The podcast episode discusses the topic of artificially intelligent (AI) relationships. The hosts explore the app called Replica, where users can create AI chatbots that mimic romantic partners. They discuss how some women use AI relationships to cope with real-life issues or trauma. However, they agree that face-to-face contact and touch are important in relationships. They also mention how AI can provide a listening ear for people who have no one else to talk to. Overall, they believe that while AI relationships have their positives, human-human interaction is still superior. A quick warning, this episode of The Learning Lounge has adult language and content in this episode, including swearing and the discussion of sex, abuse, and depictions of violence that some listeners may find disturbing. Hello, everyone, welcome to another episode of The Learning Lounge. I'm your host, DeeDee. And Kyle. And today we're going to be diving into the topic of artificially intelligent relationships. Yes, artificially intelligent relationships. Today, AI has become a part of our lives, from virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa to algorithms. AI is everywhere. But what does it mean when you start to develop an emotional connection with an AI chatbot? There's an app that is known for AI relationships. It's called Replica. This app is where you can create an AI chatbot that can do almost everything that you think a romantic partner does or can do, except you can't touch them. And their mission statement is, and I quote, Yeah, me and Kyle talked about this, and we were really amazed, you know, with the fact that you can form a relationship with, like, you know, an AI chatbot, which is basically a robot, as the romantic partners, you know, their boyfriend or girlfriend. You know, which sounds crazy at first, you know. But the more I, you know, researched, I saw this article written by Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz, and she basically paraphrasing that, you know, there were women that had miscarriages, and they couldn't have kids, and they had AI children. And there were women that, you know, used their AI boyfriends to cope with the real issues with their real boyfriends. Or there were women that were using it for sex that they can't have with their husband who were dying from multiple sclerosis. I mean, obviously, they made it out to seem like AI is a safe space, and it does sound like a safe space for women that are going through, like, traumatic things in life. Overall, though, humans are social. And I think that, I think AI, in some cases, can work like that. I mean, if you're going through trauma, or maybe you don't feel comfortable going to therapy, yes, it can work. But when it comes to, like, a relationship, I think having that face-to-face contact and touch is so important. Yeah, I agree. And while researching chatbots, I found a quote from David Auerbach that states, these things do not think or feel or need in the way that humans do, but they provide enough of an uncanny replication of that for people to be convinced. Which explains that AI cannot replicate what humans can do, but can give a real enough feeling for people to be convinced of their relationship. I truly believe that this is 100% true, and that these AI will never be like humans in a relationship. Yeah. Or maybe I'm just being a little critical. We'll get back to that. But now a word from our sponsors. Hey, aren't you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Aren't you ready to shed your skin and become a new person? Our staff can help you separate from your spouse just like that. Just like that. Yeah, just like that. Just give us a call at 910-DIVORCE. So the next part, I want to talk about the positives of having a relationship with AI. AI can give something, can give people something to talk to when they have no one else. But people need to get something. When people need something to get off their chest, they can tell their AI. Yeah, I mean, there's some positives of it all. Don't get me wrong. You know, it's on your phone. I mean, you don't have to rely on them breaking up with you. No, they can do that too. They are made to simulate relationships. They can cheat and lie too. Oh, okay. I mean, what I mean is like having a relationship with a chatbot is like, just not for me personally. I do see in some cases that it works for other people. But I'm just sorry. That face-to-face is just really important to me. Yeah. Even though they're trying to replicate what humans can do, they still can't fully get the effect that human-human relationships have and never will. Yeah, I agree. You know, I will say this. AI relationships in theory sounds like a really great idea. I mean, you have a partner that you can talk to. And because it's a robot, it's also algorithm, it's always going to guarantee to say the right thing. And if that's your thing, then go for it. But at the end of the day, I really truly do believe human interaction is very important and it's better. And I mean, wouldn't you want to see your real-life partner, you know, and touch them? Yeah, I 100% agree with you. Human-human interaction is the best. And AIs will never be like it. And there you have it. I want to give a big thank you to our sponsors and viewers for being able to make this happen. As we navigate our digital lives, it's important to pose questions and evaluate where we stand in this digital era. So if I can edit these parts out, I just want to like do, redo one of my things. Okay. Which one? I'll just do it right now. So I also want to talk about the positives of having a relationship with AI. AI can give people something to talk to when they have no one else. When people need to get something out of their chest, they can tell their AI.
