ChatGBT's impact on society is uncertain, as it is difficult to determine if it will be positive or negative. However, it is clear that education will undergo significant changes. Despite this, many people praise the achievements of artificial intelligence without considering its societal implications. Educators face the challenge of adapting to this new technology, shifting the focus towards critical thinking and creativity rather than memorization. While chatGBT offers efficiency, it limits agency and control over thoughts, providing single answers without the process of learning. Relying solely on chatGBT for knowledge would minimize our understanding of the world. At this stage, it is impossible to make a binary assessment of whether chatGBT is going to have an overall net positive or negative impact. In part, it is because good and bad are ill-defined. More centrally, chatGBT will have a sweeping effect that touches on many aspects of society. As such, education is going to shift entirely. Despite this, many people sing the praises of the amazing achievement marked by artificial intelligence without stopping to ask about its societal impact. From acing conventional assessments to challenging typical methods of grading, educators have a monumental task in evolving to the new technology. Ultimately, it begs multiple essential questions about the values of school and learning. There will have to be a massive shift in emphasis towards critical thinking and creativity instead of rote memorization and blind application of ideas. In the current world, students use chatGBT with abandon in a constant effort simply to be more efficient and get ahead. For schools to hold real value, deeper learning is going to have to take place. ChatGBT improves efficiency at the cost of agency and active control over thoughts. Questions are met with a single answer processed through a complete black box. Reading that response is not learning. Instead, acquiring knowledge requires a slow process of reckoning with different ideas and developing a model for the world. Do you really want to minimize your understanding of the world to the words of chatGBT?
