Kim, who has been on the run from his father, is injured and found by Porsche and Shay. They take care of him and he becomes part of their family. Kim struggles with the fear of his family finding him and the loan sharks he owes money to. Eventually, he opens up to Porsche about his past. Porsche and Shay accept Kim's relationship, and they all live together happily. However, their peace is disrupted when Porsche brings home a watch that reveals Kim's father has found them. That's My Family by Lori Zero Summary Day 2 prompt for the Ken Torsh Week 2022 That's My Family plus Comfort One more for the Kiddosawit brothers, and this time, they're adopting a feral cat theropendicon. Notes This prompt reminded me of the Lilo & Stitch quote, This is my family. I found it all on my own. It's little and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good. Kim is 100% Stitch in this scenario. Laughing emoji. I'm not sure how much comfort there actually is in this, but I've learned not to fight the muses. I wrote this throughout the day during breaks at work and threw in some quick editing, once again, courtesy of Grammarly, once I got off. Sorry for any remaining mistakes. Kim grunts as the blow lands, but he pushes the pain away, taking advantage of the temporary opening to land a blow of his own. His opponent slumps unconscious and Kim tries to catch his breath as much as he can with what he is pretty sure are broken ribs while he takes in the situation. All the men who attacked him are down, dead or unconscious, he doesn't know, and he's not going to take the time to find out. He needs to get out before more of them show up. Gritting his teeth, Kim starts walking in the direction opposite of the one the men had come from. He stumbles every few steps, vision going in and out of focus, but he needs to get away, get to a safe space. Kim needs to get home. No, home is no longer something he has, not since he decided he wouldn't play father's games anymore and ran away a few months ago. Kim has somehow managed to stay under the radar so far. A combination of luck and his training, plied in a way Kim is sure father never intended for it to be used, but it looks like his luck might be running out. He needs to get to a shitty hole-in-the-wall apartment so he can lick his wounds in relative safety, but every movement is agony. He has no idea how far he is. He's not sure where he is anymore. Thoughts narrow down to taking the next step, and the next, and the next. He stumbles into a dark alley, hand coming up to grab at the wall and hold himself upright. His legs give out underneath him, knees hitting the pavement, and his vision goes dark. He's unconscious before his head hits the ground. Ah, shit, Porsche swears when he sees a pair of legs sticking out from behind the dumpster. Another drunkard too far into the bottle to make it home. Porsche himself had been heading home after a shift at Yolks. Hey, buddy, you can't sleep here, he calls out, heading for the body. He nudges at one foot with his own, and that's when he hears the ragged breathing coming from the prone form, lying on the ground. Leaning down, Porsche notices two things at the same time. One, there's blood pooling around the boy, and second, it is a boy. Not much older than Porsche's own little brother from the looks of him. Shit. What the hell happened to this kid? Fuck. There's no way Porsche can just leave the kid there to bleed out. With a sigh, he bends down to gather the kid up in his arms and take him to the nearest hospital. The kid moans as soon as Porsche starts moving him. No! The pain-filled voice is thready, almost inaudible. Easy, kid, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm taking you to a hospital. That seems to agitate the kid even more. No! No, they'll find me! That raises so many questions. Porsche wonders what he's unwittingly managed to get himself into. What sort of shady dealings this kid could be involved in. Then again, Porsche himself isn't exactly trying to draw attention these days. What with the loan sharks and the illegal fights, it's very much under the table until he turns 20 job at Yolks. He'd got in custody of Shay as soon as he turned 18, but the slightest misstep could mean losing his little brother. Well, let's hope the kid doesn't bite the dust on the way, Porsche thinks as he changes direction and heads home. And that we have enough first aid supplies. Kim comes to lying on a soft surface, light streaming into whatever room he's in. There's no beeping of machines and no smell of antiseptic, so he's unlikely to be in the hospital. His entire body hurts, and the blinding headache makes it hard to think. But there aren't many places he could be if not in a hospital. All he can hope for is that father will be forgiving enough to let him heal before punishing him. He fades away again. When he is next aware of anything, the first thing he knows is that there's someone else in the room with him. Whoever it is is humming while strumming basic chords on a slightly out-of-tune guitar. Curious, he opens one eye and immediately closes it back, groaning as the light stabs into it. The playing stops and Kim hears footsteps coming closer before the bed he is lying on dips and a shadow covers him. Kim chances opening his eyes again and comes face to face with a young boy leaning over him, a beaming smile on his face. You're awake! The voice is young and loud. The noise makes Kim's head drop and he groans again. Don't move! As if he could. I'll get here. And then the boy is gone. Kim lets darkness take him again, away from the pain. Over the next few days, Kim has more and more periods of lucidity. The pain is still present. The over-the-counter painkillers his saviors have access to are not doing much to dull the pain. But Kim is more than familiar enough with pain and he doesn't complain. He learns that the young boy's name is Porsche, call me Shay, and the older brother is Porsche. He learns that Porsche had found him bleeding in an alley and, when Kim had refused the hospital, had taken him home instead. Kim has no memory of Porsche finding him or talking to him. He learns that he has been unconscious for over a week, battling a fever. He learns that the two brothers are kind to a fault. Too kind, maybe. Kim certainly doesn't deserve so much kindness. He heals slowly. He has multiple wounds, caused by the knives the men who attacked him had been carrying. They are, for the most part, superficial. But a couple of them got infected and are the reason for his fever. He also has more than a few bruised ribs and at least one or two cracked ones. He's lucky none of them broke and punctured a lung or there is nothing Porsche and Shay could have done for him. Shay spends a lot of the time he's not at school in the guest room that has temporarily become Kim's. Kim teaches him how to tune his guitar, shows him new chords and how best to position his fingers to transition with ease from one to the other, drawing on everything his older brother had taught him about music. Shay's smile every time he gets a new one down is enough to light up all of Bangkok. It eases the pain of missing his brothers. Kim can't help smiling back. Kim feels more at peace than he has ever since Mom died. Porsche has gone a lot, juggling between a job and university classes. There doesn't seem to be any adult presence in the brothers' life and Kim wonders why. He learns why a few weeks in. He's started being able to get out of bed and to the bathroom and back by himself, ribs still aching fiercely. Kim has just got back to his room after such a trip when he hears a crash downstairs and Shay runs up and into the room, locking the door behind him. He's trembling, hands over his ears and when more crashing sounds echo from the room below, Shay is suddenly on the bed with Kim. He burrows into Kim's side and all Kim can do is wrap his arms around the shaking boy and hold him. The noise finally dies down and a short while later, Porsche comes knocking at the door. Shay? Shay, open the door. It's okay, they're gone. Shay untangles himself from Kim and goes to open the door on shaky legs. Hia, he says with tears in his eyes before falling into his brother's arms. That's the day Kim learns why Porsche has respected his refusal to go to a hospital. Time goes by and Kim heals. Somehow, the subject of when he'll be leaving never comes up and he allows himself to indulge in the fantasy that he can stay here forever. He finds himself participating in household chores, helping Shay with homework or Porsche with repairs around the house, taking a turn with cooking. Kim wishes he could do something about the loan sharks but he can't think of a way that wouldn't expose him to his father. He tries to ignore the ever-looming threat of his family learning where he is. If Kim can make it until he's 18, he'll have a lot more leeway. The kid fits so seamlessly into their little family that Porsche has a hard time remembering a time when he wasn't there. He knows that there are things Kim isn't telling them but the shadows in his eyes every time they even come close to the subject are enough to stop Porsche from pressing the issue. He hopes that one day the kid will feel comfortable enough to open up to them. The day Kim does tell Porsche who he is, shortly after his 18th birthday, Porsche almost wishes he'd stayed silent. Then he pushes the thought away and envelops Kim in a tight hug, whispering reassurances in his ear. The day Porsche comes home to find Kim and Shay cuddling on the couch, Shay half sitting in Kim's lap and exchanging soft kisses, he sighs. When they notice him, Kim looks guilty and Shay smiles wider than the Cheshire cat. Porsche rolls his eyes at them both and goes to make dinner. He does wish Shay had waited a little longer before sinking his claws into Kim, but he knows it's been a long time coming. The last time he'd seen two people fit the way those two do, Porsche had been looking at his parents. It's been over four years since the kid saw what's found him and more or less adopted him. Almost five since Kim grabbed a few of his belongings and ran as fast and as far as he could from his father. He's grown complacent, allowed himself to relax in his new life. When the blow comes, it comes from an unexpected direction. Porsche is late getting home one night, and when he does, the story he tells and the watch he carries make Kim's blood run cold. When Porsche goes into work the next day, Kim is right behind him. It's time to stop hiding. Much later, when Tankoon asks him why he would risk his freedom for the kid of Sawat's, all he can say is, that's my family. Read by Big Chan Daddy Lover, 26
