Dante, the host of the channel, announces that he will be adding Ben 10 content to his channel based on a poll he conducted. He explains that he loved Ben 10 as a kid and believes it is a better TV show than recent Marvel and DC shows. He praises Ben 10 for having a simple protagonist and unique world. Dante then discusses the first episode of Ben 10, where Ben discovers the Omnitrix and accidentally starts a forest fire. He also mentions the relationship between Ben and his cousin Gwen and the villain Vilgax. Throughout the summary, Dante adds his own opinions and jokes about the episode. What is up mere mortals, it is I, Dante, the otaku god himself, and today on this channel we're going to be starting something new. I posted a poll asking for reaction videos and it seems like Ben 10 was the most vocal, even getting some comments down below. So outbeating Avatar, I decided to add Ben 10 to my new channel. And I won't complain, I loved Ben 10 growing up as a kid. We got a good protagonist, some fun character designs, traveling around the United States during the summer, some wicked alien designs, some cool villains, fun episodes, and just a great show that I wanted to watch every day after I came home from school at a young age. Ben 10 has certainly stuck around in my life and I am glad that I can actually, you know, actually get to talk about it. Granted, I'm not ink tank, but hey, I am still a Ben 10 fan. And quite honestly, I think Ben 10 is a better TV show than anything that we've gotten from Marvel and DC as of late. Ben 10 himself is a better protagonist because he's simple. Ben's character is pretty simple. He's an average kid who does average things. He's not a brainiac student who got bitten by a radioactive spider. He's not a tech billionaire or just a billionaire who has tons of money in his bank account. He's not a mythical warrior from a different time with magical items. He's just a kid who got a watch from outer space and he can turn into different aliens with different powers. You know, simple. Simple. At a time when the superhero franchise is being beaten down and overused, Ben 10 has always been a refreshing character because the Ben 10 world is different yet similar to what we got and it's the differences that make all the, well, difference. And to see what I mean, we're going to look at episode one of the Ben 10 franchise. The very first one. And then there were 10. So let's get started. We started off our series with an epic space battle. You know, as you do in the sci-fi franchise. A planet that looks, I think it's Saturn. I guess it's a good thing that this battle didn't take place near Uranus. Here we see a small ship trying to escape this gigantic one who, how have they not been taken out by these asteroids at this point? I'm curious. This must be some very quick evasive actions. Who is piloting the ship? It is one of the most iconic villains ever in the franchise and that is the warlord squid face himself, Vilgax, who I'm sorry. I know what's going to be showing up, but I hate this design. He's too scrawny and Vilgax with a mouth is just so weird. And here we meet our titular character, Benjamin Kirby Tennyson. And here Ben is doing what most kids at my age did when it was the end of the school year. We patiently or rather impatiently waited until the bell rang for it's summer. After getting sassed out by his teacher, Ben goes out to see that after being talked out by his teacher, Ben goes out to see that a kid is in trouble from two of his school bullies, which is kind of a douche move. I mean, why would you even do that? It's the last day. Just let the nurse have their dignity and peace. And here we see a key defining characteristic of Ben, despite being an average ten year old who can act selfish at times, he has a good heart and Ben always wants to do right by others. However, Ben isn't entirely the sharpest knife in the drawer. I'm sorry, but when you're that small against two other guys who are much bigger, you're going to lose. And how are you and that other kid not screaming your lungs out? Are you just numb down there because of how many wedgies you've had over the years? You need medical assistance. Saving our failed hero is Grandpa Max, a better parental figure than John Kent and Uncle Ben put together. That's right, I said it, come at me if you will. After plucking Ben out of the apple like a tree. After plucking Ben like an apple out of the tree, he prepares for his summer vacation where he meets a familiar, yet very unfriendly face. This is Gwendolyn Tennyson, his cousin, who is quite the opposite. Gwendolyn can act like a kid her own age, but she's more mature and more intellectual. She's like if Lisa Simpson had a better personality and a better character to sign. You know, it's hard to believe that these two were almost a couple. No, no, no, no, no, no, not like that, not like that, no, not in this, I mean the early drafts, I meant the early drafts, ugh, okay. So yeah, when doing a little bit of research for Ben 10, I did not know that Gwen and Ben were not supposed to be blood related, they were not supposed to be cousins. It is revealed that in the earlier concepts, Gwen was actually supposed to be a classmate. That's right, a close friend and classmate to Ben who tagged along with him and his grandpa for their summer trip. I don't know what the studio was thinking at the time, but I will admit that I am kind of curious, though I'm not entirely on board with what we got, though I am still satisfied with what we got. This was marketed for young kids and young kids wanted a couple of things, action, comedy, and also some familiar bonding. So having Gwen be Ben's cousin would have also allowed that, having Gwen be a classmate and having romance was probably not too keen for the younger demographic, aka the boys who just want to see things go boom. I know that a lot of people have seen some chemistry between Ben and Gwen, you know who you are, and you know that you are gross. But I am glad that the creators of Ben 10 dodged a bullet. I am still curious if there is some sort of alternate timeline where Gwen was, you know, a classmate, not cousin, and they still got interested romantically. If there is some writers out there who do that and not the other option, you know who you're weird, you know who you are, and you are weird. I'll let Quagmire finish me off. Meanwhile, back in space, the little ship is not looking worse. Meanwhile, back in space, Vilgax has the Omnitrix within his grasp, in his grasp, and in a last ditch effort, the small ship decides to give Vilgax what he deserves, a giant laser beam to the face. But before all is lost, the Omnitrix has been sent off. I'm getting some very weird Star Wars vibes, am I the only one who has seen this? Meanwhile, back on Earth, Max is trying to get the whole family to get along, and what better way than with food? Granted not the food that he served, but marshmallows, you can't go wrong with marshmallows, they're so delicious. Sadly, Ben is in a foul mood and just goes off for a walk in the woods by himself. You better hope that Michael Myers is not out there, Ben. Just as Ben is thinking that this is going to be the worst summer ever, things take a turn for the better. It's here, Ben finds, and it's here, that we get to see, my nightma- And it's here, we get to see, my night birthday- And it's here, we get to see, my night dear birthday cake! Nah, I'm just kidding, it's the Omnitrix, and we get to see what an alien watch does what it does. And it just lashed upon his wrist, he bent and- I'm sorry, I love that song. So sticking to his wrist like a parasite, Ben decides to try to get- After sticking to his wrist like an unwanted parasite, Ben tries to get it off, but in doing so, while fiddling around with the watch, he discovers the true purpose, and we get an epic alien transformation. And there he is, folks, the most iconic alien in the Ben 10 franchise, Eight Blast, voiced by Steve freakin' Bloom! I met him at Little Rock a couple of months ago, nice guy, I got him to sign some autographs, and I got a picture with him. He got to hold my axe! He got to hold my Escanor axe, I'm so excited, yay! After turning into the cash cow of the franchise, Ben starts to react like anyone would, freaking out, calming down, and making some quippy puns. It's also here that he discovers that yes, fire is cool, but it also burns things. And Ben starts up a forest fire. I can't say that I wouldn't be in his shoes. I would love practicing my fire blasts, however, I would be too caught up in the excitement to realize that I- specifically- however, I would be too busy in my excitement to realize that I just committed a crime. Meanwhile- wait a minute, Ben didn't walk that far, how did Max or Gwen not hear the satellite crashing? You'd think they would have rushed over before Ben got the Omnitrix, oh well, cartoon. But they realize what's going on, and that Ben has started a forest fire, and thus comes to the rescue. However, Ben and Gwen meet. Honestly, a really good reaction from Gwen, if I saw a molten fireman right in front of me in the middle of a burning forest fire, I probably would have acted the same way. But that I would not have acted the same way Ben did. Dude, that's gotta burn off some toes. Gwen, you need to get to the hospital now. Realizing that it's Ben, they need to find a way to put out the forest fire with heat blasts, and the way to do so is with another forest fire. I don't entirely know how that works, but hey, it's a cartoon, and hey guys, let me know in the comments if that really does work, I'm curious. But the fire poured out, Ben and the family decide to run away from the scene of the crime, as criminals tend to do. Bill Gatts, looking very worse for wears, I mean, he did take a laser beam to the face, so I don't really know what to expect, decides to send out a drone to Gritchy, sends out a drone to retrieve his prize. Meanwhile Ben decides to explain what exactly happened, and fearful that he'll remain a monster forever. Uh, Grandpa, how do you know that it's an alien? This is one of the best key factors of the first season, is that Grandpa Max had a lot more going on than most fans probably would've caught on if they weren't, you know, ten years old and weren't focused on the story. And it's a little bit of nice foreshadowing, all things considered. Fearful that he won't turn into a human again, Ben hears of... Fearful that he won't become human again, Ben hears some noises that will either be joyful or very hurtful. Fearful that he won't... Fearful that he won't be able to turn human again, Ben hears some noise that will either be a blessing or a curse. This is actually a smart move on the creator's part, giving the Omnitrix a time limit. Like a cell phone or any other device, the Omnitrix runs on a battery, and if it goes off, it has to go into recharge mode, meaning that Ben only has one transformation at a single time for a single amount of time. This is smart, because it would mean that you're giving essentially a powerful weapon in the hands of a child, but it does have limits. It doesn't make Ben a Gary Sue or, you know, just incredibly powerful altogether. There's a limit to what he can do, and sometimes the Omnitrix does not like to play fair, which means that Ben has to always go up on his feet and think ahead, which shows that Ben might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he is incredibly smart when he needs to be. Just as Bill has to send his drone to retrieve the Omnitrix by shooting the container, I don't know what the logic was behind that, Ben decides to fiddle with the watch yet again to see how he got it working the first time. While that's going on, Ben is, of course, fiddling with the watch again to see how it works, and it's here that we kind of emphasize the point of Ben. He wants to help people. He wants to help people, but in a way that is actually impactful, not just standing in the way and being more of a nuisance, which is pretty relatable when you're a ten-year-old. You can't really do much, even in a big situation or a small one. You are who you are, and at times, it's just, you know, weak. But it shows that Ben does have a good heart. After figuring out the Omnitrix, after figuring out how the watch works again, we get the second alien of the franchise, and that is Wild Mutt. And two things I want to point out with this. One, the transformation sequence with Ben turning into the aliens is awesome. The team really went into the graphics of what happens when a human turns into an alien. I mean, look at the details with the muscles, the fur growing. Even back with Heat Blast, his body, his skin went from, you know, just human skin to flames and charcoal. The attention to detail in this is awesome. When compared to most other transformations, it's usually just a bright flash of light, and it's simple as that. Here, they hammered in on the details. Second, the creative team really went all out with the alien designs. Not the typical ET, fat, blobby, pale aliens that we are all used to in popular media, or something scarier like a xenophobe, or something scary like a predator or a xenomorph. But here, the aliens are colorful, they're, you know, interesting, and they're incredibly unique. Heat Blast is made of molten fire, and these aliens make you wonder what the heck kind of worlds are out there. What kind of planet has flaming people made of molten rock and fire? And what kind of world has these, uh, dog, gorilla, beast things that Wild Mutt is? I know they're called Voltamancers, but still, what kind of world evolved these creatures? Speaking of, each one of the aliens is unique. Heat Blast can shoot fire, obviously. And Wild Mutt, while he doesn't have anything, you know, too spectacular, he fights like a total beast, heh, pun intended. Even though he can't see, he sees via his sensory glands kind of like the predator, and moves around like, I guess you could compare this to the Jaw Titan from Attack on Titan. Just showing how unique and different these aliens are. While taking Wild Mutt out for a swing, heh, okay, I'll stop with the jokes, Ben runs across one of the mini-drones that the big one had sent out, and shows us all that each alien can indeed kick butt in its own unique way, in this case, fighting like a total wild beast. Again I tell, again Ben would hear a noise that would either be a blessing or a curse, and this time, it's bad timing. But before he can fight the big one, Gwen saves him, and they run away from the scene of the crime, get again, and get scolded out by Max at first for disobeying his orders, but after hearing that Ben just, you know, wants to help people, Max decides, yeah, we'd better let the ten-year-old learn how to control a weapon on his wrists. Again, best grandpa ever. As if the night wasn't full of coincidences already, Max and the gang pick up a radio signal asking for help when Big Daddy Robot is out terrorizing another campsite, and Ben decides to help people, finally acknowledging himself as a superhero, and here we get alien number three, the crystal chandelier warrior himself, Diamond Head. Again, I have to point out to all the cool differences between these aliens. He blasts and controls fire, Wild Mutt acts like a beast, Diamond Head controls, you know, the diamonds that are encompassing his entire body and even the environment around him. Showing off once again that these aliens are awesome. After showing the audience that Ben is indeed smart in his own way, he destroys the robot and thus does a little victory dance. Honestly, I would have done the same thing. Great minds think alike. While Bill Gax is mad that his robot failed to retrieve the Omnitrix, realizing that the greatest weapon of all time is now in the hands of someone else, Ben decides to try out the Omnitrix yet again with the fourth alien, Accelerates. This alien can gotta go fast, gotta go faster, faster. And with that, Ben realizes that this is not going to be the best. And after that, Ben realizes that his summer is just beginning with a whole lot more potential waiting ahead and realizing that there are many things that come with the watch, responsibility and revenge. And that was the first episode of the Ben 10 franchise and then there were 10. This was a great way to start out the franchise. We have the status quo, Ben, Gwen and Max traveling around the United States with Ben acting as a hero whenever it's possible. We get to see who, we get to see what kind of person Ben is, just a regular kid who can't think for himself, but he does have selfless moments. While he's not always the sharpest knife in the drawer, they will always have, he will always have someone who is willing to help him and guide him in the right direction for better and sometimes for worse. These characters are not two dimensional, but they are three dimensional and great. And with that in mind, Ben 10 is on the road for a great summer and we are in for a great story. This has been Dante from the Anime Underworld, thank you so much for, thank you so much for staying until the end. If you like this content, like, share and subscribe and we can get more Ben 10 content on the way. Until then, I'll see you later mortals.
