The American Senator

"The American Senator" is a novel by Anthony Trollope that was written in 1875. The book depicts English rural life and has detailed fox hunting scenes. The character of Arabella Trefoil is a scathing but ultimately sympathetic portrayal of a woman who has abandoned her scruples in search of a husband. The eponymous Senator provides commentary on the irrational aspects of English life.
