First of all, we should know how to greet each other, and what I'd like for you to do is I want to give you the greetings, and then you don't need to be – I would like for each one of you to pick one of the greetings and so that we will cover all of the greetings at the same time. Instead of just buenos noches and then everybody says buenos noches, I would like for, let's say, Mr. David to say buenos noches and somebody else say buenos dias. In other words, I'm going to give you the greetings, and then I want you to learn them so that the next time that we meet, which would be in March, that you'll pick whichever you want. And if it's the same one that somebody else is saying, that's fine. But I want us to learn the greetings. So let's start out with buenos dias, okay? Buenos dias means good morning. Buenos dias is good morning. So let's everybody just say buenos dias. Buenos dias. Okay, now here's something that I think is amazing to me, and I don't know if you can equate it. Like when they say buenos dias to me, I know it's B-U-E-N-O-S, buenos. And I don't speak Spanish all the time, but I know that buenos is B-U-E-N-O-S because I know the letters of the alphabet in Spanish. So then I can come back and say B-U-E-N-O-S in Spanish, B-U-E-N-O-S. And if you learn to equate them in English, you know, like dias, D-I-A-S, you know that the E is the I, right? D-I-A-S, dias, and you can come back and say it, D-I-A-S. Okay? So buenos tardes. I want somebody to take that one, buenas. Okay, now spell it. Do you remember the letters of the alphabet, buenas? B-U-E-N-A-S, and I'll say it in Spanish. B-U-E-N-A-S, now buenas. See, now you've learned the word. Now, it's really crazy. You think that you have to know the words. You don't. Once you learn that alphabet and you learn it good, any word that is before you, you will be able to pronounce. Now, there's going to be a couple of little glitches there because you're going to have to also know what syllable requires an accent, like buenas noches. Where did I put the accent, buenas? Did I put it on the first syllable or the second syllable? Second. Did I say buenas or did I say buenas? Buenas. Buenas. Okay, so where did I put this? Buenas. On the first one. Buenas. Yeah, there you go. So once you know that you have to have an accent there, you'll be able to put the accent there, and it will be, if you write it in Spanish, it will be buenos dias, que buenas tardes, buenas tardes. Everybody say buenas tardes. Buenas tardes. Buenas tardes. You can say it, you know, and emphasize it, buenos tardes, and then go ahead and say buenas tardes. Say buenas tardes so you can hear the letters that you're sounding. T-A-R-D-E-S, tardes. You see what I'm saying? Can you figure that out, buenas tardes? Buenas tardes. Okay, good. See, I want you to be able to say it without the accent, and so when you start out without the accent, that's fine. But, like, later on I want you to be able to say it, buenas tardes and not emphasize it, buenas tardes. Yo hablarme bonito, you see, and that's not English. Okay, but so when I ask you to do that, say it to yourself, buenas tardes, and then go ahead and say it, okay? It's tardes. Say tardes. Tardes. Tardes. Put the D there, tardes. In some cases you're just going to meet your, let's say you see a neighbor, and you say buen dia, good day, buen dia. Buen dia. Buen dia. Yeah. Go ahead and repeat it. We're singing buen dia, singing buen dia. Buen dia, exactly, okay. Hang on. And then now we're going to go ahead and learn the, not the greeting, but the departure type where it says, hang on. So you're just, you've got to remember that there's times when you have to be formal, like buenos dias de le dios. Buenos dias de le dios is a term that our grandparents used to use, meaning good days give you the Lord. You know, in other words, you're happy that you're alive, you know, so you should be praising the Lord for a good day. You know, buenos dias de le dios. That's a comment that our grandparents or the elderly used to use. But now, you know, everybody says buenos dias, and that's good enough. Buenos noches, good enough. Buenas tardes. Hola. Como estas? How are you? Go ahead and repeat the word como estas. Como estas. Como estas. Como estas. Como estas. Okay, now. Como estas? No, what is buenos tardes? Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Oh, good afternoon, okay. I didn't say retarded. I'm just teasing. Buenos tardes. No, the kids used to have fun with me because I would bring that stuff up, and this was. Buenos tardes, como estas? Buenos tardes, como estas? And then, see, I repeated what he said, but I said, buenos tardes, como estas? Now I'm asking him, how are you? So say it, buenos tardes, como estas? Buenas tardes, como estas? And my response would be, muy bien, gracias. I'm fine, thank you. Muy bien, gracias. Muy bien, gracias. Yeah, this girl is getting it. She's getting it. Good thing. And then, do you add y tu? Yes, you can say that's when you say y tu. That means, and you? Yo estoy bien. Y tu, bien, gracias. So you always return the. And a lot of times when somebody says, buenos dias, como estas, you could say buenos dias to yourself, and then you could say, bien, gracias. Thank you. Good morning. Gracias. And that means thank you very much. Okay, so what I would like for you guys to do is, Mr. Davis is recording this, and so what I want you to do is go back sometime, you know, you have some time, and learn those sayings, because I would like for you to come in the next time and say, you know, buenos dias, Mr. Bautista, or Senor Bautista, and so that I can, you know, respond to that. And somebody might say, buenas noches, Mr. Bautista. Okay. So it's buenos dias, buenas tardes, buenas noches. Those are the main three ones. Hola. Okay. And como estas. Okay. But that's, remember, that's familiar, being familiar with the other person. Hola. Mr. Bautista, could you repeat each of those and then give us the English translation behind each of those? If you will just remember like I was telling you, you can learn it by using the anglicized version, como estas, okay? C-O-M-O, como, como, estas, estas, E-S-T-A-S. But now you've got it in English, now just put it in Spanish. But you can't put it in Spanish if you don't know the letters of the alphabet. And this is one reason that my grandson failed, because he didn't know, even though he's Hispanic, he didn't know the alphabet. I asked him, I said, do you know the alphabet? He said, no, we never studied it. I said, how could you not have studied it? You know, that's the most principle thing that you have to learn, because if you don't know the alphabet, it's like in English, when I tell you the word construction, you already know C-O-N, right? Yes. You know that the word is C-O-N. Well, construcción is the same thing. C-O-N, C-O-N. Now, I'm going to just go a little bit over those emphases that I'm trying to give you, because it's really important. Stop and think about it. Construcción, construction, okay? If you hear the word construction, automatically you've learned the alphabet in English, so you know it's C-O-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N, boom, construction, okay? If you're a good speller, if you're not, well, you know, you may have trouble. But as long as you come close to it, you know, I always tell my students, you know, if I can understand what you're saying, then all you need to do is refresh yourself and learn the correct way of saying things. But construction, C-O-N, and construcción is the same thing, C-O-N, okay? Say it with me. C-O-N. C-O-N. Construcción. Now we're going to go with a true. Constru. Construcción. No, no. Constru. Remember the A sound is A. Bastón. Bastón. And what's important about the vowels is that, like I said, they don't change. The sound doesn't change. So you know that if it's an I, it's an E sound. If it's an O, it's O. And if it's an A, it's A. And so once you learn the sounds and you add those vowels in when you make words, then you're going to understand, you know, that you have. That's what I do. I check and see how many syllables do I have. Okay? Cartón. How many syllables are there? Cartón. Again, two. Okay, two. And how many vowels do you see there? Cartón. I see. Two. See, and once you get that good, you know it. It's E-e-o. E-e-o. Me-xi-co. Now where am I putting the emphasis? Me-xi-co. Me. The first syllable or the second syllable or the third syllable? Second. And Me-xi-co, it's going to require, because it's in the first syllable, it's going to require an accent. And we'll cover those later on because I don't want to confuse you too much because there are three places where you put it. In the last syllable, the first syllable, and if the accent is in the second syllable, you don't put one. But you still have, that's where the accent goes and you have to know that.
