Rousseau was not from a noble background. His father was a watchmaker and unfortunately, his mother died while giving birth. He learned to read at a young age and was exposed to religion. However, religion did not completely align with the Enlightenment philosophy of the time. Despite being Protestant, he converted to Catholicism. He co-wrote 400 articles in the encyclopedia with Guy Draud. He also had a famous dispute with Voltaire, which lasted until Voltaire's death. Rousseau developed the concept of the state of nature, the social contract, and wrote Confessions. Most importantly, he wrote Emile, a book on education. Rousseau n'était pas issu de la noblesse. Son père était un horloger et sa mère est malheureusement morte en couche. Ce dernier apprend très jeune à lire et est vite confronté à la religion. Or, nous savons que la religion n'était pas tout à fait en accord avec les pensées philosophiques du siècle des Lumières. Étant protestant, il se convertit pourtant au catholicisme. Ensuite, il rédigea avec Guy Draud 400 articles dans l'encyclopédie. Par après, il se disputa avec un autre philosophe bien connu, Voltaire, jusqu'à ce que ce dernier ne meure. Il créa aussi l'hypothèse de travail, celle de l'état nature, du contrat social, les confessions, et bien sûr, ce qui nous intéresse le plus, Emile de l'Education.
