International Female Ride Day by Vicki Gray of Motoress

Vickie Gray, founder of International Female Ride Day, discusses the growth and impact of the event. It has been going on for 18 years and has participants from over 110 countries. The event aims to bring women together and change the perception of women in motorcycling. Gray shares her own journey into motorcycles and her passion for getting more women involved. She also discusses the challenges women face in the industry and the need for equality and representation. Overall, the event has been successful in bringing women riders together and creating a sense of community. Welcome back to Devilish Angel Productions, and today we, I am so excited, we get to visit with Vickie Gray of Motorist and the founder of the International Female Ride Day. Welcome, Vickie. Hi, Chrissy, it's great to be here with you. So, we're from the Pacific Northwest, and this is where Starbucks started, so I always ask my guests, what is your morning beverage? How do you like your coffee? Funny. Must have coffee. I have a Keurig coffee machine. My office is at home, and I, well, I just buy coffee, put it in there, dark roast, with sugar and milk, or soy milk. I'm a vegetarian. That's a tidbit that not everybody's going to know, so thank you for sharing that. Sure. It's been a long time. So, where are you based at? Where are you located right now? In Toronto. So, for those people that are listening, we're going to have a little lag time because we are international call, so bear with us. Good point. All the way up here in Canada. I love it. I love it. So, Vickie, I know you saw my picture of my shirt that I've had since 2010. Unbelievable. What did you call it? You called it historically or historic? Well, it's, I don't know. It's, the one you, the T-shirt you bought, you can see the logo has evolved a little bit. So, those were the early days, and it's a collectible. Sometimes women send in photos of every, they put the T-shirts all over their motorcycle, and they show in, show the T-shirts they've collected, all of them through the years. So, yeah, the T-shirt is a collectible. You have a pretty cool one. I do. So, you started International Female Ride Day in what year again? Remind me. 2007. That was the first one. Okay. So, yeah, so this T-shirt is 2010, and the one thing that I also wanted to thank you that it was the first time I had ever had a bamboo clothing, and I love it. You got me hooked. You got me hooked on bamboo. Yeah, that was great. You know, in those early days, I could handle making my own label and shipping it out, but then Female Ride Day just got too big. So, I use today a third party, you know, that handles everything, and I get a few dollars here and there. It has gotten big. Tell us how big it's gotten, because this is such an accomplishment. I mean, it's fabulous. Yeah, and you know, it's something that still is very necessary, because this will be year 18, like 18 years of this, and everyone says, how many women? I don't know. I need to hire someone to spend weeks, you know, calculating that if you want the real facts, because it's thousands and thousands. So, I tried doing that on an Excel sheet just to kick it off. It's just too time consuming. So, it's over 110 countries. I always round it off to 120. So, let's be clear about that. If there's a woman in Dubai or in Victoria in Australia or Queensland or whatever little town, and she participates, that's considered representation of her region and country. Why not, right? That's a woman from that area. Yeah. So, did you have any idea that it was going to become so, I would say, memorable and tradition for all of us? Did you think that this was going to be as big as it is? Well, I guess I didn't think about the size. I just thought about how important. Oh, that was my dog. I just thought about how important it was, and it didn't need to end until things changed. So, when I asked women to just get out on their bike on that day, you know, I didn't think about a limit to it. I thought, you know, this should really become like Mother's Day. You know, this is the holiday. This is the day. I thought, yes, it should be like a Mother's Day every year. And it has been. It has been. I mean, I know for… I know. It's great. It is, and I have to say that, you know, you've really brought women together. I have been to so many International Female Ride Day events over all of the years from, you know, all the way down to Oregon Seaside. You know, I've met so many women. From the very first ride that I've done, just met some great friends and sisters. So, you have really brought so many people together. Yes, and I think that, you know, women still, because I'm an instructor and I train everyone, men and women, and women will say, well, I can't find anyone to ride with. And I always find that unusual, but usually, too, when you think about it, it's still dominantly male. And women, I did this, too, because quite often women, we have busy lives. Mothers, you know, businesswomen, daughters, you know, caregivers. Usually, the thing that we love to do goes very last on the list. So, on this one day, too, I wanted, because people kept saying, well, you know, it's nice to see more women riding. I said, we've always been there. You just don't see us. So, on this one day, you see us. And it also creates that opportunity for women to connect with other women. And, you know, I've got 18 years of stories. Well, 17, because 18 is coming up. 17 years of stories like yours that are just so heartwarming. You know, when you can find, some women find mentors, good friends, some start clubs on that day. Some have their birthday and it's an annual celebration with their friends. It's just great to see. Really great. Yes. And, you know, we are so grateful for you. You have paved the way for so many female riders. I mean, if you look at your wall of accomplishments as a motorcycle enthusiast, and I'm not saying just the plaque here and the plaque there. I mean, if anybody goes onto your website and sees the list of your accomplishments, I mean, you are fabulous. Thank you. I was so nervous to have this whole interview with you because you are like the rock star to me. You know, I'm like, oh, I didn't count on you. Thank you. Thank you. You know, I have to say, though, you know, it's still hard for me to have even female riders believe. Especially, you know, in the journalistic or magazines, like, they always say, well, you know, really? And I always say, look at it. You know, just look at the postings and the pictures. And, you know, you have to understand, this is a real thing. It's big. So, I still fight. I still fight for us and for women. Oh, my dog. Sorry. It's been a dog day, hasn't it? Because this is our second attempt. I think so. This is our second attempt, everybody. My hound dog was giving us some issues this morning that we have yours on this. It's a dog day, you know? Yeah. But, you know, isn't it? I think he's quiet now. It's like, you know, motorcycles. You know, when you go on a ride, if nothing happens, you know, there's always going to be something that, you know, marks the memory of that ride, you know? Yeah. I often say that if you ride a motorcycle, you always have a story. Oh, that's great. That's absolutely right. It's true, though, isn't it? You can ride just around the corner and have all kinds of experiences. Yeah. But, you know, with regard to, you know, all that I've put in for motorcycling, I was fortunate, you know, to make this original hobby my passion and livelihood. And, you know, I feel like a woman in this world, it's not always equality. You know, we don't get the same equity that men do. And in my career, that has always sort of, well, bothered me. Right. Yeah. I feel, too, that, you know, with Female Ride Day, there was so much room in the dealerships as well. Some of them are doing it, but we're still sort of not seen and still categorized. You know, for example, one year, I made this button up at one of the motorcycle shows I was at. And I think it says I Ride or something, but I always encourage people at the motorcycle shows, when you see a woman, and if she's with her male partner or another woman, whoever, just assume she rides. Start it off, start the hello off with, what do you ride? Or, did you ride in today? You know, and then the woman has the opportunity to say, no, I don't ride, but I'd like to. But, you know, it's changing that stereotype. And the perception that everyone has of women and motorcycling and motorcycling for women. You know, that perception is something that I think, for our part, pretty positive that Female Ride Day has made an impact for change on. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And I agree with you 100%. You know, when I am the same way, when they just assume I don't ride or, you know, I don't know anything about motorcycles or anything like that. You know, and you have been paving the way for years. I mean, how long, when did you really start getting into motorcycles? Like, how old or what year? My age, I'm still keeping a secret, but it's easy to calculate. That's why I gave you the option. Yeah, I'm not coming out of the closet with that one just yet. But I started in the early 80s. Officially, I had been, I grew up in a small town. So I was into horses, barrel racing, you know, things like that. So it, I think it was inevitable. But I, I pursued the course because I had a busy corporate career. I work, work, work, but I love my work. So I don't think it's really work. And then I forced myself each summer to take an outside interest. So one year, it was sailing lessons that didn't work. And the next year, it was a motorcycle course. And that was it. I was hooked. So I, from that point forward, I wanted everything to do with it. I became an instructor a couple years later. And being an instructor, it sort of formed the base of everything that I do today. Because my thing is, is I think motorcycling is the greatest thing you could ever do. And I want everyone on bikes. I love it. Yes, education, education, for sure. And, you know, you brought up, you know, you started out on horses and then went to motorcycles.
