Over the past decade, 2 million people aged 65 or older have been hospitalized due to medication errors. Non-adherence to medication is a major factor, accounting for 33% to 69% of hospital admissions. A study involving 60 emergency departments found that out of 96,925 patients, 38% were hospitalized due to misuse of medication. This included both overuse and underuse. Older individuals were more likely to require hospitalization compared to younger populations. Next, I want to get into discussing emergency room visits due to medication error. So, over the last decade, 2 million individuals of the age of 65 or older have been hospitalized due to medication errors. Research indicates that 33% to 69% of medication-related hospital admissions in elderly populations are related to non-adherence. Additionally, representative and public health surveillance based on patient visits to 60 emergency departments in the United States participated in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System Cooperative Adverse Drug Events Surveillance Project from 2017 through 2019. Out of 96,925 patients involved, 38% of the participants were hospitalized due to misuse of their medication, whether this was overuse or underuse all resulted in hospitalization. Individuals over the age of 65 were more likely to have to stay hospitalized compared to younger populations, such as 45 years or younger.
