Beach goers not only pollute with plastic but also cause harm to animals and dunes. In 2017, volunteers cleaned up thousands of plastic bags and straws from Florida beaches. These items can injure and kill animals. Trampling on dunes destroys the infrastructure and habitat for wildlife and plants. It's important to take care of beaches and dunes in order to continue enjoying them. Now, unfortunately, beach goers also cause problems by polluting plastic and trampling. Not only is plastic pollution really ugly, but it's also a danger to the animals that call beaches and dunes home. According to the Ocean Conservancy, in 2017, more than 14,000 plastic bags and 26,500 plastic straws were cleaned off Florida beaches by volunteers. These are items that can injure and kill unsuspecting animals. Trampling on dunes by beach goers destroy dune infrastructure and cause them to collapse. This then destabilizes and destroys the habitat that the wildlife and plants are calling home. Fixing these issues is no easy task, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. In order to keep enjoying Florida's beautiful and expansive beaches and dunes, we need to take care of them and give back to them. And here's how we do just that.
