The transcript is a radio show where the host, Annika Allen, plays jazz and oldies music. She introduces songs like "Que Sera, Sera" by Doris Day, "Slip Sliding Away" by Paul Simon, "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers, and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band. She also mentions that she will be playing many songs by Frank Sinatra in future episodes, and plays "For Once in My Life" by Frank Sinatra. She shares a personal story about seeing Paul Simon in a deli. baby lock the door and turn on sound brakes radio all right guys welcome back to sound brakes radio this is Annika Allen your favorite American girl and today is jazz it has been long awaited probably regretted at some point that you guys have stuck with me this long to finally make it to jazz oldies but goldies just all the hits that I associate with older people with my grandmother's radio with the really long jazz playlist that I have on my phone today is going to be great or golden I guess if we're going on steam so first up we have a song that I guarantee you probably have not heard of you probably have just heard the expression so this is the song quesara sera by Doris Day featuring Frank Duvall and his orchestra enjoy when I was just a little girl I asked my mother what will I be will I be pretty will I be rich here's what she said to me quesara sera whatever will be will be the future's not ours to see quesara sera what will be will be when I grew up and fell in love I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead will we have rainbows day after day here's what my sweetheart said quesara sera whatever will be will be the future's not ours to see quesara sera what will be will be now I have children of my own they ask their mother what will I be will I be handsome will I be rich I tell them tenderly quesara sera whatever will be will be the future's not ours to see quesara sera what will be will be quesara sera okay next up this song has a big personal connection to me this is flipside and away the demo version by Paul Simon now Paul Simon was in a duo Simon and Garfunkel and when I was younger we have this Jewish deli in my town called Sherman's that I frequent very much because as it happens to be I am Jewish and it's a very good deli I really recommend finding the deli in your area anyways one time my mom walked in with me and me and my brother were looking at the pastries and my mom looked like she had saw a ghost and we were like oh my goodness what's wrong and we sat down at a booth she was staring at the corner and she wouldn't let us turn around and she told us when we were leaving that she had saw Paul Simon and that it took her a second to realize it was him because of how short he was but that she knew that we wouldn't recognize him except for his singing so she didn't make a big deal out of it but I think it's so funny I think of that interaction every time I listen to his songs and that happens to be a lot because I love his songs and the original of this song is a little bit slower and sadder while this one is more upbeat so please enjoy I really really enjoy this one Slip sliding away, slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away I know a man, he came from my hometown He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown He said Dolores, I live in fear My love for you is overpowering, I'm afraid that I will disappear Slip sliding away, slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away I know a woman, became a wife These are the very words she uses to describe her life She said a good day ain't got no rain She said her bad days were a lie in bed and a plank of things that might have been Slip sliding away, slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away I know a father, he had a son He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he'd done He came a long way just to explain He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping then he turned around and headed home again Slip sliding away, slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away, slip sliding away God only knows, God makes His plans The information's unavailable to the mortal man We're working our jobs, collect our pay Believe we're gliding down the highway when in fact we're slip sliding away Slip sliding away, slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away Slip sliding away So the original idea for this song, this is called The Gambler. I was going to put the Johnny Cash version, because I thought that was the original version, honest to God. And then I realized that it is not, and I listened to the Kenny Rogers version, and I actually prefer it. You guys can look up both versions and tell me which one you like better, but for now, this is Kenny Rogers singing The Gambler. Enjoy. The Gambler On a warm summer's evening, on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with a gambler We were both too tired to sleep, so we took turns of staring Out the window at the darkness, the boredom overtook us, and he began to speak He said, son, I've made a life out of reading people's faces Knowing what the cards were by the way they held their eyes So if you don't mind my saying, I can see you're out of Asia For a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow Then he bombed a cigarette, and asked me for a light And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression He said, if you're gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right You got to know when to hold up, know when to fold up Know when to walk away, and know when to run You never count your money when you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough to count when the dealing's done Every gambler knows that the secret to surviving Is knowing what to throw away, knowing what to keep Cause every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep And when he finished speaking, he turned back toward the window Crushed out his cigarette, and faded off to sleep And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even But in his final words, I found an ace that I could keep You got to know when to hold up, know when to fold up Know when to walk away, and know when to run You never count your money when you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough to count when the dealing's done You got to know when to hold up, know when to fold up Know when to walk away, and know when to run You never count your money when you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough to count when the dealing's done You got to know when to hold up, know when to fold up Know when to walk away, and know when to run You never count your money when you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough to count when the dealing's done Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train Don't start my train, don't start my train Don't start my train, don't start my train Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train Till so much calorie came, and tore up the tracks again In the winter of sixty-five, we were hungry, just barely alive I made a dent in Richmond at Bell, it's a time I remember oh so well The night they drove old Dixie down, and the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down, and the people were singing They went la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la Back with my wife in Tennessee, was one day she called on me Virgil quit, come see, he's back on the poverty league I don't mind chopping wood, and I don't care if the money's no good You take what you need, and you leave the rest But they should never have taken the very best The night they drove old Dixie down, and the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down, and all the people were singing They went la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la Like my mother before me, I'm the worst of men It's like my brother before me, who took a rebel stance He was what they deemed, was proud and brave But his actions made him in his grave I swear by the blood below my feet You can't raise a king's lack of when he's in his grave The night they drove old Dixie down, and the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down, and all the people were singing They went la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la The night they drove old Dixie down, and all the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down, and the people were singing They went la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la Here's where it gets technical. I come from a place called Palm Springs, California, and it is old people vacation central. It used to be the party place to be for spring break, but unfortunately it is kind of, now that old Hollywood has left, a little bit of a vacation resort type of thing. And Frank Sinatra lived and died there, I believe, in Palm Springs. And so I just wanted to give you a fair warning. There is going to be so many Frank Sinatra songs on this podcast, and this is the first of many. So I really hope you like him from the get-go. If not, you're definitely going to like him by the end of this. This is For Once in My Life by Frank Sinatra. Enjoy his magical voice. For once in my life I have someone who needs me Someone I've needed so long For once unafraid I can go where life leads me And somehow I know I'll be strong For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of Long before I knew Someone warm like you Would make my dreams come true For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me Not like it's hurt me before For once I have something I know won't desert me And I'm not alone anymore For once I can say this is mine, you won't take it As long as I know I have love, I can make it For once in my life I have someone who needs me For once I can say this is mine, you can't take it As long as I know I have love, I can make it For once in my life I have someone Yeah, for once in my life I found someone For once in my life I've got someone who needs me He has to be featured in jazz. He's just... He's got that sound, basically, that jazz strives upon. So, I hope you guys like it. When you're all alone and blue No one to tell your troubles to Remember me, I'm the one who loves you When this world has turned you down And all the true friends can be found Remember me, I'm the one who loves you And through all kinds of weather You'll find I'll never change Through the sunshine and the shadows I'll always be the same We're together right and wrong Where you go I'll tag along Remember me, I'm the one who loves you And through all kinds of weather You'll find I'll never change Through the sunshine and the shadows I'll always be the same We're together right and wrong Where you go I'll tag along Remember me, I'm the one who loves you Remember me, I'm the one who loves you Remember me, I'm the one who loves you Remember me, I'm the one who loves you Okay, I found this song actually pretty recently. Um, it's by Julie Lenden, who I personally haven't listened to any of her songs other than this one, but I just really love how it sounds. It's very sensual and, like, smooth sounding, including the instrumental. So this is I'm in the Mood for Love by Julie Lenden. I hope you guys like it. I'm in the mood for love Simply because you're near me Honey, but when you're near me I'm in the mood for love Heaven is in your eyes Bright as the stars we're under Oh, is it any wonder I'm in the mood for love Why start to think of whether This little dream might fade We put our hearts together Now we are one I'm not afraid If there's a cloud above And it must rain Well, let it But for tonight Forget it I'm in the mood for love Marvin Gaye. What a man. I may be ignorant of Marvin Gaye's music, but I'm pretty sure he has a song called Get It On. Correct me if I am wrong, but I really love some of his songs for sure. This is How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You by Marvin Gaye. Enjoy. How sweet it is to be loved by you Yes, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Ooh, baby I need a shelter of someone's arms And there you are I need someone to understand my ups and downs And there you are With sweet love and devotion Keep me content with my emotions I wanna stop and thank you, baby I wanna stop and thank you, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Ooh, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Yes, it is Close my eyes at night And wonder what would I be without you in my life Everything was just a bore All the things I did, things I've done them before But you've brightened up all my day With a love so sweet in so many ways I wanna stop and thank you, baby I wanna stop and thank you, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Oh, yes, it is, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Yes, it is, baby Mmm You are better to me than I've been to myself For me there's you and nobody else Stop and thank you, baby I wanna stop and thank you, baby Oh How sweet it is to be loved by you Tell me, baby How sweet it is to be loved by you Well, it's like sugar to my soul How sweet it is to be loved by you Oh, yes, it is, baby Alright, we're getting into the jazz Just a little bit slower feel to it Once again, this is Frank Sinatra With the song London by Night I visited London this weekend And I can highly recommend Now that there's daylight savings time And the sun goes down at 4 p.m. That London by Night is very, very sparkly And very, very golden So I hope you guys can picture it in your head London by Night London by Night Is a wonderful sight There is magic abroad in the air I'm often told that the streets turn to gold When the moon shines on Circus and Square Deep in the dark that envelops the park There's romance in each cigarette's glow Down by the Thames Lights that sparkle like gems Seem to wink at each girl and her beau Up comes the moon when the city's asleep He's not alone for it seems Somewhere up there stands an angel To keep her watch while each Londoner dreams My love and I saw the sun leave the sky Then we kissed in the past fading light Most people say they love London by day But lovers love London by night Okay, now that we're getting closer to finals I can really relate to this song This is Dean Martin again With Every Minute, Every Hour Which for final season means full of schoolwork Enjoy Every Minute, Every Hour Every minute, every hour My love grows in every way Every minute, every hour That's the way it goes every day How I wish the days were longer Every minute one more thrill Every hour it grows stronger And it always will I live for tomorrow For I know what's in store I can be sure tomorrow Will be sweeter than before I'll do all within my power Just to keep the old flame new Every minute, every hour I'll spend loving you Every minute, every hour I'll spend loving you This one's a good pick This is Al Green with his song Let's Stay Together It's got such a fun little bounce to it And let's stay together and listen to it, huh? Don't wait too long Winter is coming, I've no time to waste Don't wait too long So while my heart's gay and foolish and free and still I can sing it's song Share every precious moment with me Don't you wait too long Don't you wait too long Don't wait too long Don't wait too long So while my heart's gay and foolish and free and still I can sing it's song Share every precious moment with me Don't wait too long Okay, I already told you my cool story about Simon and Garfunkel So, this is their song, Cecilia I'm pretty sure my mom wanted to name me Cecilia But her name ideas were pretty crazy She also wanted to name me Augustus Which I think is the ugliest name I've ever heard in my entire life I'm really sorry to all the Augustuses in the world I don't think that there are any female Augustuses Maybe like an Augusta She wanted to call me Gus I think that that's a very dirty old man name But also for the Gustus that I just offended, I apologize But thank goodness my name is not Augustus I don't know how I would feel about a Cecilia I'm sorry, that is It's not irrelevant because this is my podcast But you probably don't really care So, just enjoy the oldies but goldies, okay? What's the one in the war? The golden generation? The quiet generation The silent generation There we go I have literally all of these generations just yelling in my ear At my house that this song is the best And I give them credit for it instead of me So I hope you guys really like them I hope I converted you into a Frank Sinatra fan Maybe go Google how tall Paul Simon is Cause it shocked my mother apparently Next week we have Christmas music It is going to be officially December I can't believe it The school year is coming to an end I promise it is not Christmas music that you've heard 24-7 Or you're gonna go crazy I already know this It will be less common songs or songs that I like So basically my Christmas music jam playlist I'm making you guys a mixtape of love for Christmas That's your gift So instead of a question this week I'm gonna give you a gift of insight Any further advice that I have would be to Appreciate the things that you have If you're feeling crazy Take a moment and just drink some water And take a nap or something I've had a couple of those moments the last couple days And it's not very fun So yeah, just enjoy your day And don't let the seasonal stress and depression get to you Have a great, great, great week Bye-bye
