According to a report, Canada has a significant issue with homelessness. There are a limited number of emergency shelters, transitional housing shelters, and shelters for women escaping violence. In the 2016 census, over 22,000 residents were enumerated in shelters, with the majority being people with no fixed address. About 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness annually. The capacity of the Canadian shelter system provides some indications that there is an issue of homelessness that requires critical measures to tackle before it gets out of hand. According to the Employment and Social Development Canada ESDC 2018, Shelter Capacity Report 2018, there are 392 emergency shelters with 15,859 beds, 338 transitional housing shelters with 7,645 beds, and 451 shelters for women escaping violence with 7,494 beds. Statistics Canada also collect limited data on the shelter system. In the 2016 census, 995 shelters with more than 22,000 residents were enumerated. At the time of the census, almost 7 in 10 of these residents were at shelter for people with no fixed address. One quarter, 5,365, were at shelter for women and children escaping abuse, and the remaining 1,320 were in other type of shelters. This means at least 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness every year.
