After Columbus's return, the rivalry between Castile and Portugal intensified. The Catholic Monarchs sought help from the Pope to determine the rights of possession in the newly discovered lands. This led to the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494, which divided the territory 360 leagues west of the Azores. Castile obtained rights to most of America, while Portugal gained rights to Africa and the South. This alliance allowed Castile and Portugal to challenge overseas empires and gain a prominent position in the global economy. El reparto del resto.
