Teacher Rita faced indiscipline and demotivation in her classroom. Only five out of twelve students were present and engaged. She announced an upcoming test that would determine their grades for the term. When she asked the students to read and discuss a literary passage, one student criticized the lesson and disrespected the author. Teacher Rita expelled the student and felt frustrated by the lack of respect from her students. She worried about losing their respect and her purpose as a teacher. Indiscipline and demotivation. A day in Teacher Rita's shoes. It was 8.50am. Miss Rita had been in the classroom since 8.30, the scheduled start of the lesson. Out of the twelve regular students, only five were seated in their chairs. Another four were likely outside, waiting for a school staff member to force them into the classroom. Well, I can't wait any longer for your classmates. Before we begin, let me remind you that in the next lesson we will have an individual multiple choice test with no notes allowed. This will be the only assessment you will have this term, so your grade will be solely based on the result of this test. Now open your books to page 15. We will read the first paragraph aloud and then I will ask some questions about verb tenses and moods. Noticing that only two students had brought their materials, she instructed the other three to join them. Fernando, can you read the first paragraph? Fernando read with some difficulty and a lot of lack of motivation when one of the classmates started to grumble. This exercise is so boring. What's the point? There are so many interesting things we could do and we have to read something by some bloke who died 100 years ago. Some bloke? How dare you? You... I really think that we could be doing something more interesting. So, tell me what could be more interesting than reading Fernando Pessoa, one of the great writers of the 20th century. Well, for a start, I was born in the 21st century and I much prefer my rap lyrics. Rap lyrics? Ha ha ha! You really don't know what you're talking about. You haven't got a clue, miss. No one's into your lessons. They're pointless. I'm ready to nod off. Miss Rita couldn't believe such disrespect. How could a 17-year-old student question such a well-thought-out lesson plan that had shown positive results for over 20 years? And how could she compare Fernando Pessoa to something, in her view, of such inferior quality? It was absurd. Such disrespect led Miss Rita to expel Carla from the classroom, who left slamming the door, an action that later earned her a two-day suspension as an example to the other classmates. Miss Rita felt that she was losing the students as the years went by, but she remained resolute in her stance on the respect they owed her. If she lost the respect of her students, she could only think that she would have nothing left.
