This is a radio program called "Believe Together" produced by Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford, near Bristol UK, for KTCRFM 105.8 and online. The hosts discuss the song "I Believe" and its significance in 1953, the year when one of the hosts, Peter, was born. They also mention that the number 70 has a significant meaning in the Bible and share some examples of its mentions in both the Old and New Testaments. They then move on to a quiz with questions related to the number 70 and play a lively song called "Jesus Put This Song into Our Hearts." They conclude the program with a reflection on the importance of roots and a song called "Roots by the River." The hosts mention another program called "The Lighter Show" that airs on Fridays and invite listeners to tune in. Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky then I know why I believe. Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky then I know why I believe. Hello everyone. Thank you so much for listening in to this next hour. It's good to be with you again. I'm Jenny and Peter's with me here. Now, why did we just play, I believe, a very famous song? Now, I heard it a lot. Oh, I don't know when, but anyway. The version I heard most, I think, was by The Bachelors. That was excellent. Well, we played this version by Frankie Lane because it was sung in 1953. And what other major events happened in 1953? Well, only Peter here was born. Fancy that. So, Peter is now 70 this week and Frankie Lane's I Believe not only became the biggest selling single of 1953 but also topped the chart for a record 18 non-consecutive weeks. It was written by Irving Drake and Irving Graham. How about that, Peter? It is quite amazing, isn't it? It's a beautiful song. Yes, it is indeed. I think The Bachelors' version might have been slightly better. But anyway, we got a bit about the number 70 this week and we've been looking up what does the number 70 mean. What happens in the Bible? Is it mentioned? Yes, it's there. 70 appears at least 60 times in the Bible. And it's considered to be a sacred number made up from multiplying two numbers. Seven, which represents perfection, and ten, representing God's law. Now, as a result, some theologians say the number 70 represents the universe. Well, the number 70 is first mentioned in Scripture in Genesis when we're told that Canaan was 70 years old when he became the father of Mahalalel. Several times in the Bible it's recorded that there were a total of 70 descendants of Jacob in Egypt. Then it is said that the Israelites sheltered under 70 palm trees when they reached the city of Elim. So that's just a few of the 60 or so times the number 70 is mentioned in the Bible. Some say that the number is used as a rough number to indicate a lot of years or people. Then all these mentions of the number 70 are almost all in the Old Testament. There is one number 70 mentioned in the New Testament in Acts when it says that the commander called two of his centurions and ordered them get ready a detachment of 200 soldiers, 70 horsemen and 200 spearmen. Well, OK, somewhere in the Bible it says something about life expectancy as being 3 score years and 10. So that's three 20s plus 10. That makes 70. Hmm, I think I'm there now. Indeed you are, Peter. And now it's time for this week's quiz. Over to you, Celia. As 70 is a theme in our program today, celebrating Peter's birthday, let's have a quiz with number 70 in the question or the answer. Question one. In 70 A.D., what happened in Jerusalem? Well, thank you, Celia. I think I know the answer to that one. We'll find out the right answers at the end of the show. But I seem to think it's what Jesus said was going to happen about Jerusalem. And people found it very hard to believe him. But then the historians tell us that, yes, it did happen in 70 A.D. Anyway. Yeah. Now, thinking about the Jews, we are especially thinking about them at the moment anyway, aren't we? Thinking about Jerusalem and the Jews, I thought we'd have a song with a sort of Jewish style. I'm sure a lot of you will know this song. It gets very lively. And it's Jesus put this song into our hearts. Here it's sung live at All Souls with Graham Kendrick. Come on, you folks on the floor. Don't let me down. This is a dancing song, or at least a little bit of a move. Here we go. Jesus put this song into our hearts. Here we go. Jesus put this song into our hearts. Jesus put this song into our hearts. It's a song of joy no one can take away. Jesus put this song into our hearts. Jesus told us how to live, how to live. Jesus told us how to work, how to work. Different places, different ways, he made it fun. Jesus told us how to live in harmony. Jesus told us how to be a family. Jesus told us how to be a family. Loving one another, loving again. Jesus told us how to be a family. Jesus turned my sorrows into blessings. Jesus burned my sorrows into blessings. Changed my sins, now they're my sins forevermore. Jesus turned my sorrows into blessings. Into blessings. So that was very lovely and lively, wasn't it? I wonder if you did get up and dance? And now, for the Thought for the Week for the Keynsham Talking Newspaper Hello, I'm Rachel Shaw from St Francis Church with a third of four reflections inspired by trees. I can remember the Great Hurricane of 1987 which devastated the south of England with winds of 110 miles an hour 18 people died and 15 million trees were brought down Tunbridge Wells Common, near where my parents lived was a scene of devastation ancient trees ripped out of the ground massive root systems exposed to the air leaving behind great ragged craters in the ground when we picture a tree we don't tend to think about what's below yet these roots had anchored, supported and fed the whole tree growing deeper and stronger as the branches reached higher and broader and just as the leaves and branches look for sunlight the roots search out water in the parched Kalahari Desert shepherd's trees continue to thrive with roots more than 70 metres or 230 feet deep this amazing depth was discovered accidentally by drillers of groundwater wells so what goes on beneath the soil is just as significant as what we see above ground it's the same with us the above ground tree is what people notice the branches, all our activities, roles and tasks family responsibilities, work, people we support the things we put our energies into but what about our roots? it's the roots that see us through hard times when we are buffeted by the storms of life are they in good shape? will they sustain us? what are the roots that nourish our soul that build up our energy, that give us stability and sustain our stillness and do we give them enough attention? sometimes it's good to take stock and look at our tree life as a whole is it balanced or top heavy? do some branches need to be pruned? do some roots need the chance to grow stronger? the prophet Jeremiah expresses this beautifully blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord his confidence is in him it will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream it doesn't fear when heat comes its leaves are always green it has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit so as we close, take a moment to imagine yourself as that tree with its roots going deep to the water draw up that living water and let your deepest thirst be quenched I am a tree with roots by the river of living water triumphs still may come but they end in victory and even in the wilderness when there's no hope at all I have roots by the river of the Lord when the scorching sun arrives my leaves won't wither and die I have roots by the river of the Lord I am a tree with roots by the river of living water triumphs still may come but they end in victory and even in the wilderness when there's no hope at all I have roots by the river of the Lord when the scorching sun arrives my leaves won't wither and die I have roots by the river of the Lord I am a tree with roots by the river of living water triumphs still may come but they end in victory and even in the wilderness when there's no hope at all I have roots by the river of the Lord when the scorching sun arrives my leaves won't wither and die I have roots by the river of the Lord when the scorching sun arrives my leaves won't wither and die I have roots by the river of the Lord when the scorching sun arrives my leaves won't wither and die I have roots by the river of the Lord Well, thank you again, Rachel, for those interesting thoughts and for choosing that song, Roots by the River This version was brought to us by the Bay Dock Young People That's a really lovely song, Rachel, thank you And now, over to Celia for the second question for the Just for Fun quiz Our second question A person who has lived for 70 years is called a what? Well, Celia, I expect you're wanting us to answer with quite a long word! We'll listen to it later. Maybe it's a bit of a tongue twister. thousands of answered prayers Here's another recent one which I've slightly abbreviated I am an occupational therapist I was working in a London hospital doing some very emotionally draining work It was a cheerful atmosphere though as everyone was trying to stay positive I had just done a goodbye call for a young chap and his family I felt absolutely broken and really emotional I prayed for God to give me strength The next moment a cleaner with literally the worst voice ever started cleaning areas past me and singing Waymaker I immediately felt so much better and just had this amazing boost of energy and felt so much love for everyone around me it made me just plough on for the rest of the week Well, after reading that what can we do but play Waymaker sung here by Sinek You are here Moving in our midst I worship you I worship you You are here Working in this place I worship you I worship you You are here Moving in our midst I worship you I worship you You are here Working in this place I worship you I worship you Waymaker, miracle worker Promise keeper, light in the darkness My God, that is who you are Waymaker, miracle worker Promise keeper, light in the darkness My God, that is who you are You are here Thoughts in every heart I worship you I worship you You are here Healing every heart I worship you I worship you You are here Turning lives around I worship you I worship you You are here Lending every heart I worship you I worship you Waymaker, miracle worker Promise keeper, light in the darkness That is who you are Waymaker, miracle worker Promise keeper, light in the darkness My God, that is who you are Your wife, the way, oh Jesus Your man, the broken heart You're the answer to it all Jesus Your wife, the way, oh Jesus Your man, the broken heart You're the answer to it all To it all, Jesus Waymaker, miracle worker Promise keeper, light in the darkness My God, that is who you are Thinking of trees again The other day I read something very interesting So I thought I'd say it here Somebody had been for a walk in the London rain Seven years ago But he ended up at his old cemetery And he says Whenever you hear stories of Victorian grave robbers This is probably the place This is the cemetery Charles Dickens wrote about it in A Tale of Two Cities In 1865 Over 30,000 bodies were dug up and moved To make room for a new train station A young and unknown at the time Thomas Hardy was hired to oversee this task Hardy planted an ash tree And arranged tombstones around it As a monument to the displaced dead Hardy would later become One of the titans of English literature And write such classics as Under the Greenwood Tree Far From the Madding Crowd The Mayor of Casterbridge Tess of the D'Urbervilles And Due to the Obscure Well I know I've read Tess of the D'Urbervilles I'm not sure if I've read the others But I loved that book I must say Anyway Based on this experience It is thought by many Thomas Hardy wrote a poem And it's called The Leveled Churchyard Because of course all the stones Were pulled up And they were all arranged around this tree An ash tree This is the poem The Leveled Churchyard O passenger Pray list and catch Our sighs and piteous groans Half stifled in this jumbled patch Of wrenched memorial stones We late lamented Resting here Are mixed to human jam And each to each exclaims in fear I know not which I am That's a very interesting poem I must say So there you are So that's called Thomas Hardy's Tree Of course some people doubt the authenticity of this story Except that it is a fact He was hired to move those memorial stones And there are lots of photos of these memorial stones And the tree So I'm sure Peter will put one up on Facebook for you Well sticking with the theme of trees again Rather perhaps in contrast to that Rather sad poem there by Hardy A couple of weeks ago Rachel asked us to play Trees of the Field By the Gaithers Which is a lively cheerful song So let's hear it again So you shall go out with joy And feel at home with me The mountains and the hills Will bring forth before you They'll be shouts of joy And all the trees of the field Will clap, will clap their hands And all the trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands While you go out with joy So you shall go out with joy And feel at home with me The mountains and the hills Will bring forth before you They'll be shouts of joy And all the trees of the field Will clap, will clap their hands And all the trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands While you go out with joy And all the trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands While you go out with joy And all the trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands While you go out with joy And all the trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands The trees of the field Will clap their hands While you go out with joy While you go out with joy And now, let's find out the answers Over to Celia And now for the answers to today's quiz In 70 AD, the Romans raided the city of Jerusalem
