What we have for you this evening is a wonderful recording from the Clifton Arts Festival. And this was a concert recording from Sean Kane and also featuring with Sean Kane were Pat Coyne and Fergus Feely on the day. So I do hope you enjoy this wonderful concert from the Clifton Arts Festival from September 2023. It's an absolute wonder to have this gentleman back on stage and I really hope you enjoy the performance today with Sean, two other lovely gentlemen, Pat Coyne and Fergus Feely. Good evening all, you're all very welcome, it's great to see you all in the middle of the day as they say and not a child washed in the house. I didn't need the door, I thought I stayed up till the dawn, Banging out the gates and rears, but everyone went on, Singing to those shut-eyes, songs I hadn't sung for years, Nothing like the banding and the beers, Back across the ocean to my home away from home, I'm glad to be returning, what's left of me home. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why, I had long visions, and it revealed that I was a dream, I was loaded down the station, and it cost a decent fee, And I couldn't find my ticket, and I walked out the door, Carrying all my bags down on the floor, Back across the ocean to my home away from home, I'm glad to be returning, what's left of me home. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why, I don't know what I said, I slipped a drink while waiting for to be used, Just trying not to think, I had no idea how I still would feel, There's a bed right behind me, making sure that I won't sleep, And I'd like to vow to find it up above me, Back across the ocean to my home away from home, I'm glad to be returning, what's left of me home. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. I'd like to find a way to be prepared for that one time, But it's easy going back again, but it's hard to say why. Back across the ocean to my home away from home, I'm fast moving on in one thought after more. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I woke up this morning, I sounded very different to what I do now. My snarls was on, clobbered up. Some kind of infection or something, and I came back here, and I met this fella. I said, howdy, Pat, and he said, how are you doing? There's tools in it. They say it must be something that's going around. I'd love to be able to write to Waltons in Dublin and say, I think there's down a few vocal chords there. It's not like you can change the instrument. But we'll bathe away with it and we'll see what happens. Might clear itself out. We'll do a song called If I Needed You. If I needed you, would you come to me? Would you come to me for to me as I say? If you needed me, I would come to you. I would swim in the sea for to meet you say. Oh, the nights are long, and the mornings warm. And the mornings warm in the light of love. And you'd make some rise if you'd close your eyes. And that would break my cold heart in two. If I needed you, would you come to me? Would you come to me for to me as I say? If you needed me, I would come to you. I would swim in the sea for to meet you say. If you needed me, I would come to you. Be with me now. If I showed her how to lay her head in mine. Be with me. She's a sight to see. A treasure for this poor boy to find. If I needed you, would you come to me? Would you come to me for to me as I say? If you needed me, I would come to you. I would swim in the sea for to meet you say. If you needed me, I would come to you. Thank you. Thank you very much indeed, folks. Thank you. Thanks for coming. We're going to do a song. And if we have gyros in the audience, and you want to go gyro, now would be a good time to do it. As I say, the Lord of Mercy and Joe Dolan, it's his gig, there'll be about a thousand people in that space, all undressing at the same time. So it's a bit damp for the undressing, but if you want to go dancing, don't go for it. Well, don't let me limit you. I'm not putting any limits on you. Do what you like. This is a song that went through the Castle Family Household in America. It's a song called, Letting Me Beneath The Willow. My heart is sad and I am lonely All for the only one I love When shall I see her? Oh, no, never Till we meet heaven above So letting me beneath the willow Underneath me will agree But she will know when I am sleeping And perhaps she'll wait for me She told me that she did it all for me How could I believe it all was true? Until the angels all speak with us We will prove what we'll do So letting me beneath the willow Underneath me will agree But she will know when I am sleeping And perhaps she'll wait for me True father was a wedding day Oh, God, oh, God, where can she be? She's out walking with another And no longer cares for me So letting me beneath the willow Underneath me will agree But she will know when I am sleeping And perhaps she'll wait for me My heart is sad and I am lonely All for the only one I love When shall I see her? Oh, no, never Till we meet heaven above So letting me beneath the willow Underneath me will agree But she will know when I am sleeping And perhaps she'll wait for me So letting me beneath the willow Underneath me will agree But she will know when I am sleeping And perhaps she'll wait for me © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Okay, thank you. We're going to continue with a song that was written by a man called Alan Reid. And Alan was a one-time member of a wonderful band from Scotland called the Battlefield Band. A band that we used to come across, or perhaps used to cross, during a lot of festivals around Europe. And it was during one of those festivals that I was sitting down at a session with Alan and he sang a song called The Last Journey Home, which was a song he wrote about a farmer who was coming home from the farm, from the fields, with his horses, for the last time. And he was retiring the horses and the Dixiters, the Ferguson 20, or one of those, had moved into the farmyard and the horses were gone out on grass. And it conjured up beautiful imagery for me. And I said to Alan, God, you know, Alan, I'd love to learn that song. Maybe I'll record it. He says, well, I'll tell you the age, or when it was. He says, I'll put it on a cassette for you. I realised only a few years ago that I was the same age as the cassette. I did, yeah. And that's obsolete. So I don't know where I'm going. Alan said, I'll put it on a tape for you and I'll send it. So he did. But he also put a few other songs and that one got left out. And the song I'm about to sing is one of the songs that he put on that cassette. And it was a complete surprise for me because the song that I said for the minute, I heard it. It's about a couple who were in the city one day and they're huddled under an awning, sheltering from the weather like we're having out there today. And this man opens up the newspaper and he reads an article in the newspaper that says the company he's working for is about to close down. And would be closing down that Christmas and they would all be made redundant. And it angered him because that's the first inclination he had of the jeopardy his life was in. And it angered him and he says to his wife, he says, I'm going to go down to my office on Friday, pick up my last pay packet, we'll get out of the city, get out of the rat race, we'll go to the country and we'll attempt to live an alternative life. And he proposes this to his wife that day and her reply is the title of the song. He says, will you come with me to Ventre? And she says, the pleasure will be mine. If you come with me to Ventre, when he says you come by, I will have a happy time. The pleasure will be mine, she says, the pleasure will be mine. The rain was falling down so hard, the trees were overflowing, you could almost see a flood was coming on. So they hurled him in the corner, five to six feet out of the water, and he told her all the things he had in mind. If you come with me to Ventre, when he says you come by, I will have a happy time. The pleasure will be mine, she says, the pleasure will be mine. The paper says the workforce will be laid off after Christmas, there's a downturn in their business for this day. I've lost it about eight o'clock, on a phone company decision, so on Friday I'll be lifted in my last day. If you come with me to Ventre, when he says you come by, I will have a happy time. The pleasure will be mine, she says, the pleasure will be mine. We can pack our bags and leave this place, and make our road to Ventre, where the country air is the sweetest of red wine. And in summertime come round again, and for the bride, for God alone, we'll find out if my notions are all right. If you come with me to Ventre, when he says you come by, I will have a happy time. The pleasure will be mine, she says, the pleasure will be mine. They walk back and round and round and round, beside an easy river, where the city crowds grow distant in their ears. And the moonbeams on the water blink in silver as they kiss her, and the rumble of the city disappears. If you come with me to Ventre, when he says you come by, I will have a happy time. The pleasure will be mine, she says, the pleasure will be mine. Will be mine. Will be mine. Thank you, thank you very much. Thank you very much. This is a song that comes from that neck of the woods, and it's a beautiful song too, but I like to do it as an instrumental piece. The late great Seamus Begley used to make a lovely job of this, and we'll try and do likewise if we can. It's a tune called The Mountains of Pomeroy. The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy The Mountains of Pomeroy This next song I'll have to do for yourselves. It's a song that I know is in the curriculum, in the school curriculum in America all the time. It's a song called Shenandoah. Shenandoah Oh Shenandoah I vow to see you Some way You're cold and dreadful Oh Shenandoah I vow to see you Away I'm miles away From Hawaii There's only A white man's love And an Indian maiden Away You're cold and dreadful Far away from The stormy water Away I'm miles away From Hawaii There's only A white man's love And an Indian maiden Away I'm miles away From Hawaii Shenandoah Oh Shenandoah I love your daughter Far away You're cold and dreadful Far away from The stormy water Away I'm miles away From Hawaii There's only Oh Shenandoah I vow to leave you Far away You're cold and dreadful Oh Shenandoah I have not forsaken you Away I'm miles away From Hawaii There's only Oh Shenandoah I vow to leave you Far away You're cold and dreadful Far away You're cold and dreadful Thank you! Thank you very much. Okay, alright folks. I think it's about time I introduced you to those two boys here on the stage. They need an introduction from me in Clifton. I don't think so. This man here on my left hand side from over the road down that mountain there I think. That's fine. And if you were to go that mountain and another mountain and another mountain and about another 10 or 15 mountains that way until you got to Belfast that's where this man here is from. Fergus Feeley. I'm just going to go and take myself a little break for a minute. I want to go and blow my nose. But I'm going to leave you in the capable hands of the two lads for a few minutes. And Pat and Fergus. And I think Fergus is going to do a song and I'll see you back in a few minutes. Well thank you very much. And thank you very much Sean for unleashing me upon you. I can see the faces now. I didn't buy into this. I'll be brief. It's an old American folk song. It's an old American folk song. Thank you very much. The first person to go through Ellis Island was a 15 year old girl from the County Cork called Annie Moore. And Annie and her two younger brothers were the first three people to go through Ellis Island and it's a song called Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears written by the great Brendan Graham and do you know the chorus? That's a good start. Isle of Hope On the fourth day of January 1892 They opened Ellis Island And they let the people through And the first to cross the threshold Are the Isle of Hope and Tears With Annie Moore from Ireland Who is all of 50 years Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears But it's not the Isle you left behind And Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pains I will never see again But the Isle of Hope is always on my mind In a little bag she carries All of past history And a dream for the future In the land of liberty And knowledge is a passport When you're no more or disappear But there's no future then in the past When you're 50 years Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears But it's not the Isle you left behind And Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pains I will never see again But the Isle of Hope is always on your mind When the coast of Palestine In 1943 17 million people Had come there to fight to be And in springtime when I came here And I sat down there with fear I thought of how it must have been When you're 50 years Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears But it's not the Isle you left behind And Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pains I will never see again But the Isle of Hope is always on your mind And Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears But it's not the Isle you left behind And Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pains I will never see again But the Isle of Hope is always on your mind And Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears I would like to thank Brendan, a wonderful man And all the team around him that makes bringing us together here today And all over the town for the different geese It's a huge undertaking You would never know it with the way things run so smooth and everything That comes from experience I think But it's wonderful the amount of work that those people do To do something like this, pull off the kiss and that sort of thing I think they deserve a big round of applause Thank you very much And not forgetting the gang at Clifton Community Radio They're always great for supporting the music And thanks a million for your support down through the years Anyway, we're going to finish off with a song It's a song that was written by a band called Lady A Or Lady Antebellum as they were called when I got the song It's a song called Never Alone And I wish it upon you all And until we meet again, good day Thank you so much Not forgetting those two guys on stage with me Where would I be without them? Pat Fine Sergius Feeney Let's hear it for the wonderful Sean Cairns Thanks a million for it And Ian Reid, thanks a million For the Sound of the Life development Thanks a million for it Thank you so much May the angels protect you Properly neglect you And never neglect you When the tides roll home May you always have plenty Just the last pair that they'll see And knowing you've released yourself alone May you keep them from laughing Blind friends from passing With every year passing They're worth more than gold May you win but stay humble Smile more than grumble And knowing you've stumbled You're never alone Never alone Never alone I'll be there to lead Beat out your heart Take you face to the unknown Wherever you find There's even more time I know and follow You'll stay with me And baby you're never alone Never alone When I have to be honest As much as I want it I'm not going to promise That the golden walls of hope In hard times have found you Your fears surround you That light up around you You're never alone Never alone Never alone I'll be there to lead Beat out your heart Take you face to the unknown Wherever you find There's even more time I know and follow You'll stay with me And baby you're never alone Never alone Never alone I'll be there to lead Beat out your heart Take you face to the unknown Wherever you find There's even more time I know and follow You'll stay with me And baby you're never alone Never alone Never alone Never alone Never alone And that concert recorded in the Town Hall in Clifton as part of the Clifton Arts Festival in September 2023.
