The hosts discuss their favorite last-second plays in football and the potential retirement of Aaron Rodgers due to his Achilles injury. They also talk about the New York Jets' quarterback situation and the need for a more experienced player to lead the team. Options like Cam Newton and Matt Ryan are mentioned as potential replacements. The hosts emphasize the importance of not wasting the talent on the Jets' roster this season and suggest exploring options like Tom Brady or other retired quarterbacks.
Welcome back everybody to the Broken Clipboard with Nolan and Ashby. We've got a jam-packed show tonight. We're going to have some fun. We're going to hit some topics relating to the NFL, some college football. We're going to have our PBR update, and we're going to have some hockey. Obviously, our segment from the last couple of weeks that we have fallen in love with is our Get Better segment. So, stay tuned for that. But first, we're going to hit off a thought-provoking question of Ashby.
What is your favorite last second or last minute play to win a game? I mean, this is easy for me being a Vikings fan. It's got to be the Minneapolis Miracle. I mean, nothing like, you know, playoff game, win or go home. Case Keenum drops back, throws to Stephon Diggs. The defenders go ahead and take each other out. Stephon Diggs, when he comes down with the ball, all he can see is green grass ahead of him and a nice purple end zone.
He walks right in, and that's got to be the best last second play, in my opinion. Yeah, I mean, that's a good one. I was, I mean, game winner? I mean, you have to throw in, like, the Santana homes from the Super Bowl with the Steelers and the Cardinals. I think it's pretty big. Even the, you know, the Plexico-Burris corner out and the back to the end zone against the 17-0 Patriots. Even in that game, earlier in that game was the David Tyree helmet catch.
You know, it wasn't a game winner, but it definitely was a big reason why they won that game. I don't know, college-wise, I mean, there was a couple years ago, I think it was Miami at Duke, maybe. I mean, they literally had, like, a last second, like, it was a kick return, and they threw the ball six times across the middle of the field. Or, like, pitched it back and forth, and, like, did the old Music City miracle, tossed across and somehow scored on it.
Like, I mean, that was pretty cool. I saw one, and we'll talk about it later on in our NEIA football update, with College of Idaho and Western this last week. Obviously, Carroll had one against St. Thomas this week. But, yeah, so we're going to talk about those ones later on, so I'm not going to get into those ones. But, yeah, I mean, there's some pretty good ones out there. I got another one to throw out for you.
The Auburn field goal return was another good one. That's a pretty good one. I can still hear that in my head, like... Oh, man, that one just gives you goosebumps, especially since that announcer that announced that game has, like, passed away since then. So, like, it's just goosebumps, man. Especially since, like, Alabama was really good that year. So was Auburn, but, like, just you come up short on that, and they return it, and they win the game.
Just goes to show, you can't give up before the final whistle blows. There's always, even if it's just a fraction of a second, doesn't matter if it's a three-point game, six-point game, one-point game, you got to play all 60 minutes. Yeah, exactly. But, talking about 40-point losses, we obviously saw this last week. The Cowboys just absolutely destroyed the Giants. We're not going to talk about the Giants because they fucking suck. We're going to talk about the other team in New York, the Jets.
And some big news that came from out of the Jets from last night was Aaron Rodgers tearing his Achilles. It's a big deal. Yeah, personally, not an Aaron Rodgers fan, but I can't reiterate this enough. I never want to see anybody go down. Injuries suck, and, I mean, hopefully he can get better, he can recover, you know. And he doesn't lose a step. I don't know. Like you said, we never want to see anyone get hurt.
I've seen throughout Twitter today, and, you know, just my own initial thoughts, which I will also get into later in our Get Better segment, sneak peek. You never want to see someone get hurt, but, like, I don't know, could this be the end? Like, it's been rumored that, I mean, maybe that he made it four plays and he's 39 years old. And it's a pretty big injury to come back from. It's one of the worst injuries you essentially can have.
I mean, you can come back from it, but you're never usually the same player. You look throughout almost all sports, like basketball, football, baseball. Like, a lot of guys don't come back to what they were. And as someone who just recently had ankle surgery, that fucking hurts. I can't, and mine was not an Achilles injury, obviously. But, I mean, it hurts. That stuff, I mean, you put so much weight on your feet and stuff like that.
I mean, he's going to feel that even maybe a year past, you know, once he's, you know, cleared to return to everything. I would imagine, I think that this is the end of Aaron Rodgers. I don't think we see him on a football field again, which is crazy to think, since we grew up watching Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, I think that he's charisma. Yeah, I mean, who's to know? Really, that's going to be up to him. I know nothing's set in stone, and we're all learning about everything still.
But Pat McAfee did say earlier, he was like, knowing Aaron Rodgers and knowing what he's about, and the way he talks about football and the way that he is around the team and everything like that, Pat McAfee thinks he's going to be chomping at the bit to come back. And, you know, there is a chance. There is a chance that he does come back. But there's also a chance that, you know, he does end up hanging him up.
And who knows? I could see it go either way, really. Honestly, in my mind, it's probably a 60-40 that he probably retires. But, I mean, like you said, there is definitely a chance he could come back. I just, I don't know. The long road, man, that's all I'm thinking about. Kind of talking about the long road now, the Jets got a long road if they want to make the playoffs. And that involves finding a new fucking quarterback or rolling with Zach Wilson.
What do you have to think about the Jets-QB situation here? Well, like you said, Zach Wilson's up right now. You know, I bet you what they'll do is they'll give Zach Wilson a week or two to see what he can do and see, really, if he learned anything from Aaron Rodgers running with the starters. I know it hasn't been very long, but, you know, even just a few weeks with somebody like that can change your outlook.
But, if not Zach, looking at a list of guys here, you got Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Colin Kaepernick, Carson Wentz, Joe Flacco, Nick Foles, Colt McCoy. None of those guys, to me, are like, they're my playoff caliber, lead me to the promised land guys, you know? And, really, the only ones that I could see come back are maybe Cam Newton. No, he's been out of the league for a few years now. Once you're out, you're out.
Especially with how he plays. Yeah, and then maybe Matt Ryan. He's been out just this offseason. But, those are the two guys that I would see if they had to go and pick somebody up. It might be one of those two guys. But, realistically, I don't know what New York's going to do. I think they have to stick with Zach Wilson and they're just going to have to hope and pray that he was a sponge while Aaron Rodgers was there.
And, when Aaron Rodgers does get back on his feet and ends up maybe being on the sideline and going to practice and everything like that, he's going to have to be a sponge and listen to Aaron Rodgers in the sense that, you know, Aaron Rodgers has been there before. He's been to the big game. He's done it. So, even if it's something like you have to literally move an inch to your left or an inch to your right to get in the right position to make a throw, Aaron Rodgers will be the guy to tell that to Zach.
But, for Zach to do that is a whole other story. Yeah, I mean, I think there's a big thing there. So, I think that he'll still mentor Zach. But, I think Zach Wilson is not supposed to be a starting quarterback in this league. I don't think the Jets can win with him. And, honestly, if I'm a Jet, I'm exhausting every option that I can on the free agent market and or trade market. I'm trying to go find myself a quarterback because, at this point, you're going to waste...
Top to bottom, this Jets team, on paper, looks to be one of the best, most talented teams in the AFC. Now, granted, it's the Jets. They haven't been great since a couple years, probably eight, nine years ago when they had fucking Rex Ryan as the head coach. And, that was when they had the fucking butt fumble. But, they have a really talented team, a team that was a pretty similar make out to what Aaron Rodgers had that year.
I think it was 2010 that he won the Super Bowl over the Steelers. I mean, a top ten defense, good skill position players. If I'm the Jets, I can't waste this season because next season, obviously, you're going to have so many... You're going to have guys that are going to want new deals. You're going to have to get rid of guys. Everybody's a year older. You can't waste this season. And, right now, there's literally no one that they can go to.
And, honestly, if you've looked on Twitter recently, or I don't know, it might be on Insta too. But, I've seen a lot of tweets about how the Jets should go call Tom Brady. Or, like, Jeff Darlington on ESPN said something about it. And, like, that when he decided to hang it up last, Tom Brady was pretty adamant that he's not coming out of retirement. And, this injury, who knows, nobody's asked him since this injury. He hasn't been out in a while.
So, who knows, maybe they try and make a run at Tom Brady. I'd call him any quarterback that's two years removed out of the league. Like, I'd call him fucking Phillip Rivers if I had to. Like, Phillip Rivers has got to be better than Zach Wilson right now, right? I mean, maybe even a Drew Brees. I think that if they want to do what they want to do, I don't think they can do it with Zach Wilson, regardless if he's being mentored by Aaron Rodgers or not.
I was trying to look and see here if there was any quarterbacks that kind of slid onto the practice squad. I know earlier, before the season started, I know Bailey Zappi was, but he got recalled to the 53-man roster. So, he's not available. But, there's really nobody. I mean, at this point, you kind of have to call, like you said, you have to call people that haven't been in the league for a few years. And, realistically, if you want to talk about guys that are probably going to be the most ready, aside from the guys like you said, Phillip Rivers or Tom Brady, it's going to be a Cam Newton, a Matt Ryan, a Colin Kaepernick, Carson Wentz type of player.
Most likely, it's going to be either Carson Wentz or fucking Matt Ryan. I mean, we haven't seen Cam Newton play in the last two years. And, when he was playing, he wasn't very good. Colin Kaepernick's been out of the league for at least five, six years now. So, I think the time the ship has sailed on both of those, I don't think they get back in the league regardless of what happens. Matt Ryan, maybe, but I still wouldn't go after Matt Ryan.
He just hasn't looked anything like he used to. I don't think he can be your dude. Honestly, if they really wanted to do something, they could go get Joe Flacco. I know that's going to burn your fucking heart up, but Joe Flacco was their backup last year. He knows the offense a little bit, but at the same time, Joe Flacco's not going to win you anything anyway. So, I don't know where they go, but we will find out in the near future.
We will stay tuned. This will be a story we probably talk about on multiple, multiple episodes. Like the Jonathan Taylor situation, which we are not going to cover tonight. Unless someone brings it up, which that could definitely happen. But, speaking of quarterbacks, Joe Burrow and the Bengals lost 24-3 to the Browns this past weekend. I am very upset, yet I am remaining very calm, as I am a Bengals fan. But Joe Burrow looked like hot garbage.
He literally just signed the biggest deal in NFL history for a quarterback, and two days later, he was like hot garbage. Like I said, I want to say it was like 14 for 31 passing for 82 yards. The offense looked atrocious. The defense looked alright. But yeah, I don't know. And then they just released Lael Collins, who was on the physical and able to perform list. He is coming back from an ACL injury last year. Played tackle for him pretty much most of last season.
So, I don't know. We will see. The defense played good, though, like I said. Not too worried, though, because I think that the Bengals are one of those teams that don't start fast. And then they kind of like play a couple games, and then they are like, okay, we are going to ramp it up. We are going to like flip the switch now. They have done that the last couple of seasons. They haven't really started that fast.
And they have won double-digit games the last two years before this season. So, I am not too worried. I think they will figure it out. They also play a team that has beaten them 9 of the last 11 times they have played with something like that. So, not too worried. But it kind of sucks to see, you know, you have signed Joe Burrow to that big contract, and the offense looks like trash. Well, I mean, to be fair, you know, talking about big contracts, there was multiple quarterbacks that signed big contracts that looked like crap this weekend.
I mean, look at Daniel Jones. Oh, he sucks. I don't know how he gets that money, but evidently he got it. The reason he got that money was because we were just talking about where the fuck the Jets go. I think the Jets would be more than happy to have Daniel Jones on their roster. I mean, it is what it is. I would like to see the Bengals turn it around, just like my favorite team, the Vikings, who also had a terrible weekend, losing to Baker Mayfield on his third team in the last three years.
I think it is three in the last two. Well, he started for three separate teams in the last three years. So, I think it was two. Well, yeah, he had three and two, but I am just saying, he started. Anyway, the big thing with the Vikings, penalties and turnovers, they can make or break a game, they can make or break the season. The big thing there was Kirk Cousins threw one interception and had two fumbles in the first half.
I was like, dude, what the heck is going on? It didn't look to be the center's fault, they looked like it was Kirk's fault. I know you and I have talked about it previously, but rumor has it that this is a make or break year for Kirk. So, he better clean it up and hopefully we start slow but finish strong, because the Lions came to play in the North. The Lions came to play. There is something I want to throw out there with the Lions, just real quick.
I heard on ESPN that they were saying that the Lions win should be a win with an asterisk. I think that is the biggest load of bullshit. It doesn't matter if Kelsey is not there, Jones doesn't play, because everybody throughout the season is going to deal with injuries and people not playing. It doesn't fucking matter. The Lions came out with their 53-man roster up against the 53-man roster of the Chiefs for that given day, and they won.
Nobody should put an asterisk by the Lions for that game. The Chiefs lost by one. Suck it up, Chiefs fans. It happened. I'm going to go back to what we were talking about before you brought up the asterisk. I'm going to address that. A, I think we're just going to both agree right now that our teams both suck and they're giving up 107 next week. It's what it is. We will talk about those games here in like two seconds.
But the asterisk comment. So B, I don't think you put asterisks on games. You can put asterisks on championships, but you can't really put asterisks on games. This is not a game. A, I don't think that you put an asterisk on this game regardless. I think we agree with that. But man, did the Chiefs did not look good without either of them. I don't care. I listened to First Take the other day and they were talking about how the Chiefs weren't that bad on defense without Chris Jones.
And they definitely talked about the offense of the Chiefs, which I will address here in a second. But I totally disagree with you guys that said this. Honestly, you guys played in the goddamn NFL and you can't realize that Jared Goff sat back there with no pressure whatsoever and fucking diced them up. As someone who has watched the Chiefs a lot in the last two, three seasons because they've played my bangles, when a quarterback has time, the secondary for the Chiefs is not very good.
It gets diced up. It just does. If the quarterback that's playing the Chiefs gives time, he will dice up their secondary. I think it's ridiculous to say that Chris Jones did not have an impact for the Chiefs. Their absence did not have an impact. It did because they had no pressure whatsoever on Jared Goff. And I was literally sitting there watching it in my recliner and I was like, this is horrendous. They're not putting any pressure whatsoever.
It's bad. They need to sign him to a bigger deal than one year, which they just signed yesterday. But in regards to the offense with the Chiefs, I think that we just realized why the Chiefs have been so good for so long. And we've heard the thing about how Tyree Kill, Patrick Holmes is so good. He was good last year without Tyree Kill. Nobody thought he was going to be good without Tyree. And then he played really well last season.
But you think back, like, okay, all these guys that we've said, oh, he might not be as good because he doesn't have this so-and-so player or this so-and-so player or their receivers last year weren't very good. They had some dudes, but they weren't very good. But they might miss Tyree Kill. Well, the one constant in all of that was for all these years, they've had Travis Kelsey. And I think the importance was shown that, especially from last season to this season now, how important Travis Kelsey is to that Chiefs offense.
Because you know that Travis Kelsey is going to catch the ball. You know that, you know, you know that, you know, when it's crunch time, they're going to look for Travis Kelsey, but you still can't stop him. If I'm Patrick Holmes, I'm never throwing another ball to fucking Kadarius Toney ever again. He had four drops. One of them hit off his hands. And if he would have caught it, he would have probably had 15 more yards after the catch.
But it ended up bouncing off his hands and was a pick six. Like, I'm never throwing to Kadarius Toney again. He was two for 12 in the second half because the dudes couldn't catch the ball. I don't know how Patrick Holmes has any faith in his receivers whatsoever. So with that being said, I think Travis Kelsey is a very big part of that offense that makes with that offense. He's the one who makes that offense go.
But also the greatness of Patrick Holmes also leads that offense too. But I agree with you that there should be no asterisks. The Lions won that game fair and square. They looked pretty good. And then that's football. I'm just going to throw this out there. And this is 100% aside from being a Vikings fan or whatever. When are these teams that have built and developed and are starting to become absolute dogs, when are they going to stop being like, oh, we got to put an asterisk here.
Or this other team just messed up and they just came out to play. It's not anything to look at. To be fair, the Chiefs were that team when they first drafted Patrick McCombs and Travis Kelsey. Yeah, but I'm just saying like with the Lions, or I mean, you can even go the Eagles a couple years ago before they got Jalen Hurts. I mean, aside from the 2018 Super Bowl championship and maybe a couple years in between.
Everybody was talking about the Cowboys in that division when the Eagles rebuilt in a couple years. And I mean, the Eagles are a hell of a team. When are we going to stop saying that, oh, just because a team one year was on the bottom doesn't actually make a big leap. Everybody's a professional in the NFL. And I mean, it just goes to the old adage that anybody can beat anybody else on any given day. The other thing too with that is, I agree with that in the case of the Lions that there should be a little bit more respect, especially after they won against the Chiefs.
Granted, it was without those two players, but it don't matter if they're there or not. Because the last, I want to say, they've won nine of their last ten games, the Lions have. I mean, they finished last season on an eight out of nine game win streak, essentially. And then, or won eight of their last nine, come into the season and won their first game against the Chiefs. We were all talking about how coming into the season the Lions will see what they're really made of.
Like, we're going to see. And then they beat the Chiefs and people are like, well, they didn't have Travis Kelce, they didn't have this. But, I mean, they still beat them. I do like that Ryan Clark on first take did say we shouldn't discredit what the Lions have done because they are a very good team. And they have some guys on that team. Absolutely. But moving on, we kind of talked about your Vikings and both the Eagles.
They play on Thursday Night Football this week. Give us a rundown of these Vikings versus Eagles. Are the Eagles going to fuck them up this year again? Who knows? Both of those teams, so honestly, even though the Eagles squeaked out a win, they probably didn't deserve the win. They had a couple bounces that went their way. But... Are you talking about last year's game or this past week? This past week. Okay. No, last year we got the shit kicked out of us.
I wanted to make sure that I was hearing that. We clarified that. Ultimately, the way that I see it is after watching week one of football, it's going to come down to who makes less mistakes. I think. I like footballing your week. Ultimately, I can see it going both ways. I'd like to see the Vikings win, but I definitely don't want to see the Eagles win. I definitely see a situation where the Eagles win, too. I'm just going to throw this out there.
I know the last few years, Thursday night football has been the worst night of football to watch compared to Monday and Sunday night football. But I think Thursday night football is back. I think we're going to have a lot of competition on Thursday nights, and it's going to be entertaining again. We've got to also remember for this game specifically who's playing in it. It's the Vikings and the Eagles. Captain Kirk. Prime team game and not Kirk's friend, man.
It is what it is. But we will see. It should be an interesting game. I'm not a big fan of Thursday night football, I think. But just because I think that it's... You're not getting the best of both teams because they're not allowed two extra, three extra days to game plan for the other team. But that is definitely a different topic, and we're going to keep the show moving on a little bit. We're going to start jumping into some college football.
Man, Deion Sanders in Colorado has done a really good job this season. I know that our last podcast, we talked about both Colorado and Nebraska. I went on a pretty long rant about how I thought, how I loved Matt Ruhle, and I think he's entering on Nebraska last episode. So I will minimize what I say about Nebraska from that standpoint. But they played. Both Deion and Matt Ruhle went head-to-head. Nebraska and Colorado, you've got a lot more to say about this since you watched it, or you were following it, so I'm going to throw it over to you.
So I know I had some, I definitely had some pluses from Nebraska last week. I think this week really showed, ultimately, I like Matt Ruhle, as a coach, and I think he can change the program, but, here's my big but, they need to figure out a quarterback situation, like yesterday. Right now, their number one guy, I'll read you his stats from the last two games. So Jeff Sims, his first week against Minnesota was 11 of 19 for 114, only had one touchdown, but threw three interceptions.
Then, goes to Colorado, 9 of 15 for 106, no touchdowns and an interception. Now, if I pull up stats from his career, he's only thrown 31 touchdowns in his four-year career, has 27 interceptions. We're talking about a dude that, right now, is among the league leaders and active quarterbacks for interceptions thrown, and his consistency really isn't there. And we're watching a guy that, you know, he won the job, because he came from Georgia Tech to Nebraska this season, he won the job, and, I mean, he has two, or no, he has one touchdown pass and four interceptions so far.
That QBR doesn't look very good. Compare him to the guy that he just played against, Shredder Sanders, well, just this week, 31 of 42, 393, two touchdowns, no interceptions, no turnovers. Oh yeah, last week, he also had no interceptions, no turnovers. Not totally. Shador is a class ahead of the guy that's at Nebraska, that's definitely for sure. We're talking Shadorism running for the Heisman, so, I mean, comparably, yes, the Colorado item, ten times advantage on a quarterback that Nebraska did.
So after Jeff Simms seemingly got hurt in the third quarter, he ended up sitting out the rest of the game, didn't look too serious, hopefully it's not serious. They had Harburg and Brock Purdy's little brother, Chubba Purdy, play, Chubba Purdy went 0-1 for his passing attempts, and then Harburg ended up being the main guy. 2-6 for 13 yards, but he did throw for one touchdown. So, ultimately, Nebraska, I think, this season, is, they're going to deal with what they've got going on at quarterback, but they're going to have to find a big recruit to come play for them next year.
That overall game, Colorado ended up winning 36-14. I got the total stats for you, Colorado had 454 total yards, turned the ball over one time and had 23 first downs. Nebraska had 341 in total yards, four turnovers, and only 15 first downs. So, ultimately, Colorado dominated that game. Yes. There's a reason why they won that game, and it was top-to-bottom, everybody that played, very classy, hard-nosed football, and that's what Deion's trying to preach over there. Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, I think last episode, we both talked about, we were both surprised, because when we did the last episode, we didn't know how good Colorado was, and that's when they played TCU.
Obviously, we were doing, we did our podcast during the first quarter of the Colorado game, so we weren't really following along too closely of that TCU game, but we also talked about it on the same podcast, how Nebraska probably isn't going to be, they're probably going to not win more than probably five games this year, I think we said. So, I mean, not saying that, honestly, I didn't expect much from Colorado either this season, but Colorado looks to be a lot better than Nebraska, and I think Colorado, in my opinion, I've been waiting for, I think it's two weeks from now, Bo Nix in Oregon are going to be playing Colorado.
I think that's really going to be Colorado's first test of the season. Nebraska's good, or decent, but they're not in Oregon, and TCU is definitely not in Oregon. So, they have Colorado State this week, which I think they'll win, if they've been beating up on TCU and Nebraska. So, I'm looking forward to that Oregon-Colorado game coming up. I agree, that'll be their first test, but I'm just going to throw this out there, with the whole transfer portal, NIL stuff that's going on, Deion Sanders has used it to his full capabilities, and people are really going to have to accept that that's what it is right now, until there's a new rule that limits the transfer portal, I mean, people are going to move where they want to play, and if Deion Sanders is going to have this type of a program, we could see Colorado be good for a long while.
The transfer portal is a good thing, and also a bad thing for college athletics, just in general. I know we don't want to get into the transfer portal topic too much, but I will say that, like I said, it's good and bad. The good is that, you know, if you're good enough to go play at higher levels, like, you should go play at higher levels. Like, if you're, you know, if you were the starter at, let's say, Carroll College, and you end up at Weber State, and starting there, if you can do that, I mean, that's pretty badass.
I mean, that's a pretty big, decently good-sized jump, and the same goes for, you know, going from, like, you know, Jackson State to Colorado, or Colorado to Alabama, or, you know, Georgia Tech to Alabama, stuff like that. I mean, even Georgia Tech to Nebraska is a pretty decent jump anyway. But, like, it's good for that, because you're constantly giving players chances to get better, constantly giving players chances to, you know, play at, you know, higher levels of competition.
It's also bad because it's not regulated, like it used to be, where you have, you know, you might have to sit out a year, and it really kind of, I guess, discouraged players entering the transfer portal, and kind of just sticking it out, because they had to lose a year of eligibility. I mean, at the end of the day, like, there's probably 2,000-plus kids that are sitting in the transfer portal because they got really bad information from someone that they trust, saying, oh, you're better, but you're not very good, and they're sitting in the transfer portal when they should have just stuck where they were at.
That's the bad thing about it, is that there's such a, it's such, it's such a saturated market right now, the transfer portal is, and it's, you know, it's, unless you're, like, going to be going to, like, an Alabama, you're not really, I mean, if you're good enough to play in Alabama, like, I mean, it's not you, I mean, your options are very limited. But it's a good thing, because it can help you bring in, like, dudes that are ready to play.
Like, if you need a corner, like, you graduated all your corners, and you need a corner that can, you know, has some college experience already, has been in a college weight room, training program, like, that also brings value. There's good, and there's obviously pluses and minuses to it. Like, there's, like, everything in this world. But we're going to kind of keep moving on a little bit. I know we talked about the Nebraska quarterback issue. Do you have any more? Do you want to talk, or do you want to move on to Texas and Alabama? I think we move on to Texas and Alabama.
I think I hit pretty good on the whole Jeff Sims situation. Yeah, okay, so Texas beats Alabama. Man. After last season, I remember, literally, like, last week, I had this conversation with our DC at Carroll, and I was like, man, if Quinn Ewers, I literally said, if Quinn Ewers played last year against Alabama, or was able to finish the game against Alabama, Texas wins that game. Well, he played the entire game, and they fucking won. Yeah, got, Texas had 454 total yards, no turnovers, 23 first downs.
And Alabama had 362, two turnovers, and 18 first downs. So, I mean, really, another dominant game in Texas. You know, one big thing that, you know, I always say when I talk to you, turnovers and penalties, they can make or break a game. You know, Texas... They don't make or break it, they make the game. They make the game. That's literally how you win games. Yeah. I mean, Texas capitalizing, no turnovers, and then, turn it around, they go get two turnovers, they get the ball back from Alabama twice.
That's points on the board, and you're taking points off the board for the other team. So... Yeah, you're giving yourself more possessions, and them less. So, you know, good on Texas. I think... Alabama, still a really good team, but now it's... I think we're going to see a little bit more competition from... I think back to what you're... how we talked about the transfer portal, I think that that has made the... the field rise to where Alabama was at.
Like, you think about it, like... Alabama just can't walk in there and say, hey, you know, we're Alabama, we have this many national championships, come look at our facilities, bada bing, bada boom, they commit on spot, because it's fucking Alabama, you're not from Alabama, I mean, you're... I mean, that's... Essentially, you make... that's... you've made it. But now, like, you can go to Georgia to win, you can... I mean, you go to Colorado, I mean, with all the new developments with transfer portal and NIL, like...
It's essentially brought... you know, made the difference between those top schools and the lower... or the... it's shrunk the gap a little bit with guys that you didn't think would actually be competitive. Yeah. Which is another plus to that stuff, but... I don't know. I don't know how you feel about it, I love Nick Saban. Oh, yeah, 100%. I think Nick Saban's probably... I'm just glad that I've gotten to witness the Nick Saban era. Like, if I was, like, just being born now, and, like...
and I missed that, and, like, didn't grow up on the Nick Saban era, like... I think it'd be a damn shame. I think that if you don't know what Nick Saban was about, like what we were kind of talking about with Aaron Rodgers, one of these... these days, Aaron Rodgers is going to retire. One of these days, Nick Saban's going to retire. It's probably closer than... to Nick Saban retiring than probably... I mean, he's closer to retiring each and every year, probably.
Like, I mean, we're talking maybe 5, 10, 15 more years of Nick Saban, maybe, at the most, in the college ranks. Like, he might retire. Like, he might get fired. Like, but I don't know. I feel like we're seeing a little bit of decline just because of, obviously, issues I talked about earlier. But I don't know. I guess I'm not in the program, but, like, it just doesn't seem like Alabama's Alabama anymore. I would agree. It just seems a little different right now.
But we've kind of beaten that game to death, kind of given our two cents. We're going to move on to our next game from last week that was kind of surprising to me. An unranked Miami team goes and beats a Texas A&M team in a very interesting situation because Texas A&M was ranked. They've also had, I mean, this past offseason, there's been calls for Jimbo Fisher's head, mainly because he's gotten them a bunch of, like, top-five recruiting classes, and they have won absolutely nothing.
They have beaten nobody good. Yet there's this team in Miami who is coached by Mario Cristobal. Cristobal obviously led Oregon to a few good seasons, a Rose Bowl and a bunch of New Year's Six Bowls. Sorry, can't speak right now. And he hasn't really lived up to the hype at Miami. I think this is his third year. But, shit, I'm surprised that Miami won, mainly because I thought Texas A&M was going to be so much better than them.
They're better coached, I felt. And I think they should have better talent, but who knows? Yeah, I mean, I didn't get a chance to watch that game. But definitely a shocker, I think, Miami coming out, playing hard. You know, Texas A&M, no slouch. They're ranked, or they were ranked. And, I mean, when I think of Miami, I think about the history of how they've been a tough team, and they've been a team that's been there before.
So, personally, I don't discount them. But good to see that they're starting to make a little bit of a recovery. And I think they'll be a fun team to watch, regardless of their record at the end of the season. I think they're going to be one of those teams that's due for a lot of close games this year. Yeah, I think they'll stay in a lot of games. I think they're a pretty good team. I honestly was kind of surprised they weren't ranked when I saw this.
But they haven't lost a game yet this season, so I don't know, they'll probably be ranked next week for the coming weeks, if they keep winning. We're going to kind of move on. We've kind of got two segments, and I'm going to combine them into one here a little bit, which is going to be our Big Sky football rundown that we did last podcast. But we're also going to talk about a pretty important game in the Big Sky and FCS realm, which is at MSU versus South Dakota State.
If I was going to say, talk about a ranked game, you had the number one versus the number three team in FCS football. I mean, potential early season national championship preview. I mean, that's how good these two teams are. They have a lot of talent. In fact, the week before this game, Montana State, what? I was going to say, I have it written down. I think this game that we're talking about now is, you're talking about a week two potential national championship game, if not a Final Four game.
I think I see South Dakota State, Montana State, play again come December. Yeah, I mean, I was going to say that these, I mean, these two teams, so last week, Montana State played Utah Tech, who we'll talk about them a little bit later on in this segment. But the head coach for Utah Tech essentially said in his weekly press conference about Montana State, he said, that team is like an FBS team. They are not an FCS team.
They are an FBS style team with FBS level talent. And so is South Dakota State. I mean, you look at these two, you look at North Dakota State, you look at, I mean, teams that are blue bloods in FCS. I mean, they're full and full of guys that could be FBS level players, but they're absolutely falling out on the FCS level. And I mean, I honestly, we talked about the level of play between the top teams in like with Alabama and like the lower teams and how they've kind of caught up.
Like there's a fucking huge gap in FCS. Oh yeah. I mean, it's pretty big. Big gap. Yeah, I mean, it's a pretty big gap. But I'm gonna let you kind of go off on your MSU, South Dakota State game. You watched it more closely than I did. I was getting some work done during the game. So it did come down to the last second, literally. South Dakota State ended up winning. It was 20 to 16. Unfortunately, South Dakota won.
But they're South Dakota State, my bad. Pretty close game though, overall. The Cats had 298 total yards, one turnover and 17 first downs. And the Jackrabbits had 341, one turnover and 20 first downs. So when you're talking about how close that is statistically, those yards do make a difference. But... It was pretty close. Overall, that was a fun game to watch. It was a pretty even, good game overall. I will say, watching the game, Jackrabbits came out the first half and they were a little flat.
If I recall, it was 10-0 at half. The second half came out, third quarter, the Jackrabbits came out and they moved the ball. The Cats fluttered and were like, I don't know what's going on. It took them a whole quarter to get back on base. And then it was... Before a blink of an eye, and it was... It was 14-10 at the end. 13-10. Oh, they did miss the field goal early. Yeah, you're right. But ultimately, that game, that third quarter, switched the momentum tremendously.
But ultimately, it came down to the last couple of plays. The Cats... Unfortunately, they lost Tommy Malott to injury in that game. Sounds like he'll be okay. Yeah, sounds like he's starting this week is what I heard. Which, that's good. Don't want to see anybody hurt. Like we said with Aaron Rodgers, don't ever want to see anybody hurt. But that game might be a little bit different if Tommy Malott's healthy. But, like I said, we're going to just throw this out there.
Definitely a Final Four National Championship type game come later in the season. Yeah. I'm just going to throw my two cents on that second half that I watched in that game. In my opinion, I honestly think that regardless of who was in at quarterback, I think it would look the same. Not the score would be the same, but I think what they got out of Chambers is pretty close to what they could have gotten out of Malott in the way that Chambers late in that game was killing the Jackers.
The Jackrabbits. They couldn't keep him in the pocket. Chambers is a really good quarterback when he's out of the pocket and when the scramble drill is going. He's going to find a dude that's open. He's going to pipe that ball in there and he's going to get you yards. He can also run as well, but he also has a good enough arm that he can do the scramble drill and get you... You can't leave your guys in...
It's kind of a pick your poison position for the defense because Chambers can run, but he can throw the ball. Do I take the coverage or do I let him run and just cover my guy or do I try and make him stop his speed or go for the tackle and leave my guy and potentially get him throwing over the top of me? Both Millot and Chambers are pretty fucking good in respective areas and they're both pretty similar players.
I just don't know if it's much different on what you're going to get out of them. But the one thing that I took away from the second half, I didn't watch the first half, so I don't know if it's a reflection of the entire game or if it was just the second half that I was watching, but I know I texted you at one point. I'm like, uh, let's see. How did I say it? Shitty defense and piss poor tackling or something like that.
I think I texted you in the middle of the second half. I mean, it literally, to me, the only reason that MSU lost that game wasn't because SDSU was so much better than them or better than them. It was a loss because they were not disciplined with their fundamentals and their fundamentals were not on point. I mean, their tackling was shit. You are going to talk about later their penalties. I remember texting you during that game when they had a shot to, you know, essentially score a touchdown to drive before...
Um... Okay, here's the difference. The score was 20 to 16. MSU had the ball at the fucking two-yard line and had a chance to score a touchdown, and they go hard count and do jumps, get the false start. Hey, that's why you never go hard count down in the red zone or inside the 10. That's almost like don't throw it across your body or don't, you know, do this or that kind of rule. It's one of those, like, cardinal sins kind of thing because it's like you're going to get a half a yard versus you're going to lose five, and it's going to put you, you know, it's going to limit you on what you can call, essentially, because there's not a whole lot you can call to get six yards in the red zone.
You have to be fucking really good to get six yards in the red zone, and the way both teams were moving the ball, it was kind of hard to see them getting six yards. I mean, it was a 20 to 16 game, for God's sake. But you think about it. That false start doesn't happen. Fuck, maybe they score a touchdown. It's 20 to 13, and then they have that piss-poor tackling. Like, it's 20-20. That game maybe goes to overtime, or even when they get the ball back, they can kick a field goal instead of having to, you know, try and score a touchdown.
I mean, that 6'9 kicker that MSU has has got a leg on him. He's got a leg on him. I totally agree. I don't think that SDSU was better than Montana State. I just think that they made the less mistakes going down the stretch of the game. I would agree. It was the mistakes. It was the not tackling. It was the penalties. It was blowing your coverage, not watching your guy. You know, it's the little things that, you know, I'm sure the film...
Your day-one fundamentals. I know for a fact that when they watched film on this game this week and they had their team meetings, some coaches were pissed. I'm sure of it. Critical error, critical error, critical error. Like that. I mean, when you're grading... Like when players are getting graded out, they're probably getting critical errors here on these plays. But we'll continue to do some big-guy scores. So... Yeah, so... UC Davis played Oregon State this week and Oregon State won 55-7.
Cal Poly played San Jose State lost 59-3. This was shocking to me, this game. Portland State played Wyoming and Wyoming won 31-17. I thought that was a closer game than it should have been because I thought Wyoming was pretty fucking good. North Dakota played Northern Arizona and North Dakota won 37-22. Northern Colorado lost 42-7 to Incarnate Word. Weber State played Northern Iowa and won 34-17. Idaho went to FBS Nevada and won 33-6. Obviously, we talked about the Montana State game versus San Diego State.
It was 20-16. Idaho State got absolutely trounced. Idaho State against Utah State, it was 78-28. Fresno State played Eastern Washington and Eastern Washington lost 34-31. That was a fucking close game, too. Another shocker. Double overtime. That game went into double overtime. I was really rooting for those that Eastern Washington deemed to win. Montana played Utah Tech and they won 43-13. Sac State beat Texas A&M Commerce 34-6. Any of those games actually kind of shock you? The Eastern Washington-Fresno State game obviously shocked me a little bit.
Two overtimes? That's a good game. I kind of wish that I would have watched it now. The Idaho-Nevada game? Kind of surprising. I mean, FBS-FCS matchup. Normally, you'd think that the FBS team is going to win. Kind of surprised me there. Cal Poly getting absolutely blown out surprised me. I thought they'd put up a little bit more of a fight. I didn't think they would. I think it was pretty normal for me. Everything else doesn't really surprise me.
I think that's about... I was really surprised with how Portland State played against Wyoming. I caught two touchdowns. Portland State's usually not very good, too. That kind of surprised me. Two touchdowns? That's not bad. It's not 59-3 like Cal Poly instead of a state. Honestly, the Cal Poly thing surprised me just a little bit more than the Wyoming game. Just because, you know... To get blown out like that... It's a step past embarrassing, in my opinion.
I mean, if at that point you're going to say Utah State... Okay, I don't know what's worse. Do you give up 28 points to Idaho State or Idaho State gets scored on by the 58? I don't know. I'm going to stop myself before I say something I don't want to say. Kind of moving on to this next week's games. Weber State's playing Utah. I hope my guy, Andrew Carter, plays fucking well in that game. Montana State's playing Stetson.
Idaho is playing... Cal. Utah Tech is playing Northern Arizona. So Utah Tech is essentially playing a base guy schedule now, apparently. Southeast Louisiana is playing Eastern Washington. North American U is playing Portland State. Northern Colorado is playing Washington State. Northern Iowa is playing Idaho State. Sac State is playing Stanford. Lincoln is playing Cal Poly. Ferris State, which is a D2 school... D2 National Champions is playing Montana. And Southern Utah is playing UC Davis. For me, I'm going to keep my eyes on the Weber Utah game just because I have a buddy that plays for Weber.
I'm interested to see how the Stetson-Montana State game goes. I'm interested to see how Lincoln does against Cal Poly. I think Cal Poly should win. I'm also kind of interested to see the Ferris State versus Montana game. I don't know. I feel like that's going to be probably a blowout, but at the same time, Ferris State isn't that bad. How often do you see a D2 team go play in Washington Grizzlies Stadium? That's an interesting one to me.
Lincoln versus Cal Poly, like I was saying, interesting because Lincoln two weeks ago played a school that plays in the Frontier Conference. It's called the College of Idaho. I'm interested to see how Lincoln does. They lost 37-7 to College of Idaho, so that will be an interesting one. I said something about the Stetson-Montana State game. If you know anything about me, I am part of the football team at Carroll College, and the team that we played last week, which we'll get into here in probably 10 or so minutes, was St.
Thomas. St. Thomas played Stetson two weeks ago and took Stetson to overtime and had a bad snap and lost 34-33. I watched the St. Thomas game and preparing for our game against St. Thomas. I absolutely think that Montana State is going to run all over them. I don't think that there is a shadow of a doubt in my brain that they scored 70-plus points. Just thinking about it, the game that kind of catches my eye, I guess the one that I would talk about the most, I think Utah Tech-Northern Arizona will be a good game just because of the two teams that are playing.
Ultimately, I don't think that Northern Arizona is going to be a team to look at come conference play here in a couple weeks, but who knows? They could be the thorn in the side that messes up somebody's schedule at the very end. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. The other one that's kind of interesting is Sac State versus Stanford. The Sacramento State head coach last year was Troy Taylor. Troy Taylor is now the head coach at Stanford.
So, interesting that they're playing this season. I would imagine that there's going to be some emotions for Troy Taylor in that game. But for the most part, I mean, I'm going to keep an eye on most of these games. I hope Eastern Washington wins. But yeah, for the most part, I think there's going to be some decent games. Not anything too big, not really like a number one versus number three game this week, but I mean, there's definitely some possibilities for some exciting games.
Kind of moving on, I'm going to throw it over to Ashby, and he's going to give us a NAA 3HL frontier division kind of introduction and kind of what he's got planned for the segment. So, North American Junior Tier 3 Hockey League here. At least for our podcast, we'll kind of just focus in the frontier. Unless I notice any other games that catch my eye, I do keep an eye on a few other teams. Minnesota, I know the Hattricks are a team over East Coast.
Kind of follow them. New Mexico's got a team that I follow. But as far as the frontier division is concerned, there was only one game, or two games, again, a two-game series in the frontier last week. We saw the Great Falls Americans and the Yellowstone Quake play. Last Friday night, it was 5-4 in favor of Great Falls, and then Saturday, 5-3 in favor of Great Falls. So far, Great Falls, obviously, the number one team, but nobody else has played.
And then, obviously, Yellowstone, the worst team. Again, they're the only teams that played. Just a quick rundown for teams that are in the frontier. We have Great Falls Americans, Badlands Savers, Bozeman Ice Dogs, Gillette, Wild, Butte just changed their name. They were the Butte Cobras. Now they are the Butte Irish. The Helena Bighorns, the Sheridan Hawks, and the Yellowstone Quake. Upcoming games this next Friday and Saturday night, Helena will travel to Cody, Wyoming, to play the Yellowstone Quake.
Gillette will come up and play Butte, and then Sheridan will come to where I'm at in Bozeman and play the Ice Dogs, and that'll be both Friday and Saturday night. The way that I see things shaking up, I think the Bighorns win two games, I think Gillette wins two games, and I think the Ice Dogs and the Hawks split. I think it's one and one. After the very first week. Badlands have the weekend off, so they will not, they'll be the only team that will play this weekend.
And then Great Falls has the weekend off because they played last week. Badlands will kick off their season on the 22nd and 23rd, hosting the Ice Dogs. And that's, that's all I have for now. Sweet, yeah. Some great hockey will be played in those games. Kind of moving on to our PBR update for the night, we normally do. So, how are we looking on the PBR front, Ashby? So I know it's been, there's been probably three events since we last played, so I'm kind of looking forward to that.
I'm looking forward to that. So I know it's been, there's been probably three events since we last touched base, or two events now. No winless teams, no undefeated teams. So, right now we have Austin in first, sitting with a 13 and three record. Then we have Kansas City at nine and seven, tied with Oklahoma at nine and seven. Texas is at eight and eight. Carolina, seven and nine. Arizona, seven and nine. The reigning champions in Nashville, five and 11.
And then last but not least, Missouri at four and 12. Our next event will be this weekend. Missouri will host Thunder Days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sweet. Some tough men, tough people play that sport, man. It's not for the faint of heart. That's for damn sure. We're gonna move on to kind of our, one of our last big segments, the last probably big segment that we have. We're gonna talk about something near and dear to my heart, NAIA football.
I'm gonna kind of give us a little rundown of what happened in the last, I guess this last weekend. So, this past weekend, the newcomer to the Frontier Conference, Arizona Christian won 49 to 25 over Fort Lewis College. Rocky Mountain College had a bye. Tech won 37 to 29 over Dallas. Tech won 37 to 29 over Division II Central Washington. Northern had a scrimmage against Pacific Northwest. And so that was their JC in the Tri-Cities. Shout out to Jay.
Yeah, Jay. You'll like to hear that one. I do not know the score, because it was a scrimmage. But that was played. Eastern Oregon played Whitworth, and the score was 42 to 28 in favor of Whitworth. Kind of an interesting, kind of ending to a game. College of Idaho won 37 to 35 over Montana Western. College of Idaho was down 31 to 35 with like five seconds or so left. And their quarterback, Andy Peters, scrambled out and threw up a Hail Mary.
It's kind of one of those things you see in every game with a Hail Mary, that there's a bunch of guys that go up for it, it gets tipped, and it got batted forward, and the receiver for College of Idaho caught it and literally toe-tapped the back of the end zone, and they won 37 to 35 on a Hail Mary. So that was an interesting play to see. And then the last game of the weekend was my guys Carroll College playing St.
Thomas coming into this game. Carroll College was ranked 15th in the country. St. Thomas was 14th. We talked about penalties killing the Bobcats earlier. The penalties really helped Carroll win this game at the end. If you watch this stream, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about, which we won't get into that. But yes, Carroll College won 26 to 23. The rankings came out on the 14th and the rankings came out yesterday. Carroll College moved up five spots to number 10.
College of Idaho moved up four spots to number eight. Montana Tech stayed at 16. And then Rocky, Western, and Arizona Christian were all receiving votes. So then for this next weekend, Eastern Oregon will travel to Butte, America, to take on Tech. Lewis and Clark College in Oregon is gonna take, will be at Montana Western. Will Lammett will travel to SOU, which is Southern Oregon. Montana State Northern will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, or Glendale, Arizona. Glendale, Arizona.
Sorry for everyone that listens in Arizona. And College of Idaho will apply. And then a, us at Carroll College will travel to Billings to go take on Rocky. Some pretty big games in there. So yeah, exciting for a few teams that are playing their conference opener. Other teams playing some non-conference games. Should be a fun one this week. All right, you have anything you wanna add to that, Ashby? Not really. I just know that Carroll-Rocky this weekend will be a fun game to watch.
I know I'm gonna watch that. And then I'll be interested to see how that Arizona game shakes out too. Yeah. A couple years ago, Arizona Christian actually ended up losing to Northern, I wanna say four or five years ago. Northern went down to Glendale and won. So yeah, that should be an interesting game. It'll be Arizona Christian's very first Frontier Conference game. Well, good luck to everybody this weekend. It'll be fun. Yeah, sure. It's a tough conference.
It's getting tougher and tougher by the year, it seems. So yeah, kind of moving on though. If you haven't listened to us before, in previous episodes, we were giving a rundown on Division I college football and we had Jay from PNW Sport on. And the theme of the thing was, we just started seeing teams that sucked, needed to get better. And it led to our Get Better segment. So I'm gonna lead it off here. We talked about Aaron Rodgers earlier.
I talked about a few weeks ago, that offensive line needed to get better. Well, God damn it, they got worse. Holy fuck. Honestly, Aaron Rodgers gets sacked and tears his Achilles on the fourth play of the game last night. Man, you're supposed to protect that guy back there. Honestly, you gotta get better. Regardless of who the quarterback is back there, you cannot let your quarterback get hit regardless. Because that will impact your season. That's a forewarning for anybody that plays on the offensive line.
You are on notice to protect your quarterback. So please, offensive lines, get better. Not worse. Just throwing this out there, as a Vikings fan, and as Nolan's a Bengals fan, we've had that happen. We've had our offensive lines need to get better. Ultimately, I know I can speak for the Bengals, but I can't speak for the Vikings. Offensive line looks quite a bit better than it did, especially Joe Burrow's first year. Oh, yes. The other thing, for people who don't know, I'm a former offensive lineman.
Ashley played offensive line when he played. I'm all about the offensive line. I'm going to get fired up just talking about offensive line play. If you are a shitty offensive line, I will fucking find you. There's nothing more that pisses me off than shitty offensive line play. So, moving on to Ashby's, get better. Well, I mean, depending on who you are, sometimes offensive linemen, this is on you. I'm not an offensive lineman. You suck. Sometimes it's on the defense, but penalties and turnovers, I cannot stress it enough.
Penalties and turnovers kill teams. It doesn't matter what division. It doesn't matter if it's Pee Wees, high school, middle school, college, NAIA, FBS, FCS, NFL, CFL, you guys got to watch what you're doing. Don't turn the ball over. And my get better segment of this week is turnovers and penalties. The players that commit them. Get better. What do you think of that Chiefs offensive lineman that fucking starts, like, it's ten yards in the backfield it looks like, and then starts like five seconds earlier than everybody else? Huh.
There's a fine line, a fine line of what you can and cannot do. I will say, if you're going to get away with it, the other tackle better fucking do it as well, and he does. So, let's just say, it's not as bad as people say it is, because the other tackle does it too. But yes, offensive penalties kill, and yes, turnovers fuck you over. It is, the two things that make my hair go gray. And if you don't know me, I have some nice luscious red hair like Andy Dalton, or Cooper Rush, and or Carson Wentz.
And or Carson Wentz. I am not going to go up on the spot yet though. It might like to keep happening if this offensive line play doesn't fucking get better here, guys. Like, I'm not, now get out. It's bad, guys. You gotta get better. Please, get effing better. I don't know what to say. All I can do over here is just sit here and giggle, because it's literally offense and defense both on the line and even off the line.
But ultimately, it's pretty much the same thing. We just need everybody to get better and play clean football, because that's the best type of football to watch. Disciplined football is the best football. I don't care what anyone else says. I ain't about the drip. I'm about moving another man against his will. So, with that being said, I'm going to move this show right along. And we are going to wrap up for the night.
