MAMMIFERI

After the extinction of the dinosaurs, many other species of animals also became extinct. However, mammals no longer had their main predators and spread across the planet. Different groups of mammals adapted to different environments, leading to increased differentiation and changes over time. Examples include the extinct Indricotherium, a large herbivore similar to a rhinoceros, and the ancestor of horses called Sifrippo. Some mammals lived on land, while others populated the skies or the seas, like the ancestors of bats and whales. Not all of these mammals have survived to the present day, with many becoming extinct, such as the famous and dangerous saber-toothed tiger. Oggi, per la disciplina storia, parleremo della Terra dopo l'estinzione dei dinosauri. Insieme agli dinosauri si estinsero molte altre specie di animali. I mammiferi, però, non ebbero più i loro principali predatori e quindi si diffusero in buona parte del pianeta. Ovviamente, gruppi di mammiferi diversi si adattarono ad ambienti diversi e quindi le specie dei mammiferi si differenziarono nel tempo sempre di più, cambiarono sempre di più. Facciamo qualche esempio. Comparve, per esempio, un mammifero, oggi estinto, che si chiamava Indricoterio, un grande erbivoro molto simile a quello che puoi pensare essere un rinoceronte adesso. Comparve il Sifrippo, l'antenato del cavallo. Molti abitavano sulla terraferma, cioè sul terreno, ma altri popolarono i cieli, come gli antenati dei pipistrelli, oppure i mari, come i cetacei, tra i quali, per esempio, abbiamo le balene. Le balene popolavano i mari accanto a pesci e molluschi. Non tutti questi mammiferi sono giunti sino a noi, molti si sono estinti, come per esempio la famosissima e pericolosa tigre dei denti a sciabola.
