival of Hannukah, is prophesied in both Jewish and Christian Scriptures.
