Nothing to say, yet
Joe, a senior in business administration, discusses his college experiences and offers advice. He mentions being involved in golf and music, finding balance between academics and his SoundCloud career, and incorporating yoga and meditation into his daily life. He also talks about his preference for a smaller, structured liberal arts college like Westminster compared to a larger university like University of Michigan. Joe believes that gaining diverse experiences and meeting different people is important for becoming a well-rounded individual. He mentions enjoying an entrepreneurship class and a teaching internship. Overall, he values the lessons and growth he has experienced during his college years. Welcome. Today we're doing the inquiry final part one and I have a guest today and he can introduce himself. My name is Joe. I'm a senior and I'm ready to do this. What's your major Joe? I'm in business administration. All right, any minor? No minor. You play sports? All right, golf. So start us off here. Who taught your inquiry class your freshman year? So I actually started my college career at the University of Michigan and I transferred in after my sophomore year so I didn't take any inquiry classes but I heard good things about them. So moving on then because you won't have a summarator or a lesson that you learned from the class but what activities have you been involved in over the past four years? Over the past four years I've mainly been involved with golf. That's the main reason why I transferred here but I've also been involved in music because I've been creating some of my own music. I have a SoundCloud and hoping to get on Spotify soon but that's those are the two main things that I've done outside of the classroom. So with your SoundCloud career what would you say would you say you've been able to find a balance between participating in this and academics and how have you done this? Yeah I'd say that it started off a little bit rocky because I felt like I was trying to do a little too much working on music and golf and school but I was able to get more structure in my day and I think that just comes with experience you know learning how long it takes to do certain assignments and trying to knock those out before going into other activities. So setting up your day where you can get things done sooner and then it gives you time to do whatever you want later in the day. That's what I'd say. All right very cool. So were you a big fan of Johnny Test growing up? Not really. All right well he has two sisters right and they build inventions. Okay. Johnny Test's sister builds you a time machine. You could go back to when you were first starting college and give yourself one piece of advice. What would that be? I would say just be open to change because back then and still a little bit now I kind of get caught up and oh this is what I should be doing and like it should be done this way. Just kind of allowing things to happen naturally and not trying to force anything. That would be my biggest piece of advice. Yeah. So with that do you regret the major you took? I can't say that I regret it because I still haven't graduated yet and there's still more to learn. But I will say that I kind of wish that I learned something more psychology related because I do a lot of that on my free time. But I can't say I regret it because you know I don't like to look at things with that sort of lens. So maybe you would have taken like a psychology minor? Yeah something like that. I think I think that would have you know it's just something a little bit more engaging for me. So you have a lot of things that you do every day. What is something that you incorporated into your everyday life that you feel has added to your success in college? Definitely yoga with Adrienne. I started doing yoga earlier this year maybe into last year at least routinely. And I think yoga and meditation really helps especially if you do that in the morning. It just helps kind of ground you and get you ready for the day ahead. It's kind of calming especially with Adrienne. She just kind of you know knows how to get you in the right place. It was your birthday a couple days ago. How was that birthday special? That birthday special was was just what I needed. She's perfect. Yeah she's she's a great human being. So throughout your four years of college what would you say a day that stands out the most? A day that stands out the most would be I would say I mean there's a few days but the one that I really remember was at the end of my senior year and I'm a senior my sophomore year. I released my first album on SoundCloud and I had a little album release party with a lot of my friends and fellow classmates and that was a lot of fun. You know just a way to end the year and go into summer and kind of celebrating being done with classes. But then also I would say my first day at Westminster because it was just a really big change and you know it was a it was a cool experience just being in a different environment. Yeah so I know my teacher wanted me to talk to you about the summary and inquiry but I think you're a really good person to just give a different perspective. You're almost even a better person. You've seen both sides of it. You've seen a big state school versus this small private liberal arts school. What would you say is like the biggest differences and which ones did which one did you prefer more? I mean I like I like both of them in different ways. I like the big school at Michigan because with so many students you have a lot of freedom. I would say you learn a little bit more how to manage your time and work independently without guidance from instructors. It's kind of more of a team setting in group in terms of you work with other students to figure out kind of what's going on and how to do assignments and that sort of thing and studying together versus at Westminster there's a little bit more structure and it's similar to high school in my eyes because I went to a bigger high school where there's just smaller classrooms and there's more structure so you know what's going on which is better in some aspects but then also you don't get that sense of independency as much where you need to figure things out on your own. So I can't really say one's better than the other they're just so different. So at a liberal arts college you get a very variety of classes compared to like if you get a degree at the University of Michigan. Would you say that that'll help you in like the real world or do you think that that is something that you prefer? I mean I think getting as many experiences as you can is the best thing to becoming a well-rounded individual you know there are so many things that you could do in the real world like once you actually get a job and you're out there you may be working in a field that's completely different from what you're studying. So just having experiences and meeting different people and taking different classes can be really helpful in that regard but I would say focusing on things outside of the classroom too can be really beneficial. So in your third year as a business administration student are there any classes that you have like what's your favorite class been here so far? Are there any professors that have stood out to you? I like entrepreneurship I'm in that class right now with Gaber and this is my first class I've taken with Gaber but he's got a different style of teaching where it's more it's more of like a conversation that he has with the students as opposed to you know just using a whiteboard and reading off of it sort of thing. It's more interactive so I like that aspect and also there's more group projects so it kind of simulates the real business world a little bit better but yeah that's the class I'm taking right now. I don't like it because I'm struggling to come up with an idea for my final project but you know that's on me. Do some yoga figure it out? Yeah it'll come. So speaking of experiences have you done any internship internships or had any jobs that have been for business administration they like prepare you for the real world? I haven't had an internship specifically for business administration but this last summer I did have an internship with my golf instructor so I helped group lessons with beginners and juniors and I guess it kind of had some business aspects to it but it was mainly focusing on teaching and instruction but that was the first job I've had like that and I really enjoyed it because I learned how to work with people and I think teaching itself really helps with you and helping to understand the material that you're working with better because if you can teach it to somebody then it shows that you have a greater understanding of it so that was a pretty eye-opening experience for me. Yeah for sure teaching is a good way to enforce those ideas that you've learned. So thank you for joining me today we're going to wrap it up here and hope you have a good rest of your day and good Thanksgiving. Thanks Josh you too happy Thanksgiving. Thanks.
