This podcast includes themes and ideas from an interview conducted with Dr. Kubrick, a professor who specializes in podcasting. Enjoy! Welcome back to the EMG 201 podcast. I'm your host for the semester, Clara. I'm Carly. I'm Maddie. And I'm Evan. Today we're going to be talking about podcasting. Popcorn Abby. Okay. Let's start off with, I'm just going to talk about something general. So what is podcasting to kind of get a general idea for our listeners? Yeah. I think podcasting in the most like general sense is like just, I don't know, basically a form of digital audio that you can listen to anywhere, anytime, about pretty much anything. There's like so many topics out there that you can listen to. So yeah, I think that's the gist of it. On any type of platform too, so we have like just some general idea, like Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music I'm sure also has it. Any type of TV shows, you can all find those on what you normally listen to music on. Yeah. And I also think like the beauty of it is that like anyone can really make a podcast. Like you can literally like stand in your pajamas and record a podcast in your dorm room like I'm doing right now. Yeah. But you can really just do it on your phone. You can do it like just basically it's all about convenience anywhere, anytime. Like I said, you know. Okay. So why would you say podcasting is important? I'd say podcasting is important because it gives people a community to be a part of. And there's so many different types of podcasts and there's so many different niche communities that, you know, you people, people wouldn't be able to find, you know, without these platforms and the age of technology that we're in. So I think it's just super interesting that podcasting nowadays has just opened up so many worlds of entertainment for people to be a part of. Yeah, it definitely brings together like a community with a common interest. And it also just kind of is very convenient too as a form of entertainment. And because it's just audio, listening to it is so much easier. And even just making a podcast, I wouldn't say it's easy, but, you know, you really just have to set yourself up in front of a mic and start talking about whatever you want because there's pretty much any topic. If you're just starting out. Yeah. Yeah. And once you build that platform, I feel like some people I know, they talk, oh, it's so stressful and stuff. But... Yeah. But either way, like it's a very important concept. I feel like, I don't know. I'm curious to understand, like, what do you guys find so valuable about podcasting and like what's so important? I just wanted to like, I think it's like important in the sense of like, I don't know, like, I feel like I just keep like emphasizing the convenience of it, but it is like really just so convenient. And it's valuable too. Like, you can find your community, you can find something that you love, that you can always listen to and learn from. You can learn so many things. Yeah. I'd also like to point out that not only is podcasting just important in general, but it is like a specialization of English and it's an area where I feel like people don't really connect it too much to English, but it is a lot of the same idea, especially with like the process of making a podcast is very similar. Yeah. Outline. The process of writing an essay. You have to go through and like come up with your outline and your ideas and then kind of go through that and revise it and then kind of do a draft and record that too and then go ahead and fix, you know, and have a final draft that is what you're proud of, which is basically your essay, but it's just a podcast. I do also think it's like really interesting how podcasting has almost made like English as like a subject, like come full circle. Like if you think about it, like starting off like in like, I don't know, just like the olden days and stuff, like when people didn't really like write down stories, they would like tell them orally, like about constellations and about like Greek gods and goddesses and stuff. And I think it's just like really interesting that podcasting has is so like parallel to that, I guess it's basically like the same thing where you're just kind of listening to a story. So, yeah, creating that own like imagery. I know how even Evan, you were saying that earlier, you get to kind of create your own visual of what's really going on or what the person's saying or feeling. Yeah, definitely. Yes, but not only, though, like I feel like podcasting takes us back to the past and kind of ways that humans communicate with each other, but I feel like it also is like the future of communication in a lot of ways, just because it's, you know, as we said, like it's so convenient and it's something that I feel like everybody kind of has access to. And I feel like that makes it such an important form of media. And to try to really see this in the future, I feel like it's going to be something that's really important. Yeah, I feel like bingeability for podcasting is just so much easier than like sitting down for like hours on end watching a TV show when you could be doing something like so much more productive with your time, like literally anything else, like laundry, like homework, all that. Cleaning. Yeah. While listening to a podcast. While listening to a podcast. You couldn't do that if you were watching a TV, sitting on your couch. No. You can't do that if you're full time, you're listening, visual, you have to sit there. You can't be just take your distractions. Yeah. Which I find. And also I feel like anyone who's struggling maybe and they need to find something that's full auditory to help them learn or do something in school, this is definitely like beneficial and I suggest podcasting. Yeah, I would definitely say it's a lot easier than staring at a textbook. But overall, I'd say that podcasting is definitely very important for a lot of reasons and it's also very, like a good form of media, it's a good way to communicate and to get ideas across and to kind of reach a lot of different people and find a lot of people with the same interests as you. Find your community. That's a really important thing. Yeah. No, I think so. Yeah. Well, it was great. Thanks for everyone listening and joining into our podcast today. All right. I'm your host signing off.
