This podcast episode features a group of healthcare workers discussing the rewarding aspects of their day and how they show kindness and compassion in the healthcare setting. They also talk about the satisfaction of saving lives or making patients feel comfortable. The workers emphasize the importance of listening to patients and going above and beyond in their roles. They also discuss the challenges and intellectual stimulation of their jobs. Lastly, they mention the importance of self-care, such as getting enough sleep and decompressing after long shifts. Hello, this is your host Allie Hanson. Welcome or welcome back to the Overcome & Become podcast. Let's get motivated. Hello everyone, welcome or welcome back to Overcome & Become. This is an extremely exciting episode but this is your host Allie and I cannot wait for you guys to be here. As you can tell, it is definitely a lengthy one and I'm currently at a conference that we are doing a couple different podcast sessions and it is with the Page Banner Hospital so it's going to be a bunch of different healthcare workers. It's going to be absolutely incredible. We're going to hear a lot of amazing words and insight and I hope you all enjoy it. I also want to preface this episode by saying that I am at a conference so if you hear some background noise I sincerely apologize. My microphone picks up on literally everything but ultimately you're just going to be able to hear the voices that are around the table but if you hear background noise, that's what it is. Okay, I am here with our first group of people. This is going to be part one and really briefly I want to go around in a circle and have everyone share their names even if they do not feel inspired to share something on one of the questions. I just want to make sure everyone gets credit for being here so we'll start with you. Perfect. We have a wide variety of lots of different people and lots of different roles in the hospital but the question that I have for you guys today is what is a rewarding part of your day because as incredible as the medical field is, I feel like it comes with a lot of hard times. I feel like it comes with a lot of challenges. I feel like it comes with a lot of challenges. What is a rewarding part of your day because as incredible as the medical field is, I feel like it comes with a lot of hard times, a lot of down days so when you go home or even when you're at work, what is something that you really love doing? What's something that you really feel like is a reward to you? What is something that you really feel like is a reward to you? Or even at work maybe you see someone that you really like and you're like that just made my day. I love that. That's awesome that patients are your favorite because you probably see them all the time so it really does make your day quite a bit better. For me, I love my coworkers. I love seeing them every day and then I'm a new-ish mom. I love coming home with my baby and when I'm having a hard time at work, it's easier to talk to them. That's kind of my gift to being a mom. That's so exciting. That's so fun. Congratulations to you. Do you mind me asking about your coworkers? What really makes your day, what helps you kind of get through those hard work days or even if it is a good day, what makes it even better for them? I love all my coworkers but I have certain people that I know if I'm having a hard time, I can go to them and they can make me feel better. Some because they're sassy. Some because they're nice. Others that are just super compassionate. Absolutely. Thank you. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Okay. Moving on, how do you show kindness and compassion in the healthcare setting because I would say this is one of the most important parts. I've been in the medical field a lot with a lot of people that I know who are going through chemotherapy and I've had so many different people that have been there for me, whether that's nurses to child life specialists to really anyone, even Brian going out of his way to plan these big Christmas light things for me to do. I have felt a lot of care and compassion. What kind of inspires you to go above and beyond more than just giving people shots or taking vitals or maybe you work in the cafeteria and to make food for people? What really inspires you to be so much more than that? I think I used to work in the ED and some of those days are some of their hardest days that they come in. They might have a really awful illness. They might bring in their really sick baby. And I think as a nurse just trying to help those people make their worst day just a tiny bit better is something that I try to focus on. Thank you, Kelly. I think taking time to listen and respond to people if they need a little assistance. If they're worried about something, even if I spend five minutes with somebody or an hour with somebody, just taking that time to kind of be present with them. I actually love that you mentioned that because I think sometimes when we talk to people, especially if it's someone we don't know, we're already trying to plan our response in our head. You know, you just want to jump to like getting on with the conversation or moving to be like, okay, I already know what I'm going to say before they even finish what they're saying. So especially like when it comes to patients, settling down and really listening to them because oftentimes I think that's what they need. They just want someone that will listen to them. So thank you for sharing that. I'd have to say try to figure yourself some issues. You know, everyone's been sick at one point in their life and just having that confession and being friendly to them. That was awesome. Thank you, Mary. One of the things I really like the most about working with you is being able to research the questions that you're asking. Yeah, that's awesome. And I think that also really goes along with kind of this compassion thing because once again, you're not just kind of giving them a half answer. You're really trying to figure out what you're trying to say to them. And I think that's really helpful. All right. Now, how does it feel to save a life or if you're not like a doctor or a nurse, you might not be trained in that area, how does it feel to make someone feel comfortable in the hospital, whether that's a doctor or a nurse? Or if you're not like a doctor or a nurse, you might not be trained in that area, how does it feel to make someone feel comfortable in the hospital, whether that's a coworker, whether that is a patient, really anyone, whoever steps through those doors? How does it feel when you really get to experience that joy and happiness from other people? I think it's a big jump in how you are. You don't have to sit there and get all the IV stuff ready and put in all the cardiac medications and all that. What you have to do is just really look and know who they are and where you started. And then ask them, so, are you feeling okay? And eventually they'll say one thing or another, well, you'll look at them, whoa, somebody didn't have diagnosis, you've got googly eyes. Okay, I will figure this out. But, you know, this is an agent, just looking at them, looking at them right there, maybe an hour after they've been there, and looking at them again. It's going into the room and making sure there isn't anything missing. Absolutely. Can you repeat the question? Yeah, I was just talking about how it feels to make someone feel more comfortable in the hospital, co-worker or patient, or if you've ever saved a life, how it feels when you get the opportunity to do that. It feels really good, especially when I have to hold toddlers. Like there was this one time there was a toddler who was scared that he was going to get poked. So I just brought a toy from the cabinet of meds to the child. And it felt really good because you can't do that in a program. Yeah, and that, you guys have such great responses, but that once again just takes me back to the thought of, like, compassion and going above and beyond with so much more than what, like, the basis of your job is. By the way, Ryan's amazing. He's poked me quite a few times. When I go in there and get my labs done, I always joke, and I'm like, well, at least I'm keeping this place going. But what do you enjoy most about your job? Because I know you all have kind of different things, so what are some things that really stand out to you in your career? I really like my job because it's very intellectually challenging. Like, something goes down on the machine, and we have to, like, open the manual book and figure out what's going on. And at the same time, you know, we've got tests running, and especially from ED. So we have to, like, there's like a time schedule. Like, we have to be aware of things that are going on. That's sort of what I like about my job. And also just the gratification. Like, for example, like, this morning, actually, I brought a patient out to his truck, and he just stood up, just shook my hand, and said thank you. So I took a lot of gratification for building that. Yeah, thank you. And that takes me, once again, to something Melissa was talking about earlier, where words can mean a lot to people. Sometimes little compliments, like even saying thank you, we're like, oh, well, I don't know if I should say it because I don't know if it's really going to be that impactful to them. But really I think people want to feel that satisfaction from other people of knowing that they're appreciated and knowing what they have done has really impacted their lives and has been really important. And we all love a good challenge. We love to be intellectually challenged because it helps us grow and learn more as a person, but it also helps other people. Does anyone have anything else to say on that question? Okay. You work in the healthcare field. What are ways you stay healthy and take care of yourself? This is more of a personal question, and it's not so much patient-directed, but what are ways that you can really take care of yourself after you get home from work or maybe before work you wake up extra early and take that time to really take care of yourself? And this will be our last question. Yep, sleep. You've got to recover your body. Sleep's a good one. Especially when I pick up a shift in the ER, I need to go for a walk or something afterwards. Yeah. You've got to decompress in their long 12-hour shifts. It's a long time to be on your feet, for sure. I think talking about it, my husband works in the medical field as well, so he understands the stress of it, kind of the process of everything, and so just have him understand where we're coming from, how my day was, help me decompress and just kind of take it all in. Yeah, for sure. Thank you. Thank you. We got a lot of different responses from that, but we're going to finish this out. So thank you, everyone, for being here, and thank you for sharing your input on some questions. All right. We are here with group number two, so we're going to go ahead and get into this. We're going to go in a circle and say your name and then say what position that you have in the hospital. So we'll start with you. Julie Lindholm, general surgeon. I'm Steven. I'm with the Environmental Systems. Alexis, PAO. Byron, orthopedic. Jacob. I'm a mechanic. PJ. I'm a paramedic in New York. Very nice. All right. So let's start off with our very first question, and that is what is a rewarding part of your day? This can be when you're at work. This can be when you get home from work. This can be before work. What is a part of your day that really makes that day worth it? The end of a case when the patient is out the door and doing well. Yep. That's awesome. What is a good feeling when you're able to accomplish something? I think it's when it's time to go home. I feel that. I feel that for sure. I work at actually the clothing store that's just right next to where we are, and sometimes I'm like, okay, I'm ready to go home. I love that. And I think I love that the most because, I don't know, it kind of reminds me of like giving a present versus getting a present. Obviously it's exciting to get a present, but there's no better feeling than to see the smile on someone's face when you really do something genuine for them and when you really make them feel better or just make their life a little bit better, you know, have that special place in their heart. So I love that answer. I have a background in pediatric conditioning. The very first day of school we learned what the meaning of comfort is. The condition of comfort is bringing comfort. And so somebody comes into the hospital, they are in pain or they are scared or nervous, and they're in the hospital and it's right in front of them. And so they're like, okay, I'm going to be comfortable. I'm not worried. Absolutely. Thank you. That's awesome. I love that people have a lot of like challenging responses because we had a guy in our last session, and he was talking about how he loves a good intellectual challenge. That's one of his favorite parts of his job is he's always able to grow and improve and learn something new. So I love that because part of the mission of my podcast is to really become the best version of yourself. And the only way to do that is to try new things and figure out new things. So moving on to our next question, how do you show kindness and compassion in the healthcare setting? Because with as incredible as it is and all of the amazing work that is done, it can be really challenging and really hard at times. So how do you really go above and beyond to do more than what the basis of your job is? I think for the ER, it can be as simple as getting a warm blanket. To just sit there and listen to somebody. Basically they're having the worst day of their life. We do a lot of tasks like we talked about, you know, IVs, blood work, focusing in on the problem. But I think making them comfortable and just listening to what they have to say is a huge part, and that helps a ton. Thank you. I'm going to take being a liaison on the older patients. You don't know how to ask questions. My mother is one of them. Okay, doctor. Sure. I don't know what you said. I have to call with my mouth. And I have done that here a couple times. Okay, so this is common. So trying to go to the forum with their doctor and kind of translating what the doctor says into everyday terms, even though the doctor can do a great job speaking regular English, it's just hard. Yeah. I don't know. For sure, it can definitely be hard to understand. I know when I was very first diagnosed, obviously my mom's a nurse, so she understood everything. But my dad was so overwhelmed, and he just really struggled to understand things. And he kind of got frustrated at times, like, they're telling me all this stuff, and they're piling all this information on me, I have no idea what they're talking about. So going that extra milestone to really just slow it down and be like, okay, this is what's happening, this is what's wrong, I think that helps people more than we even realize a lot of the time. I like what PJ said. And from a surgeon's point of view, if the patient's not crashing, in which case you don't stop and think about being really nice, just communicating well and doing things orderly and fast. But if the patient, more often than not, the patient isn't crashing, and I try to just take a split second and see the scene from their perspective, and it helps you know if they need something basic like a phone charger, blanket, water, or what, you know, you've got a team to help. It doesn't mean I have to stop doing my job and derail to do that for half an hour. But if people are aware of what the patient needs, they usually want to do it. It's just a matter of asking. Yes, thank you. And Brian and I, we've had a couple meetings about this, but one question that he thought would be really good that I really thought about was what is one word that you could use to describe good health care? In one word, if you could pick it, what would it be? Communication. Absolutely. Compassion. Compassion. Of course. Yeah. We have like some C words going on. We've got communication, compassion. I think it's something that would be really easy for a lot of people to remember, and one of the things that kind of interests me about that is communication and compassion, I feel like it's not part of your basic training of, you know, whether you're in the ER and you put IVs in people, you take vitals, or, you know, whether you're a doctor and you're doing your research to really figure out what's wrong or whether you're in physical therapy and you're helping people with mobility and different things like that. It's not part of your basic training. That's all something that you really go above and beyond to do, and I would even dare say one of the most important parts for a lot of patients that come into the hospital. All right. If you could do one thing to brighten someone's day, what would it be? Again, this can be patients or it can be coworkers, really anyone, but how would you make them feel better and really improve their day? People love food, and it's very thoughtful, especially if someone's sick. I actually did a podcast episode. I don't know if you know or you might. Well, her husband Aaron Tate works in the ER, but Jodi Tate, and she was talking about how her mom always taught her to make food, and so when she got older, she was saying that one of the biggest ways to help someone out is just by making them dinner or taking a treat to their house. Like, that really means a lot to people, and especially if it's something that you really thought about, like maybe you brought in someone's favorite treat that is so genuine to someone instead of just being like, oh, I have to do this, you know, really bringing out the kindness of your heart. I like to just ask people how they're doing. You're not going to see this coming, but patients light up when you tell them they have privacy, and it matters in PAGE. Our HIPAA laws, you know, when they came out, I'm told, I remember when they came out, and it seemed so annoying, but it's made for a town like this, in a community like this, in a hospital like this, and patients actually need to hear it, and it's okay for any of us to say, by federal law, you have privacy here, and then you will see their eyes, they get a big grin. Thank you. That's one that I didn't think about, but I think you're absolutely right, because generally we find friends that have similar interests that we do, and that's why we love hanging out with them, and my dad was on a walk one day or something, and he met this guy, and the guy was actually asking him for money, but then they ended up going on like this really long walk, because they were just talking about things that they shared as a similar interest, so that's a great answer. Thank you. Okay. We're going to finish off with our last question, and that is you work in the healthcare field. Now what are some ways that you take care of yourself and that you stay healthy, aside from your whole career path, what are ways that you really show that kindness and compassion to yourself? Golf. Oh. Exercise. Love exercise. Painting. Painting. That's a good one. The shooting range. What did you say? I go to the shooting range. Are you guns or like archery? Guns. Okay. Oh, yes. Yes. I love the gym. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
