Radio Maria is a Christian radio station that presents an encore presentation about Marian apparitions. The focus is on Medjugorje, where the Queen of Peace allegedly appears. Although Medjugorje hasn't been officially approved, there have been positive findings about the authenticity of the apparitions. Many people have gone to Medjugorje and experienced conversion and peace. Our Blessed Mother calls for prayer and unity with her. The village has changed over the years due to the increasing number of pilgrims. The apparitions started in 1981 when six young people saw the Blessed Mother on Apparition Hill. They were initially scared and ran away, but later went back and experienced a mystical encounter. The visionaries were drawn towards the Madonna and prayed with her. The apparition assured one of the girls that her deceased mother was happy and asked her to take care of her grandmother. I can't ever thank you enough for all the encouragement that you send to us and just the way that you support us, not just monetarily, but with all your prayers and your sufferings. We know that and we depend on that because the fruits of that are just everywhere. Today I'm going to talk about the Queen of Peace, talking about fruits everywhere. When she appears in Medjugorje, she made known that her title there is Queen of Peace. This is the second week of Advent. We are talking about peace and we're focused on it. Well, who better to tell us what peace is and how to achieve it and to teach us every day how to live the peace of Christ. Today's gospel is about from Matthew telling us, you know, Jesus saying, my burden is light and to come with him and he will help us to attain that peace because he is the Prince of Peace. And so what does that mean? And let's see how our Blessed Mother reveals that in her very presence for over four decades over at Medjugorje, where she has been allegedly appearing. Now, we all know that Medjugorje has not been officially approved. I've talked about that several times here. But that being said, it has had some findings of an international commission of inquiry of the Holy See for Medjugorje and that was Pope Benedict XVI. He entrusted that commission of inquiry to Cardinal Ruini and it gave a very positive opinion of the authenticity of the first 10 days of apparitions from June 24th to July 3rd in 1981. And the ban on people going there and parishes and clergy accompanying their people to Medjugorje has been lifted. And so you will see when you go over there, and I hope that you will if you get the chance, if you make the chance, I should say, because nothing happens unless you want it to and you work for it, right? And then the Blessed Mother helps. And in the end, she says, even though there may have been very many difficulties, in the end, when you look back, you will see that after all, it was very easy. She's here helping us. She is the Queen of Peace. She is our mother. She wants us to know and love her son, who is the Prince of Peace. And so many people who have gone to Medjugorje, including myself, pretty much just say, go and you will believe. So if you have doubts or you think that Medjugorje is not for you, I think you will be very surprised because in the world where our Blessed Mother chooses to appear, there are special graces given that part of the world or that particular site. For instance, Lourdes with the healing water. That is a particular grace of healing in a very specific manifestation at Lourdes. And then you go to Fatima, and that is all about faith. And so that has so much with it. And those are approved apparitions. And so in Medjugorje, we find conversion. Because, my friends, that grace of conversion is what leads us to peace. Peace in our hearts, peace in our families, peace in our cities, peace in our country and in the world. Our Blessed Mother came and said, I am the Blessed Virgin Mary. I chose this place because there are many deep believers here. Unite with me in prayer. So our Blessed Mother, she is all about prayer. What did she do when Bernadette encountered her? Our Blessed Mother picked up her rosary and started to pray the rosary with her. What about Fatima? She is called the Queen of the Rosary there, right? And so she is all about prayer. She always brings us back to prayer. And why does she do that? Well, when we encounter prayer on a deeper and deeper level, we go in deeper to the heart of Jesus and Mary. And when we are in the middle of the two hearts of Jesus and Mary, there intersects the supernatural world where peace abounds everywhere. It is the Kingdom of God. And so that is why she talks about the triumph of her Immaculate Heart. The triumph is that we all love and come to recognize the Prince of Peace, the King Himself, Christ the King, her Son. And so that is what she is trying to do. And she picks Medjugorje because there are many deep believers here. Do you remember when Jesus could do very little miracles when he went back to Nazareth and they wanted to know, is this really you? Are you really doing this? Because we know you. We saw you grow up in our village. And he said, suddenly he could do few miracles there because people did not believe. They were skeptical. Well, my friends, the world is full of beyond being skeptical about everything. Everything is prove it to me, prove it to me. And even when you get solid evidence, it still is not proof enough. So, you know, people do not want to believe anymore. And you have to ask yourself, why is that? Well, the reason I believe is because people want to live as they want to live. That means by their own rules, by their own truths. And when you have God in the picture, then you have to acknowledge that he is our creator and we are mere mortals. And we need to do as he has outlined for us, like through the Ten Commandments, obeying those and the precepts of the church and being involved in the sacraments and going to Holy Mass as often as we can. All of those things help to draw us closer to God. And the closer we are to God, the more the truth is apparent to us, what is good and what is bad. And unfortunately, what we find is that many of the things that the world says is good for you and will make you happy is a lie, a complete lie. And so when we get closer to Jesus, we start getting rid of material things. We start giving things to others who are in need. We see things that we never saw before because our eyes are open and we see Jesus in the world, just as Mother Teresa saw Jesus in each person she encountered, whether they were a head of state or they were somebody who was dying on the ground in front of her. These are the things that happen when we are people of deep prayer and believers. And so our Blessed Mother has picked a village called Medjugorje, and she chooses it because there are so many that are deep believers there and are living their faith, and she needs them to unite with her in prayer. So she's calling for prayer warriors. We don't have to live in Medjugorje. Are we deep believers who can unite with our Blessed Mother in prayer? That's what she asked in Fatima. And she said that if we would convert, repent, and turn back to God and be with him in prayer, then the Second World War wouldn't need to happen. And sadly, that did not happen. Not enough people united with her in prayer. And so some things probably were averted because many did take up their rosaries. But after a while, you start to maybe live it a little less, the messages. And now after 40 years, sometimes people who were very fervent and took the messages of our Blessed Mother in Medjugorje to heart, well, many of them have fallen away because it's been so long. But it's a blink of the eye, my friend. I have some kids now. My oldest is 31, and I can still remember the day he was born. And I thought at the time when people said, oh, time goes so fast. I thought, right, right. It's like, you know, forever some days with all the kids. But it is. It goes fast. A blink of an eye. Just a speck in eternity. And so we have to use this time that we've been given here on earth to draw people to Christ, to draw them to our Blessed Mother who could help them to convert their hearts. You know, a mother has a way of touching our hearts as no one else. And our Blessed Mother, she is the queen of all hearts. She is the queen of heaven and earth. And she's got angels to help her. And yet she comes to Medjugorje, and she is looking for people to unite with her in prayer. So us lowly mortals, way lower than all the angels, the magnificent angels, the nine choirs. And what is she requiring? She needs our help. She needs our prayer. She needs us to believe. And to turn that belief into the kingdom of God. So Medjugorje, if you've never been there, it's changed a lot over the 40 years because more and more people are coming. When I first went there, I've been there 13 times leading different groups. And when I first went there, you know, you went through the fields and there were rocks where there's now concrete. There's no place to stay unless you stayed with the villagers in their homes that they've turned into little hostels. And so everything was very meager. Everything was very crude. You know, my room that I had basically consisted of a small room with two little beds in it and a bare light bulb in the middle of the room. And that was it besides the crucifix. And so meek, humble, good hearted people who invited us into their home. And when you went, you know, you walked everywhere and it was you could see the sheep as they went through the streets. You could hear the roosters crowing in the morning. It was very much the rural community. And now there are big hotels and there are all kinds of everything's paved. And why? Because so many people are flocking to Medjugorje still after all these years. Why? Well, go and find out for yourself and you will believe as many devotees say of Medjugorje. It's a unique atmosphere. It's hard to describe. It's as if you know everybody right away. Everybody greets each other in the streets, even in the shops when you're shopping for holy reminders, rosaries and all kinds of other statues and things like that. Beautiful reminders to bring home. When 12 o'clock strikes or 6 o'clock strikes, everybody stops in that shop and prays the Angelus just like in the old days. When we brought a group of young people over, they said, it's so easy to pray here and I want to pray. That is the grace given. Prayer and wanting to pray is the key, my friends. And to have that grace, especially as a young person who's very distracted by phones and everything else. Well, that is a great blessing and a great gift because when they come home, they realize how starkly different it is and how they long for that peace and that simplicity of life. And so Medjugorje is a beautiful little village. Even though it's growing up, it means that more and more people are coming. So, of course, they need to be taking care of all the pilgrimages. It's flanked by two hills. They call them hills, but they're really mountains. One is the Apparition Hill and the other is Cross Mountain. The Adriatic Sea is less than 50 miles away. It's beautiful. Croatia is known as one of the most beautiful spots on earth and it truly is. But that isn't the reason why our Blessed Mother chose six visionaries to appear to her. And they weren't always the best believers. In fact, our Lady has told other believers or other seers, she said, why did you pick me? And she said, I do not always choose the best, but she chooses you for a reason. And so our Blessed Mother, who knows everything, she chose six young people to appear to. And this is one of the things that happened. And if you don't know the story of Medjugorje, I'm just going to hit some of the things that kind of help put it in context so that you can kind of see the signs of the time. And when you're in the middle of it, sometimes you don't realize it's a sign of the time. And sometimes it's such a drastic thing that you do. So this happened on June 23rd, 1981. This was the afternoon before Our Lady appeared. In that late afternoon of June 23rd, the people of Medjugorje cried, it is as if the day of judgment has come to us. A terrible storm had broken out. Thunder boomed from the sky and echoed between the two hills. Fires broke out and raged. The local post office burned down. The following day after was the feast of St. John the Baptist, and it was a hot one. Viska was napping after her morning math exam. Two friends were headed to see her, Ivanka and Mariana. Throughout the school year, they attended school out of town. During vacation, they came to the countryside to visit their grandparents. Ivanka's mother had died a month earlier, and her father worked in Germany. She was very lonely. Suddenly, Ivanka cried, look, the Holy Mother is there. She later described a figure dressed in a gray robe moving on Apparition Hill. Frightened, they ran to the nearest hall. That of Maria and Milka Pavlovich. After some time, Ivanka and Mariana decided to accompany Milka as she went to fetch sheep from the pastor. So at first, they didn't believe that Ivanka had seen anything, and they thought she was just imagining things. But once they reached a spot from where the Apparition Hill could be seen, Ivanka looked up at the hill again. I saw the Madonna with Jesus in her arms. Then Mariana and Milka also looked in this direction and saw her too. So just like in Fatima, it reminds me how, you know, at first, Lucia was the only one who could see our Blessed Mother. And then Jacinta could. And then, of course, Francisco had to pray very hard for his eyes, so to speak, to be open to see the supernatural, which was our Blessed Mother appearing right before him. So Milka quickly left for her herd, while the older girl, terrified, ran to Viska's house. So you think maybe they would run towards the Apparition because they recognized that it was the Blessed Mother with Jesus in her arms. But they ran because they were terrified. Because their friend was asleep, they conveyed a request to her mother. As soon as she wakes up, let her come to Yaakov's house. Maria was the cousin of 10-year-old Yaakov, and she knew that his house had a perfect view of the hill. If there was something on top of it, it would be clearly seen from there. So they're still at a distance trying to figure out what is going on and if what they're seeing is really true. When Viska arrived at Yaakov's house, she was scared and did not think to look out the window toward Apparition Hill. Instead, she ran away. She only stopped when she bumped into 16-year-old Ivan and 22-year-old Ivan Ivankovich. The boys agreed to come closer to the hill with her. Suddenly, Ivan looked at Apparition Hill and fled in a panic. Viska, without looking up, asked the other Ivan if he saw anything. I see something white turning, he replied. Then the girl looked up at the hill. The Holy Mother, they say, stood 200 yards away. I saw her as I see you, Viska later said. She wore a gray dress and a white veil and a crown of stars on her head. Her eyes were blue, her hair was dark, and her cheeks were pink. In her hands, she was holding something which was covered and uncovered, but I couldn't see what it was. She started calling us to herself, but who would have thought to come closer? So, in other words, she was very, very afraid, even though she knew it was the Mother of God. And I'm sure she, as a very faithful village and family, that they spent many times praying the rosary and interceding for our Blessed Mother to answer their prayers. And here she is, and what do they do? They run away. They're terrified. That's like in the Bible, you always hear, be not afraid. As soon as an angel or somebody appears, be not afraid. Have peace. But easier said than done when you're faced with that situation. The experience these children describe is known to theologians as a mystical experience, and they were involved in a mystery that was both fearful and fascinating. So, basically, you're fascinated, but you're frozen with terror because, well, it's the Mother of God. And so, what do you do? What do you say to her? How do you act? So, they just fled. I remember Yvonne telling his story one time, and he said when he ran back to his house and he just locked the doors and went into his room, and he just was terrified. He was hiding in the corner because he was afraid that maybe the apparition would come and be in the room with him. And he said he was just terrified. He wasn't thinking anything. He was just reacting. So, there's that fear and flight kicking in. So, the first meeting, which has been actually given a positive opinion on the authenticity of the International Commission of Inquiry, that this is what happened that first meeting. The next day, Ivanka, Mariana, Viska, and Yvonne decided to take a closer look at the site of the apparition. They hoped to meet the Immaculate. Not all of them felt the same way, though. They never saw, and several did not go with them, and they never saw the Holy Mother again. So, once again, do we believe and do we act on that belief? Do we search or do we just run away or decide not to go back? You know, when things happen, sometimes we're given great graces by God. Maybe not to see the Blessed Mother, of course, but we were given many great, fascinating, wonderful things, and instead of saying, you know, driving us closer to God to pray more, to go to Mass, to convert, and to repent, sometimes we run the other way, or we just say, oh, wow, that was really cool, and nothing else happens from that. Many, many people experience a lot of mystical experiences, and they either write it off, or even if they believe it, it doesn't affect their life. And yet, that's exactly why mystical things happen to people, so that the unseen world all around us is exposed, that we know the reality of that unseen world to help our belief, to help us to have the faith, the hope, and the love that we need to get through this world, and to bring others to Christ, too. So, once again, Ivanka noticed the Holy Mother first, then the three others, Viska, Kladu, Jokov, and Maria. When the Madonna started summoning the visionaries, they rushed up the hill. We ran as if we had wings over sharp stones and brambles. Remember, there was no path then. It was just, you know, a lot of brush with a lot of deep thorns, and it was just, you know, huge rocks and boulders, and it was, if it was a clear path, they just, those that saw them running couldn't believe how fast they were able to run. Several adults saw them run and couldn't understand what was happening. To get to the top, you need at least 12 minutes, Mariana's uncle later said, and they got up there in two minutes. I was scared to death, and Viska said, we were running toward the Madonna as if something were pulling us. I was afraid. I was barefoot, but the thorns didn't hurt me. When we got close to her, something knocked us to our knees. Yaakov was kneeling in the middle of a thorn bush, and I was sure he would be injured. He didn't have the slightest scratch. We started to pray. So what a mystical experience that they had right there, and it shows you that sometimes we talk ourselves out of things. You know, if they had had time to think instead of being mystically pulled towards our Blessed Mother, they might have said, well, that's impossible. We can't go up there. I don't have, you know, I'm barefoot. The practicalities and the excuses rather than believing, and then the miracle of not being hurt, not injured, no thorns, not even a scratch. All those things help to validate those claims that are being made by others. The same thing happened in Garibaldi and was actually recorded many, many times on film and pictures, you know, mystical things happening that would be impossible for the girls to experience unless it were a divine intervention. And so the Holy Mother, they said, was standing right in front of them. She was beautiful. She was surrounded by light. And then Ivanka asked about her mother who had just died. The Mother of God assured her that she was happy. Since the woman died alone in the hospital, the girl asked if she wanted to pass a message on to her children. Only that you are to listen to your grandma. That's what Mary reportedly said. You are to take care of her because she is old and unable to work. So once again, drawing everybody back to the family and the need to care for one another, no matter if you're young or you're old, all working together to keep that family going and growing in God. So the vision, it lasted about a quarter of an hour. Mary did not deliver any other significant messages. Several men who followed the children up the mountain witnessed the final moments of the apparition. From that moment, the apparitions in Medjugorje became public. So once this happened, word spread very, very quickly, not only in Medjugorje, but throughout all the small towns that were all around. And people believed and they came to see. But many of them, as I talked to them over the years, when I've run into them, many of them believed without ever doubting. They said they just knew in their heart that it was our blessed mother and that she needed them and that they needed her. And that's why they went. That's why they believed. And that's why they prayed and did all that she asked of them. So an eventful first two days. The first day spent the children running away. The second day going up the mountain mystically over all the brambles and the hard rocks and everything else and feeling compelled. And even beyond that, that there was that kneeling when they knelt. But it was something that they didn't do consciously. It's just something that happened. So our blessed mother, she's been appearing for over 40 years. And she says, Dear children, I am calling you for years through these messages that I am giving you. For years, I am calling you and exhorting you to a deep spiritual life. Read the messages I am giving you every day and transform them into life. That's the reason our blessed mother is called Gaspa by the villagers and by people now all over the world, because she's calling us to transform the messages of the gospel into life. And so when the gospel lives in each one of us, that's when peace happens. That's when the world is changed. That is when there is eternal hope and love. And all the things that God intends for us, when he made us all the wonderful plans that he has for us, they can all come to fruition. Because when you believe and you pray, the Immaculate Heart of Mary triumphs in us and in the world. I see we're at the bottom of the hour, so we're going to take a break. So, to Susan and Fatima there are secrets, and there are ten secrets here. To whomever she passed the last secret, she would stop appearing every day. Mariana was first given all the secrets, then Ivanka and Iakov. The seventh secret spoke of a punishment that was annulled due to the fulfillment of the Madonna's request by the faithful. To this day, Maria, Viska, Yvonne claim to speak to the Mother of God every day. And Maria is the one who passes on the message. The visionaries heard Mary repeat to them, Dear children, I am calling you for years through these messages that I am giving you. For years I am calling you and exhorting you to a deep spiritual life. That's exactly what the church does, right? Read the messages I am giving you every day and transform them into life. I'm repeating that because that is crucial, exactly what she says right there. If we do that, we will find a peace that surpasses all understanding, my friends. And there are nearly 400 such messages. And in them, Mary shows the way to peace. It's the way of uniting yourself with her through a zealous prayer life, severe fasting, and great sacrifice. That's exactly what needs to happen if we are to turn this world around and mitigate some of the chastisements that may be on their way. Mariana claims to have encountered Satan even, and how the Blessed Mother is showing her the reality. She says, that was a painful trial, she said, but it will not happen to you again. So, sometimes God reveals, the Blessed Mother reveals the ugliness of the supernatural world as well as the beauty. You have the great angels that help us, Saint Michael, our guardian angels, and then you have Satan, who also is an angel, but an angel of death. And so, there are many supernatural realities all around us. We have our guardian angel to help guide us. We have our Blessed Mother who is begging us to listen to her messages. And if we but read them once a day, along with some scripture, well, I think the world could be an entirely different place. I know that it could. Why? Because when people believe in God, and they unite themselves with Mary in prayer, then God hears them in a way that we could never do on our own. Returning to a fervent prayer for life is really what is the first step in the conversion of our hearts. And to open our hearts, right? This is John the Baptist, he dedicated his whole life to helping people to understand, to repent, and turn back. And that's why our Blessed Mother says, Dear children, you have forgotten that you are children of God. And so we have forgotten that we are children of God. And what a terrible thing to forget, right? Because if we really knew who we were, and whose we were, the world would be a different place. It would be the triumph of the Immaculate Heart. It would be the kingdom to come. And it would be eternal joy and lasting peace forever. It's up to us, my friends. Pray, pray, pray. Do whatever you can to help others to come to know and love the Lord, and to give them the graces of Advent season. Give them the peace that they're looking for, the hope, the joy, and the love.
